Bike body mod
You can see in the upper right that part of the bike frame had to be cut away to make room for the engine itself. The engine still is leaning a little and I have touched it to my leg a couple of times while driving. OUCH!
This is one of the smallest engine kits available. 48cc. At this time, in Florida, you do not need to have insurance or a drivers license to drive one of these, but you must be at least 16 years old. This is subject to change. 6/02/2010

My biking time was the best ever (by me, not in the history of the world).
On every person's body, they write the age of the person on the back of their calf.
I was feeling good until the guy next to me (in red) cruised bast me. I looked at his leg and saw he was 47. Ouch.

#389 Heros of the Giro #2 Jos Van Emden
It is Long ago that Dutch bicycle made their heroic epos in the Giro. I think this year this will change with a new chapiter and one of the candidates to do so is Jos Van Emden (born 1985). Completely unknown, even in own country, he surprised yesterday with a 12th spot in the time trail. On TV he said, till halfways I did do it relaxed (!!!), cause I was warned not go mad on the crowd. A top ranking after a 50% relaxed run is top.Personally I gamble on a 22 year interval on Dutch heros. I will explain.
1966. Last climbing stage in the Tour de France. "sprinter" Jan Janssen in the yellow Yersey seems to turn into the first Dutch Tour winner. On that climb to Aosta Valley French rider Lucien Aimar made a demarrage. Janssen did not react and waited in the group. 150km with only a few others is a mad house according to him. And he miscalculated really. Janssen believed from Aosta to Torino there was a last climb where he could easily counter attack. There was no last climb and a hard wind in the back in favor of Aimar. A curous hit and run game turned the case. Aimar away with a group, coorporating. Janssen alsmost solo doing the work behind. He lost the tour on 1 minute and some seconds but stole the hearts of the Italians. He never did win the Giro but due to his clever and attacking style of ridng, he is only one of the few samples from a rider achieving a top status in Italy without being superactive there. In Italy Janssen is "bigger" as Joop Zoetemelk, Dutch can hardly imagine. Oh and Janssen did win his tour as he did win in almost every discipline of bicycle riding big prizes, a true allrounder.
22 years later. 5 june 1988. Coldness came over the Giro as the highest pass has to be climbed. Mount Gavia with 2600m. It was the third and most heavy week of the Giro. Riders really get tired and the classement will be made. It started snowing and the peleton turned nervous. Except one man, instead of dressing warm with a jacket he started to drive harder to get warm. It was extra ordinairy as non Sprinter Johan Van der Velde wears the purple yersey for best sprinter. That jersey normally belongs to non climbers. So Many people get confused as he left the group. It was not a game or to get warm, it turned into a serious attack on the leaders position also. In bare pre historic circumstances with snow and thick fog, the peleton has to react but no one would offer him self in this bare conditions. At the top Van der Velde was 2 minutes away and seems to win the stage easily. However He was frozen. He could not put on a jacket. Was wrestlng wit it for minutes. AS the peleton passed in a yacht on him -due to the thick fog no one noticed hiim. So something funny and tragic happend. A crazy yacht on some one already "stopped" with freezing problems. The story ends up some how lucky. Van der Velde managed to finish, Deserved his purple yersey at the end and more important become a hero. Mount Gavia is the highest possible peak in the Giro. Mr Gavia is Johan Van Der Velde. Each time the giro came here, his story will be told. In 2004 it was done in a TV documentary on Dutch TV from Wilfred de Jong
22 years later. 8 may 2010 the Giro starts in Amsterdam. Dutch riders did not impress in last years giro's. Hopefully they get inspired from the start at the home grounds and some one can join the gallery of hero's in bicycle mad Italy as third Dutch rider.....I gamble on Jos Van Emden.

Induction loops are currently used at almost all of the signals in Bellevue. The loop is nothing more than a wire buried about 2” in the roadway that is in a 6’ square or 6” round shape typically. The loop creates a magnetic field around this wire. When a vehicle, motorcycle or bicycle enters the loop, it provides a conductive path to alter the magnetic field. If the frequency change exceeds the threshold set by the sensitivity setting, the detector module will output a signal to the controller.
The location of the motorcycle or bicycle on the loop has a huge effect on the amount of change created.
There is a common misconception that an inductive loop requires a mass of metal or ferrous material for detection. Placing a single wire around the perimeter of the loop and shorting the ends together will quickly disprove this misconception. The single wire forming a shorted turn provides a current path for the magnetic field; thus causing a loading effect similar to that of a vehicle.
Your wheels each form this shorted turn, so when properly located they can have same or larger effect than a car covering the loop.
The best location is to have the bicycle directly over an edge of the loop.
In Bellevue, we have marked the top edge of the loop with a white “X”. If you line up your bike with your front tire approaching this “X” you should be directly over the wire. You often can see the loop outline from the sawcut sealer in the surface of the roadway.
For round loops the best detection is about ? inside the loop. This aligns your bike to create the biggest change in the magnetic field.
Some Loops shapes you may encounter and their “sweetspots” based on shape and how the loop is wound.
You can increase the amount of change, by laying your bike over at 45 degrees, and even more by laying it down on the loop. This shouldn’t be necessary in Bellevue, but may help in areas with older detection equipment.

It looks very good, professional, and contains more than I expected. There is enough here to repair a frame that is complete snapped in at least one place. My small squeaky crack should not be a problem. The result will not look good though.

Howard Hughes and his parents - RIP
Howard Robard Hughes, Jr. (September 24, 1905 – April 5, 1976) was an American aviator, engineer, industrialist, film producer, film director, philanthropist, and one of the wealthiest people in the world. He gained prominence from the late 1920s as a maverick film producer, making big-budget and often controversial films like Hell's Angels, Scarface and The Outlaw. Hughes was one of the most influential aviators in history: he set multiple world air-speed records, built the Hughes H-1 Racer and H-4 "Hercules" (better known to history as the "Spruce Goose") aircraft, and acquired and expanded Trans World Airlines. Hughes is also remembered for his eccentric behavior and reclusive lifestyle in later life, caused in part by a worsening obsessive–compulsive disorder. His legacy is maintained through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
Hughes' birthplace is recorded as either Humble or Houston, Texas. The date is also uncertain, though Hughes claimed his birthday was Christmas Eve. A 1941 affidavit birth certificate of Hughes signed by his aunt Annette Gano Lummis and Estelle Boughton Sharp states he was born on December 24, 1905, in Harris County, Texas. However, his baptismal record of October 7, 1906, in the parish register of St. John's Episcopal Church, in Keokuk, Iowa, has his birth listed as September 24, 1905, without reference to the place of birth.
His parents were Allene Stone Gano (a descendant of Owen Tudor, second husband of Catherine of Valois, Dowager Queen of England) and Howard R. Hughes, Sr., who patented the two-cone roller bit, which allowed rotary drilling for petroleum in previously inaccessible places. Howard R. Hughes, Sr. made the shrewd and lucrative decision to commercialize the invention, founding the Hughes Tool Company in 1909.
Showing great aptitude in engineering at an early age, Hughes built Houston's first radio transmitter when he was 11 years old. At 12, he was photographed in the local newspaper as being the first boy in Houston to have a "motorized" bicycle, which he had built himself from parts taken from his father's steam engine. He was an indifferent student with a liking for mathematics, flying, and things mechanical, taking his first flying lesson at 14 and later auditing math and aeronautical engineering courses at Caltech.
Allene Hughes died in March 1922 from complications of an ectopic pregnancy. In January 1924, Howard Hughes Sr. died of a heart attack. Their deaths apparently inspired Hughes to include the creation of a medical research laboratory in his will that he signed in 1925, at age 19. Because Howard Sr.'s will had not been updated since Allene's death, Hughes inherited 75 percent of the family fortune. On his 19th birthday, Hughes was declared an emancipated minor, enabling him to take full control of his legacy.
Hughes was an outstanding and enthusiastic golfer from a young age, often scoring near par figures, and held a handicap of three during his twenties. He played frequently with top players, including Gene Sarazen. Hughes rarely played competitively, and gradually gave up his interest in the sport.
Hughes dropped out of Rice University shortly after his father's death. On June 1, 1925, he married Ella Botts Rice (1904–1992), daughter of David Rice and Martha Lawson Botts of Houston, Texas. They moved to Los Angeles, where he hoped to make a name for himself making movies.

Note to the bicycle mechanic: This is the most complex bicycle to figure out how to service. Don't thing you can just take your tools to this highly engineered machine. This bike requires training, regardless if you are a master bicycle mechanic with decades of experience. Allsop Softride and Aero Wing Bikes for Parramatta Park Rides, The Yellow one is a very early version with lugged frame and lugs on the forks, the second black one is very nice to ride with 8sp x 2 and aluminum frame, very rigid, it is hard to describe how well it transmits power to the road. I have a Jim Bundy being prepared with full Campy ensemble probably 2nd gen "C" record, Should get a run in this weekend, The Park is the place but drivers are making it a bit of a nightmare, they just cut in front of you like your not there, they need to be watched closely by rangers due to their poor behavior, pedestrians using the cycle way are a nuisance also they just walk along like browns cows and abuse cyclists using their cycle way? hows that work, I tolerate women pushing prams as the walking track is not suitable but pedestrians should keep to their areas, anyone like to chime in?
Bikes For Humanity
Took this photo on the 6th March 2010 at the disused Goods Shed at Docklands, Melbourne. The women in the shot, Ylva, is a volunteer for the not-for-profit organisation "Bikes For Humanity". They collect used bikes and ship them to Namibia in a shipping container. The container is used as a workshop so that locals can fix the bikes and use them to travel the large distances in Namibia. I used a 24-70mm f/2.8L lens at 40mm ISO400 @1/6 sec.

Explanation:
I was street performing in North Beach, San Francisco, during one of the San Francisco Cruiser Rides, and this crowd of people walked by and started really reacting to the music. One of them said he had something to say a cappella, so I handed him the microphone and let him do his thing. He was really getting into it.
The bike is an Xtracycle Sport Utility Bicycle with a custom-built, 300-watt, 5-speaker music system called the Soul Cycle. It’s got all sorts of switches and knobs on the handlebars, including lighting, bass adjustment, and even a tiny 2 channel mixer so I can balance my vocals to the backing music. I rap mostly about bikes and public transportation. I try to keep it funny because the guilt trips don’t work. My mission is to get a bike rap song in the top 40, alongside all the songs about cars and guns and girls.
The Soul Cycle project inspired me to invent the Down Low Glow – the neon green ground effects lights seen in the picture. I’ve now sold them to folks all over the world through the Fossil Fool.com web site. People say they feel a lot safer at night due to the intense side visibility. Most people just buy it for the cool ‘pillow’ effect you get gliding on the neon light.
Thanks to Brooks for continuing to put out such a high quality and stylish product. I’m all about making my bike as styling as possible, not to intimidate or compete with others, but to amaze small children and convince my peers that cycling is sexy. Once we achieve that, I think you’ll find a lot more cities in the US that have strong bike cultures. It’s worth the effort.

HOW TO WORM A CAT IN AN IDEAL WORLD:
1. Hold cat's head firmly and open mouth.
2. Put pill at back of throat.
3. Hold mouth shut and massage throat until cat swallows pill.
HOW TO WORM A CAT IN THE REAL WORLD:
1. Cradle cat in hook of left arm, place right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently squeeze cheeks. Pop pill into mouth and let cat swallow.
2.Retrieve pill from behind tv and cat from behind sofa. Repeat step 1.
3. Retrieve cat from bedroom and discard sodden pill. Pop out new pill from fancy foil dispenser. Cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of throat with forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of 10.
4. Bathe bites with soothing unguent, rescue pill from under bookshelf and cat from under the wardrobe. Call man from garden. Kneel on floor , with cat between knees. Grip front and rear paws ignoring weird primaeval growling from cat. Get man to grip head firmly and force ruler into cat's mouth. Roll pill down ruler into mouth and massage cat's throat like pate de foie gras goose.
5.Tear cat from expensive curtain, get another pill and sweep shattered Spode and family heirloom figurines into wastepaper basket. Run scratched arm under cold tap.
6. Wrap cat in a large towel , head just visible. Ask man to lie on cat and put pill at end of drinking straw. Force cat's mouth open and blow pill down cat's throat.
7. Check label to see if harmful to humans. Gargle with Scotch to take away taste, while sponging worse of blood from carpet.
8. Call fire brigade to get cat down from top of poplar tree.
9. Tie cat's front and rear paws with twine, like suckling pig. Bind to table leg. Don heavy duty pruning gauntlets and bicycle helmet. Push pill into mouth followed but large piece of steak.
10. Open bottle of industrial strength vodka. Bathe wounds with half and drink the rest.

DAMN I'm sore today. Probably not as bad as Carlton. He went over the handle bars and flipped and wiped out pretty spectacularly. I'm just sunburned and sore. I'll stop whining. I'm just really proud of myself...I'm in better shape then I was back in February when I started working out, because there is no way I would have made it that far if I was not working out as much as I have been. Soon I will be able to go farther. Now I have goals...more defined goals then before. I'm really excited. It has taken me so long to get healthy...and now I am seeing results. Not weight loss...but a HUGE change in my abilities and in my mind set!!! I have given up on the scale...now it is just about the mental and emotional change.

No Fear
Fear.
It’s a dirty word that pollutes your mind and corrodes your heart. It sticks to the bottom of your soul and lingers long after panic sets in. This is one emotion you don’t want to face head on.
But you must. You must strike it at full force, no thinking, all action. Use every ounce of confidence and say to yourself, “I am better than this.” We do, after all, have love on our side. The love of our Heavenly Father, who has conquered everything attempting to invade our hearts. He is perfect, and by His Son we, too, are made in His image. And doesn’t perfect love cast out fear? Thought so.
But here, I’ll admit something. I’m a coward. I am trapped by this tyranny and scratching at the chains binding me. I have been fearful. A lot. And it’s been building throughout the last few weeks. I’ve taken great strides in admitting out loud that I’ve been scared of a certain situation, but the heavy heart and pulsing panic still remains. It’s one thing to say I’m struggling; it’s a completely different notion to trust God to help me conquer the issue. To take the one thing that paralyzes me with cold shock and place it into His hands and say, “Ok Lord, I give it to You; teach me how to handle this,” is daunting and feels unnatural, to hope in someone else coming to my rescue.
Yet I’ve found out this beautifully complicated breath of life is a process. Where we are not merely placed at point A to point B, but along the way we are formed. Refined, forged into who we are meant to be. And this means turning our trust and faith to Him who directs our steps.
I still have the feeling that God is doing something with this fear, far beyond anything I could imagine. I know that He is pulling me closer to Him when I pull away from what has been bogging me down. Something is brewing from this drop of doubt and pouring into a beautiful blend of belief. And when it finally takes form, I’ll look at the trail this tale has taken and see nothing but God’s beautiful fingerprints along the way.

Extra cargo space for even the smallest car or hybrid.
When I was shopping for small trailers I saw very light duty trailers (i.e. not durable) with tiny tires.
I saw expensive motorcycle or hot rod custom trailers for prices nearing $5000 which I'd never consider getting dirty or wet and were too small for camping or bike carrying duty.
Or I could buy another plain and open to the weather trailer. The typical American steel hardware store trailer as seen at Northern Tools or Tractor-Supply.
Then I found the Brenderup and it was everything I needed and wanted. Lightweight. Galvanized steel. It's an established brand so I can get accessories for it by mail or replacement bearings and tires locally.
In America Thule sold these trailers before moving on to the more traditional large American style trailers that are best suited to being towed by large vehicles. I have no need for that kind of vehicle or trailer b/c my projects/outings are small ones. When I need a big truck, I have one to borrow but I find that 99% of my needs are met with a Brenderup 1205S and a four cylinder CR-V. Your mileage may vary... LOL!

Welcome to my favorite class at the gym! It's a fantastic workout with a good instructor and motivating music-funk, hip-hop, rock, country and everything in between, and LOUD! :) DJ, the instructor rolled his eyes when I toted in my camera bag and tripod-I had to promise not to take his pic. Didn't get the best workout today as it was a challenge to get a decent shot in the dark room-so flash it was! I've decided it's time to really document my days and show you all what I'm about besides laying around in sunlit fields trying to look pretty!
Pedal Powered Amusement Park Swing
This "ride" was part of the pedal-powered midway at the Maker Faire in San Mateo, California. The swing was powered by folks on stationary bikes (woman on the right) while those in the swing seats held the fast-moving riders. All the while, the hipster disguised as carnie looked on, supervising.

No problem in elevator
This has got to be the one of shortest wheelbase tandems around. During building I thought this might be a major problem for stability, but it actually *helps*. We never really go that fast, and it helps greatly with balance at very low speeds, which *is* important for one of these.

The boom is not cut from existing bicycle but custom-built in canada. It has cable routers on both sides and threaded to take standard (not Italian) BB from Dahon. I might use double chainring one day but concerned about the added weight..... It's already quite heavy. I spray-painted it in the ivory car paint which is nearest to Dahon I could find. I might want to ask some recumbent manufacturers if they sell front boom in 1 1/2 inch tube separately....
Re-assembling my Bike Friday Sat-R-Day recumbent, which I'd purchased (and had shipped from the States) specifically for this trip. Now, I was supposed to be riding the Bridgestone mountain bike I'd received gratis from the manufacturer, but that bike was too small for me so we simply never made mention of the fact I'd left it behind in Kyushu.
