The Souls of Black Folk (An African American Heritage Book) William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was an African American civil rights activist, leader, Pan-Africanist, sociologist, educator, historian, writer, editor, poet, and scholar. The importance of his work to the success of the Civil Rights movement cannot be overestimated. "In the course of his long, turbulent career, W. E. B. Du Bois attempted virtually every possible solution to the problem of twentieth-century racism-scholarship, propaganda, integration, national self-determination, human rights, cultural and economic separatism, politics, international communism, expatriation, third world solidarity." -David Levering Lewis The Souls of Black Folk propelled Du Bois to the forefront of the Civil Rights movement when it was first published. This hard hitting masterpiece is part essays, part memoir, and part fiction. More than any other book it brought home just how racist and unjust America could be, and demanded that African Americans be granted access to education and equality. William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (1868-1963) is the greatest of African American intellectuals--a sociologist, historian, novelist, and activist whose astounding career spanned the nation's history from Reconstruction to the civil rights movement. Born in Massachusetts and educated at Fisk, Harvard, and the University of Berlin, Du Bois penned his epochal masterpiece, The Souls of Black Folk, in 1903. It remains his most studied and popular work; its insights into Negro life at the turn of the 20th century still ring true. With a dash of the Victorian and Enlightenment influences that peppered his impassioned yet formal prose, the book's largely autobiographical chapters take the reader through the momentous and moody maze of Afro-American life after the Emancipation Proclamation: from poverty, the neoslavery of the sharecropper, illiteracy, miseducation, and lynching, to the heights of humanity reached by the spiritual "sorrow songs" that birthed gospel and the blues. The most memorable passages are contained in "On Booker T. Washington and Others," where Du Bois criticizes his famous contemporary's rejection of higher education and accommodationist stance toward white racism: "Mr. Washington's programme practically accepts the alleged inferiority of the Negro races," he writes, further complaining that Washington's thinking "withdraws many of the high demands of Negroes as men and American citizens." The capstone of The Souls of Black Folk, though, is Du Bois' haunting, eloquent description of the concept of the black psyche's "double consciousness," which he described as "a peculiar sensation.... One ever feels this twoness--an American, a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder." Thanks to W.E.B. Du Bois' commitment and foresight--and the intellectual excellence expressed in this timeless literary gem--black Americans can today look in the mirror and rejoice in their beautiful black, brown, and beige reflections. --Eugene Holley Jr. (10) crazy few days here.... ugh, crazy few days here. started feeling sick on friday and still feel awful now. it's not serious. it's a sinus thing. i can feel it dripping into my throat and it has me so nauseous that i literally haven't been able to keep anything down in days. but, i refuse to go get antibiotics b/c they trigger my IBS. so, i'm just going to suffer and hope the sinus thing gets better on its own. it has before. and, then, on top of that, the damn hurricane hits on sunday.... we lost power at about 5am on sunday morning and didn't get it back till 2 pm today. everything in the fridge and freezer had to go. dog going nuts of course. just awful. annnnnnyway, hopefully things will get better from here on out. what is the exact OPPOSITE of awful is these AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING dresses that judy (googoojue) made for my saucy girls and ever so kindly gifted me for my birthday. i ADORE them! i wanted to take pix of them in these dresses AGES ago but the saucies don't travel well so i needed to wait till i was taking pix in the neighborhood! how awesome are these?!? American Black Bear at Yosemite NP Not a particularly good shot, but it is the only one I have of an American Black bear in the lower 48. States. As can be seen from this image, not all Black bears are black. This American Black bear (Ursus americanus), is a silvery brown color. It has several tags in it's ears and a radio collar. One of the tags states "Yosemite National Park", and another has the number "6". Yet another seems to have the number 2046, although it was difficult to read this tag.. With this in mind, I thought it might be a little "different" to show my readily available 3D glasses as a shadow with my own shadow holding them. Still, that wouldn't be much of a 3D image, so I decided to give the shadow of the glasses some depth. A subtle stereo image but I'm hoping it resonates a common link all 3D stereographers share. Dough: A Memoir Mort Zachter's childhood revolved around a small, struggling shop on Manhattan's Lower East Side that sold bread and pastries. His was a classic story—a close-knit, hard-working family struggling to make it in America. Only they were rich. Very rich. At age thirty-six, after struggling to work his way though night school, Zachter discovered that his bachelor uncles, who ran the shop, had amassed millions of dollars in stocks and bonds. As he starts to clean out their apartment, Zachter discovers clues to their hidden lives that raise more questions than they answer. And in the end, he comes to realize that although he may not understand his family—and maybe never will—forgiveness and acceptance are what matter most. (16) weighing and measuring my bread dough so i can remember, here is my it-works-for-me sourdough oatmeal bread recipe, based loosely on the recycled grains bread from ‘Wild Fermentation’: -- make a "sponge" (the bubbly starter for your bread) with 6 ounces (about a cup) of sourdough starter; 1 pound (3-4 cups) whole wheat flour, and 2 cups cooked oatmeal (or thick-cut oatmeal that's been soaked overnight). mix together and let sit, covered, in a bowl for 6-24 hours. -- stir in white flour and one tablespoon of sea salt. I use around 1 1/2 pounds of flour, usually, to get it until it's not quite sticky any more. -- knead on a floured surface until, when you poke it with a finger, it quickly regains its shape. -- let rise for 2-8 hours -- form into loaves and bake, starting at 425 for 15-25 minutes, and then reducing the temperature to 325-350 for about another hour, until bread sounds hollow when you tap it. -- I usually save out some of the risen dough (wrapped and refrigerated) for pizza dough. it works great. I soak about a cup and a half of oatmeal in hot milk (usually I bring milk to a simmer, then pour over oatmeal) for a few hours; then I mix with a cup and a half of starter (or thereabouts, probably a bit less), two cups of liquid and about two cups of whole wheat flour. I let this sit overnight or for several hours until it gets bubbly. then I add in salt (tablespoon or so), honey if I’m in the mood for it (1/4 to 1/2 cup), and sometimes cinnamon, and then I stir in more wheat flour until it becomes the right doughy consistency. then I knead for 5-10 minutes until it’s good and springy (I use the push-a-finger-in-and-when-the-dough-springs-back-it’s-good technique), let it rise for several more hours, proof and bake. Recipe can be found here Recipe courtesy of Rachael Ray. 1 refrigerated pizza dough, or one from your favorite pizza joint Cornmeal, for sprinkling on pizza pan Extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO), for drizzling 1/4 pound pancetta, chopped 1 cup ricotta cheese 1/4 cup grated Romano or Parmigiano Reggiano cheese 1 large clove garlic, grated Black pepper 2 large egg yolks, beaten 1-1/2 to 2 cups shredded provolone cheese A handful of flat-leaf parsley, chopped Preheat oven to 450°F. Roll out dough into a large, thin, round or rectangular shape. Scatter a little cornmeal on the pizza pan or baking sheet before placing rolled-out dough on it. Drizzle dough with EVOO and prick it with fork tines in a few places. Place in oven and partially bake for 7-8 minutes. Drizzle EVOO in a small skillet and heat over medium-high heat. Cook pancetta until crisp, 4-5 minutes. Transfer to a bowl and cool. Brush the baked pizza crust with some of the grease from the skillet you cooked the pancetta in for a little extra flavor. (I skipped that step; extra grease not necessary) Add beaten egg yolks, ricotta, Romano, grated garlic and black pepper to a bowl and stir to combine. Spread the ricotta cheese mixture out over the pizza crust, then top with provolone cheese. Scatter the reserved pancetta all over and bake 12 minutes or until crust is crisp and the cheese is evenly golden on top. Scatter parsley over cooked pizza, cut into wedges and serve. The actual retaining part of the shelf is made of very thin and flimsy plastic that broke easily (hence the duct tape). These retainers were then clipped into the door using a slot mechanism that can be easily jarred loose. Often will my mayo come flying out of the door when I open it. Perhaps I'm not an avid fridge-door-shelving enthusiast but why would you even need to make these retainers removable? For cleaning? I'd much rather reach behind a retainer to clean it than have it break into 5 pieces. Rubber band or girl's hair thingie The garden hose vacuum head was left over from when I had the kiddie pool. It used to have a cloth bag tied to the round part that would catch the sediment. The garden hose water pressure is redirected up through the small holes under Spidey's foot into the cloth bag. I closed off the part where the garden hose attaches with a freezer bag and rubber band, then trimmed it. One end of the flex hose fits just right in the round part. Dinner's on the pot One thing I love doing is cooking in the back country. I would rather carry a few extra pounds and eat good than go freeze dried. Dinner was italian chicken sausage (cooked the night before), arrabiata sauce, angel hair pasta with fresh parmesean and a 1/2 slice of bread.
