A small format film, with an image size of 24 x 36mm available in 12, 24 or 36 exposures. It is the most commonly used film size, but does not offer the quality of medium or large format, because this small negative must be enlarged quite a bit in the darkroom loosing it's clarity and sharpness.

35 mm film is the basic film gauge most commonly used for chemical still photography (see 135 film) and motion pictures, and remains relatively unchanged since its introduction in 1892 by William Dickson and Thomas Edison, using film stock supplied by George Eastman.

The standard film gauge for films intended to be shown in cinemas. Depending on the film stock being used, 35mm film is capable of producing an image of sufficient detail to fill even a large cinema screen.

Canon Sure Shot WP-1

The Canon WP-1 is a waterproof 35mm film camera.
There is some discrepancy (in Amazon.com reviews) as to whether this camera is actually waterproof or merely weatherproof. I don't know why this is, since Canon's literature states pretty clearly that it's waterproof. I even went a step further and talked to a Canon rep, who confirmed it.
At any rate, I took it swimming with me last weekend, and the inside was bone dry when I opened it up afterward. The picture quality is supposed to be excellent, although I haven't had my film developed yet. At the very least, it should be much better than those one-time-use waterproof cameras you get at the drug store, and you can get one almost as cheaply.

The WP-1 is nearly identical to the Sure Shot A-1, but I don't know what the difference is, other than the color of the grip.
Production of the WP-1 began in April of 1994. Technical specs can be found at Canon's website.

Briony Lynch

It was 3 years ago when Briony visited her piano teacher's house to find that her teacher's dog had just had a puppy. She fell in love instantly and now has a gorgeous border collie called Lucy.

Lucy and Briony swim together, walk together and spend as much time as they can together. So when I asked Briony who was her best friend and why - she could easily tell me that her best friend is Miss Lucy Lynch.

A look at the Mildura Base Hospital Special Care Nursery which was Eliza's home for 4-5 weeks. They only have room for 8 babies - but when a few of them start getting on incubators it starts to fill up fast. Often this is the reason babies get sent to Adelaide or Melbourne - just no room to look after them. For Eliza's first week or two there was only 2 or 3 others, which helped in the decision to keep her in Mildura. But in the end there was 8-9 babies - which probably led to her being let home a few weeks earlier than expected.

Shopkeeper (Michael): What do you mean, miss?
Praline: Oh, I'm sorry, I have a cold. I wish to make a complaint.

Praline: Look, I took the liberty of examiming that parrot, and I discovered that the only reason that it had been sitting on its perch in the first place was that it had been nailed there.
Shopkeeper: Well of course it was nailed there. Otherwise it would muscle up to those bars and VOOM!.
Praline: Look matey (picks up parrot) this parrot wouldn't voom if I put four thousand volts through it. It's bleeding demised.
Shopkeeper: It's not, it's pining.
Praline: It's not pining, it's passed on. This parrot is no more. It has ceased to be. It's expired and gone to meet its maker. This is a late parrot. It's a stiff. Bereft of life, it rests in peace. red light

Having Co , aka Flickr's "Smiling da Vinci" with us as a native of Holland proved very helpful when we walked in the "red light" district near out hotel as my natural curiousity might have tempted me to take shots of the canal front red light framed small rooms from which sex workersadvertise and ply their trade in the City.

There are no notices to warn tourists not to take photographs but Co advised against it and thus with the camera set at ISO 1600 I snatched this shot from the hip from across the canal just to be able to illustrate the thoughts that came to mind when I saw this urban phenominum.

In fact he and Joe saw one photogrpaher getting a lot of abuse and water thrown at them when they broke the taboo and shot one of the women in one of ther "cubicles"

While I found it a tad bizarre , this organised shop fronting of direct sexual services for those who wish to go that route , it brough to mind recent events in the UK.

The weekend I was covering a premier hockey game in Ipswich where the bodies of two murdered sex workers had been discovered and subsequently the naked bodies of three other women were also discovered in the distirct raising fears of a serial headbanger killer on the loose. and unprecidented police activity as the local force struggled with what for them wasan investigation for which they did not have sufficient resources to cover properly without support from addtional forces around the country.

These tragic murders have brought the issue of the safety of sex workers particulalry those who work on the streets to the fore again -in the media and in conversation.

The general view seems to be that sex workers in the UK do so , in the main, not out of choice, but from economic necessity and it appears that many women take this route to fund drug addiction. Not sure which comes first in this regard, the chicken or the egg.

Prostitution, and more particulalry , soliciting on the streets is illegal as is so called "curb crawling. "

Brothels are illegal here as is so called "living off "immoral " earnings. Working from the streets, with no premises is clearly extremely dangerous for sex workers in the UK where they could be driven anywhere by "clients."

Suggestions to create so called "tolerance zones " have been largely dismissed , I'd guess on the basis that , well , yes , great idea but "not near my home." Another suggestion muted recently was to allow two or three sex workers to ply their trade indoors in an approved room or house but that doesn't seem to be going anywhere either.

The solution in Amsterdam seems a sensible compromise and tries in some way to protect sex workers and also their clients it appears although I admit I don't know too much about how it is organised or monitored.

There is no national policy with regard to the sex trade here but there are some small projects which , for example , work with the girls to find alternative work and get treatment for their drug addiction where it is an issue.

The awful murders of those five women have horrified many and in fact the police have been very sensitive in terms of imploring us to remmber that the victims are people, with families and loved ones and that we should not forget this and too readily condemn or dismiss them as not worth our care because of their profession.

It was announced today that a second man had been arrested in connection with the murders of the five women. Whilst, should anyone be charged and convicted , this might allay fears once the serial killer, it is is one, is locked up, what will it then take for a sensible compromise policy be put together as a national strategy that ensured the safety and health of sex workers , rights that all other workers already enjoy in legislation?

IR camera girls

You can see one of the girls' bottles of Dasani, I think. Other images seem to support the idea that it's a bottle of Dasani, at least. Maybe I should talk about the camera. Their budget could only afford the lowest end model - about $10k US. One of the cost-driving factors is the lens. Glass is not very IR transparent, which is why the girl in the top-left here has green alien eyes - those are her glasses. Eyes are normally quite warm, appearing white in all the other girls. The material they use for IR lenses is germanium - not an especially expensive element, but apparently very difficult to shape into a lens.

Farewell for another year

A digital infrared image of the cherry blossoms in downtown Portland during what will probably be my final visit of them this year before they all fall off the trees.

I took out a friend's Canon 5D (an amazing camera that costs roughly ten times what I am willing/able to pay for it) and an infrared filter. Both combined marvelously to capture this image during a brief period when it was neither snowing or raining or hailing, it did all three on me during various parts of yesterday. What fun weather, and I mean that!

Thanks Blaise. As explained earlier that the photographs were taken from inside my living room which has brownish tinted glasses, the outcome was treated for WHITE BALANCE etc.

From the photographic point of view the pic has come dark and blurry.
That said, I really do not know the name of the bird ( but interested to know)and had not seen it in the past in Karachi.

It was very small one and as soon as I went out to get a still better picture, she just said goodbye to me.

At least I was successful to capture the close up just hardly 5 to 7 feet away from her and face to face.

Whatever the experts of photography may say about the standard of the pic, I like it. Note. I do not have Photoshop software as I tried it in the past and found it difficult for my taste. I have a very simple but effective Photo editing freeware software: "Photofiltre", developed by a great (at least in my opinion) French web master named Antonio Da Cruz. He has also produced “Photostudio”- a shareware.

Infrared Eagle Nebula (M16)

This majestic view taken by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope tells an untold story of life and death in the Eagle nebula, an industrious star-making factory located 7,000 light-years away in the Serpens constellation. The image shows the region's entire network of turbulent clouds and newborn stars in infrared light.

The color green denotes cooler towers and fields of dust, including the three famous space pillars, dubbed the "Pillars of Creation," which were photographed by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope in 1995.

But it is the color red that speaks of the drama taking place in this region. Red represents hotter dust thought to have been warmed by the explosion of a massive star about 8,000 to 9,000 years ago. Since light from the Eagle nebula takes 7,000 years to reach us, this "supernova" explosion would have appeared as an oddly bright star in our skies about 1,000 to 2,000 years ago.

According to astronomers' estimations, the explosion's blast wave would have spread outward and toppled the three pillars about 6,000 years ago (which means we wouldn't witness the destruction for another 1,000 years or so). The blast wave would have crumbled the mighty towers, exposing newborn stars that were buried inside, and triggering the birth of new ones.

The pillars of the Eagle nebula were originally sculpted by radiation and wind from about 20 or so massive stars hidden from view in the upper left portion of the image. The radiation and wind blew dust away, carving out a hollow cavity (center) and leaving only the densest nuggets of dust and gas (tops of pillars) flanked by columns of lighter dust that lie in shadow (base of pillars). This sculpting process led to the creation of a second generation of stars inside the pillars.

If a star did blow up in this region, it is probably located among the other massive stars in the upper left portion of the image. Its blast wave might have already caused a third generation of stars to spring from the wreckage of the busted pillars.

This image is a composite of infrared light detected by Spitzer's infrared array camera and multiband imaging photometer. Blue is 4.5-micron light; green is 8-micron light; and red is 24-micron light.

Roddy Frame was slightly ahead of his time. In 1983, when he wrote, arranged, and--with the help of his band, Aztec Camera--recorded High Land, Hard Rain, he was just 19 years old; and Britpop, the genre Aztec Camera in part inspired, wouldn't become popular for another decade. There is certainly more to High Land, Hard Rain than Britpop, however. Frame, a stellar acoustic guitar strummer, fills the 13 songs with jazz chords, and Aztec Camera's grooves foreshadow British jazz popsters the Style Council and Everything But the Girl. Whether making you dance ("Oblivious," "Queen's Tattoos") or reflect ("The Bugle Sounds Again," "We Could Send Letters"), Frame proves a master craftsman. Suddenly a ripple of excitement went through the pre-weddingcrowd, and there in front of them with a CNN camera crew was disgraced ex-Daily Mirror editor, former talent show panelist and world-class egotist and professional sycophant Piers Morgan - the great "superstar" signed up by CNN to replace Larry King on The Tonight Show. Morgan has found it difficult to find newspaper work in the UK following his insider-dealing scandal a few years ago which resulted in him almost losing his job and escaping jail by the skin of his teeth. It was his use of faked photographs during the Iraq war which finally got him sacked.

A hundred cameras clicked as he smirked and waved at the crowd behind the barriers. He wanted the crowd's cheering on his audio track, which he cued as needed by raising one arm. The crowd duly obliged. Piers even applauded himself at one point. Suddenly the filming stopped and the suddenly not-friendly Piers Morgan went into a huddle with his producer. Next thing we knew was several policemen physically pushing people away because Piers Morgan didn't want any scummy people actually in the background of his piece to camera - even though The Mall was packed with good-natured, very well behaved people all having gentle fun which they'd made great sacrifices for, thereby robbing him of his rightful place at the Centre of The Universe.

From Wikipedia: In 2000, he was the subject of an investigation after Suzy Jagger wrote a story in The Daily Telegraph revealing that he had bought ?20,000 worth of shares in the computer company Viglen soon before the Mirror's 'City Slickers' column tipped Viglen as a good buy.Morgan was found by the Press Complaints Commission to have breached the Code of Conduct on financial journalism, but somehow kept his job. The 'City Slickers' columnists, Anil Bhoyrul and James Hipwell, were both found to have committed further breaches of the Code, and were sacked before the inquiry. In 2004, further enquiry by the Department of Trade and Industry cleared Morgan from any charges. On 7 December 2005 Bhoyrul and Hipwell were convicted of conspiracy to breach the Financial Services Act. During the trial it emerged that Morgan had bought ?67,000 worth of Viglen shares, emptying his bank account and investing under his wife's name too.

In 2002, the Mirror attempted to move mid-market, claiming to eschew the more trivial stories of show-business and gossip. Morgan rehired John Pilger, who had been sacked during Robert Maxwell's ownership of the Mirror titles. Despite such changes, Morgan was unable to halt the paper's decline in circulation, a decline shared by its direct tabloid rivals The Sun and the Daily Star.

Morgan was fired from the Mirror on 14 May 2004 after authorising the newspaper's publication of photographs allegedly showing Iraqi prisoners being abused by British Army soldiers from the Queen's Lancashire Regiment. Within days the photographs were shown to be crude fakes. Under the headline "SORRY.. WE WERE HOAXED", the Mirror responded that it had fallen victim to a "calculated and malicious hoax" and apologised for the publication of the photographs.

...Just thought some of you might appreciate some background on this great, decent man who makes a career sitting in judgement of other people. Maybe this is why some of you experience the flesh on the back of your neck crawling every time you see his smirking face on TV. Mine certainly does. I'm not a fan. Could you tell?

On the train (Dehradun Shatabi) from Delhi to Dehradun I was really bored. I finished a book, an entire Time magazine, hung out the side of the train. This was a self-portrait shot in the mirror of the sink on our car.

I'll use this space to express my disappointment in the trip.

I was so excited to get to the Nikon "DSLR Zone" in Connaught Place in Delhi (Dass Studios) to get my lens, filters, and sensor cleaned. I've grown tired of trying with no luck to clean them myself and I have dozens of spots that I have to painfully remove from most my images (anything with a sky).

I get there and first the men manning the Nikon booth acted like they had never touched a camera in their life! I didn't care that they didn't speak English, but it unnerved me that they didn't seem to have a clue about the products they were selling. Finally they brought over another guy who could communicate in my language (I haven't been a good practicer of Hindi...) and I explained to him my problem with the spots and desire for them to professionally clean my camera. He simply looked through the viewfinder up at the ceiling and glanced at my lens and declared, "It doesn't seem very dirty at all, it's fine."

What.

After I repeated that his looks deceive him he finally shared that they had no resources to clean the camera on location, it would have to be sent somewhere else.

What.

I'm so dissapointed in that store and Nikon themselves for heralding the place on their website. I don't want to leave it to the tiring adage: "Oh, it's just India." But I could walk into any Nikon dealer in the States and have my equipment cleaned in no time on site.

I was even more unnerved when I asked him about cleaning it myself.

He showed me his idea of "the best way." He breathed on the lens and wiped it with a chammois. When I pressed further he explained they don't have any camera cleaning kits in stock either.

Determined to get some use of the store I asked them about a new lens hood. Mine gets in the way with my 18mm and I was hoping for one that would allow me to shoot with the hood on all the time.

They looked at me with puzzled faces. I pulled out my lens hood to explain, still hopeful they would have one.

Nope.

So I was completely shot down and my excitement to finally have my camera cleaned dashed.

What's even more annoying is that I wandered through Palika Bazaar, a huge underground (both literally and metaphorically) market beneath Connaught Place and found a camera dealer who carried on with me in fantastic camera talk. He even knew that the green thing on the top of my camera is a level! I bought a cleaning kit AND lens hood from him. He even showed me a good selection of lenses to consider upgrading to (that are compatible with the D40).

Any Delhians know of a place that offers reliable profesiional camera cleaning in town? I'll be back there in two weeks.

Thanks for listening. Hope my Indian friends take no offense, the events just discouraged me.

Nexus S from Google is part of research that will equip small, free-flying satellites called Synchronized Position Hold, Engage, Reorient, Experimental Satellites (SPHERES) used by the astronauts to provide a broader range of capabilities and give better communication between land and sky. Nexus S is the first commercial smartphone certified by NASA to fly on the space shuttle and to be cleared for use on the International Space Station. The experiment will use the smartphone-enhanced SPHERES as remotely operated robots to conduct interior survey and inspections of the station, to capture mobile camera images and video, and to study how robots can support future human exploration.

The addition of Nexus S to the SPHERES will add to the capabilities of each individual satellite while further increasing NASA’s understanding and exploration of space. Lead engineer in the Intelligent Robotics Group at NASA’s Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif., DW Wheeler, explains, "By connecting a smartphone, we can immediately make SPHERES more intelligent. August, 28th 2008. Here's what I thought to be a Korean film crew, complete with director sitting on a fold-out chair in sunglasses, right in front of the Gare do Oriente (Oriente Train Station) in Lisbon, Portugal, and coincidentally in front of the shopping mall Vasco da Gama, a huge place with thousands of people going in and out every day.

Apparently they were shooting a commercial for a SM3 car (Renault Samsung) there, the car had this small black crane with a sophisticate camera on the end, and they were moving the car about and shooting away. some people were watching this, others were just minding their own business and so was I, until I decided to snap a cameraphone pic with my Sony Ericsson K550i.

Before I took the picture, a black girl was using her video camera to record the very beautiful area of the Oriente station, and the girl from the film crew went up to her and despite my ignorance of what was said, the Police officer was also involved and I saw the girl being requested to show to the officer what she had been shooting (the buildings and the gardens around the station). I thought this to be extremely unfair and an abuse of authority, not really from the Police officer's part but from the whole crew making the commercial. Being allowed to do that should not mean that they have any right to prevent anyone in a turistic area to film video or shoot photos.

When I took a photo, I mmediately I got a shout from a woman in sunglasses talking to me in Portuguese, and a Police officer was standing around next to her.
She immediately complained that I could not take pictures, to which I motioned with my arms to mean I was in the public sidewalk, in a VERY public place. Then the Police officer turned around and told me I was not allowed to take photos of this, despite the hundreds of people passing by.

On the second photo you can see the woman looking at me, shortly before the policeman shouted out that I could not take any pictures. I replied, that I was in a public sidewalk and that I had every right to take any photos, to which the woman actually conceded that she knew that, "but still..." Hillarious.

I shot their photo and then relocated to shoot the third photo. I had heard mention of this sort of abusive suspension of the right to take photos in a public place, but it was the first time I actually experienced a situation like this myself, in Portugal. Here are the photos.

Author Tip: Using Leading Lines
One of the easiest ways to make your images more dynamic and interesting is by using leading lines. Leading lines draw the viewer’s eye through the scene, generate dramatic tension by creating or dividing negative space, lead the eye to the subject, or they can do any combination of these.
Leading lines exist everywhere, both in nature and in man-made structures. Oftentimes when composing a photograph we unwittingly include leading lines because in real life, just as in a photograph, our eyes tend to be drawn to leading lines.
The key is to recognize leading lines so you can use them more effectively in your photographs. Some leading line subjects are obvious, a path or trail leading off into the distance, railroad tracks, handrails or stairways. Some leading lines are less obvious, the curving shore line of a beach or the gentle sloping curve of a hill or mountain leading off into the distance.
Keep an eye out for leading lines and incorporate them into your images when you can. Keep in mind that the leading line doesn’t always have to be the key subject, sometimes the subtle use of a leading line is best.

What are three young lives worth?

Some would have you believe, in the big scheme of things, the three lives here are not worth much of anything – that they are just simply three powerless and native, young lives caught up in a world where wealth and corrupt politics rule the world.

Something happened out here a few days ago that totally defeated my moral. I personally believe it borders on workplace discrimination and those who were "forced" to enforce it, well, should be ashamed of themselves for not standing up for what is right like true leaders would.

Three young lives are worth more than my life and greedy thoughts of where my next paycheck will come when I have a plethora of opportunities everywhere I turn - but instead choose to greedily leech, steadfastly on my current circumstance too ignorantly and cowardly to do what is right.

Strange creature...

This thing freaked me out! I was standing on the pier luar fishing when I got snagged on something. Well, it turned out this thing hit the luar.

When I pulled it out of the water I thought it was a lobster. When it hit the ground I didn't have any idea what it was. a few of the Marshallese knew though. They told me it was a big shrimp, Marshall Islands style and is good to eat. This thing was as long as my arm from my fingers to the elbow. I threw it back into the ocean. It then swam around the bottom for a while as if it were looking for something.

Polaroid 340 - Test 1

Polaroid 340 with Fuji FP3000B film - no dial adjustment. Well, it starts out in a thrift shop where I naturally gravitate to the camera shelf. Among the discarded orphans . . . this camera where after a nice struggle, I finally figured out how to open the clam-shell cover just for a quick inspection. The manual and cold-clip were inside. The price - $3.00US. After pondering intensely for about 3 micro-seconds, I bought it. Then started reading up about how pack film actually works. Did the battery mod so it would use 3AAA's instead of a 4.5V oddball. Tested and seemed to work. Decided on this film for versatility and not keen on Fuji's super saturated colors.

This is the first shot taken on a windy day. First problem . . . I pull the white tab and did not know what was supposed to happen. Kept pulling and finally the side door opened and a black tab came out. Pulled that out and along came the sheet along with some goop (because I manhandled this first frame) and then the wind took over. Nothing like getting fingers covered with goop, trying to separate the print from the backing, and fighting the wind. But . . . pretty happy with the results.

It's raining today so I was forced to do a inside shoot. I decided to do a floating one cause that was my back up plan in case I couldn't go outside. I got the idea for it after seeing a commercial for that new movie The Fourth Kind. My sister want's to go see it, but I dunno, it doesn't look that good to me for some reason. I mean they make the alien seem like the bogey man.

I have to go to work in like an hour. I need money real bad. I went shopping yesterday and I spent way more then I was suppose to. My large format camera fund has taken a bit of a set back, it needs to be replenished. So off to work I must go. Straight into the jaws of the baby eater a.k.a my boss. All tho for some reason she has been really nice to me lately. I dunno, seems very fishy to me.

Halloween is next week, WOO HOO! Can't wait, it's gonna be great! :D I need to buy mini Polaroid film! :O O shit, where am I gonna get all this money? That's it, I'm selling a kidney!
