30th Wedding Anniversary Cake

30th Wedding Anniversary Cake

2 tier lilly and pearl themed cake. I took inspiration from Lindy Smith's book 'Cakes to inspire and desire', although it's not a direct copy of the 'art nouveau lilies' cake in the book. I decided to tinker with the design and add my own flare! I'm especially delighted with the lillies around the base and on top and the pearl garland around the base of the top tier as it's the first time i've ever attepted making them. The bottom tier is lemon madeira cake filled with white lemon butter cream. The top tier is chocolate buttercream filled chocolate cake. Both tiers are covered in white sugarpaste (fondant), the cream detailing is modeling paste, and the lillies are made from flower/petal paste (gumpaste). The garland is made with jewelry wire and plastic fashion pearls. The top tier is also covered in edible pearls.

The reason the tree is called cannonball is after flowering, large brown fruit balls are formed in the size and shape of cannonballs. The "fruit" inside the ball is said to have an unpleasant odor.

The flower of the Cannonball Tree has a waxy texture & is heavenly scented - a cross between a fine expensive perfume and a wonderful flower scent. The flowers are formed off unusual thick woody extensions that grow from the main brown scaly trunk bark of the tree and cascade down in large numbers

--- wonderful!
--- +++ --- +++ --- +++ --- +++ --- +++ --- +++ --- +++ --- +++ --- +++ --- +++ --- +++
Tibouchina semidecandra or more commonly, Princess flower, Princess-Flower or Glory Bush and also Lasiandra is a sprawling, evergreen shrub or small ornamental tree native to Brazil and ranges from 10 to 15 feet (20 feet with proper training) in height. It can be trimmed to any size and still put on a vivid, year-long flower display. The dark green, velvety, four to six-inch-long leaves have several prominent longitudinal veins instead of the usual one, and are often edged in red. Large, royal purple blossoms, flaring open to five inches, are held on terminal panicles above the foliage, creating a spectacular sight when in full bloom. Some flowers are open throughout the year but they are especially plentiful from May to January. Princess-Flower is ideal for the mixed shrubbery border or used in small groupings to compound the impact of bloom-time.

Get Well Wishes for Rosalie

Get Well Wishes for Rosalie

Update as of January 22, 2006: After a CAT scan, ordered by Rosalie's cancer doctor, the family learned that she has blood clots in one lung and one leg. Medicine to prevent future blood clots has been given along with "breathing treatments." The blood clots should dissolve. Another medicine to thin her blood has also been ordered by her doctor. Her oxygen count today was 95%, and she was breathing through her nose with help from the oxygen supply. Her breathing was much better, and she was able to sleep without the use of a mask since she was NOT using her mouth to breathe--ONLY her nose.

Thanks to everyone for your prayers and hospital visits.

The flowers are from her family members. Her son, Wayne, used a hospital glove to brighten up the room with some help from his brother's hat. Rosa was not too amused. :)

Corpse Flower temperature monitoring

Corpse Flower temperature monitoring

2 stages of corpse flower life cycle: the bloom is the reproductive stage. It smells like death. Note the gas mask sitting at the guy's feet. He's attaching temperature sensors, because the plant heats itself to further spread and activate its odor. The pod at the bottom left of the bloom is the dormant stage. It can blossom into either the light-gathering stage or the reproductive bloom, depending on how much energy it has stored. The brown thing at the left of the base of the plant is another plant in the dormant stage of its life cycle.

Corpse Flower

Corpse Flower

We went, along with a great many other people, to check out the notorious "corpse flower" (Amorphophallus titanum) at the Conservatory of Flowers. This is reputed to be both the largest and smelliest bloom in flowerdom. By the time we go there, less than 24 hours after it finally opened (which it does only once every two years), the smell wasn't really that bad -- kind of like a really expensive French cheese. Or maybe that was from the crowd of spectators.

Bougainvillea

Bougainvillea

Growing near the restaurant by the entrance to the Coba Mayan ruins ...

From Wikipedia -
Bougainvillea is a genus of flowering plants in the family Nyctaginaceae. They are native to South America from Brazil west to Peru and south to southern Argentina (Chubut Province).

Different authors accept between four and 18 species in the genus. The plant was classified by Europeans in Brazil in 1768, by Philibert Commercon, a French botanist accompanying French Navy admiral and explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville during his voyage of circumnavigation.

They are thorny, woody vines growing anywhere from 1-12 meters tall, scrambling over other plants with their hooked thorns. The thorns are tipped with a black, waxy substance. They are evergreen where rainfall occurs all year, or deciduous if there is a dry season. The leaves are alternate, simple ovate-acuminate, 4-13 cm long and 2-6 cm broad. The actual flower of the plant is small and generally white, but each cluster of three flowers is surrounded by three or six bracts with the bright colors associated with the plant, including pink, magenta, purple, red, orange, white, or yellow. Bougainvillea glabra is sometimes referred to as "paper flower" because the bracts are thin and papery. The fruit is a narrow five-lobed achene.

Bougainvillea are relatively pest-free plants, but may suffer from worms, snails and aphids. The larvae of some Lepidoptera species also use them as food plants, for example the Giant Leopard Moth.

Bougainvilleas are popular ornamental plants in most areas with warm climates, including Ethiopia, Indonesia, Aruba, the Philippines, Thailand, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Singapore, the Mediterranean region, the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico, South Africa, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and the United States in Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, South Carolina, and southern Texas. Locarno in Switzerland, with its mild Mediterranean climate, is famous for its bougainvilleas.

Although it is frost-sensitive and hardy in U.S. Hardiness Zones 9b and 10, bougainvillea can be used as a houseplant or hanging basket in cooler climates. In the landscape, it makes an excellent hot season plant, and its drought tolerance makes bougainvillea ideal for warm climates year-round. Bougainvillea has a high salt tolerance, which makes it a natural choice for color on coastal regions. As a woody clambering vine, bougainvillea will stand alone and can be pruned into a standard, but it is perfect along fence lines, on walls, in containers and hanging baskets, and as a hedge or an accent plant. Its long arching branches are thorny, and bear heart-shaped leaves and masses of papery bracts in white, pink, orange, purple, and burgundy. Many cultivars, including double flowered and variegated, are available. Also it needs 60 degrees in the winter for its growing condition.

Twenty years after Commercon's discovery, it was first published as 'Buginvillea' in Genera Plantarum by A.L. de Jusseau in 1789. The genus was subsequently split in several ways until it was finally corrected to 'Bougainvillea' in the Index Kewensis in the 1930s. Originally, B. spectabilis and B. glabra were hardly differentiated until the mid 1980s when botanists recognized them to be totally distinct species. In early 19th century, these two species were the first to be introduced into Europe, and soon, nurseries in France and England did a thriving trade providing specimens to Australia and other faraway countries. Meanwhile, Kew Gardens distributed plants it had propagated to British colonies throughout the world. Soon thereafter, an important event in the history of bougainvillea took place with the discovery of a crimson bougainvillea in Cartagena, a Spanish port in the Mediterranean, by Mrs. R.V. Butt. Originally thought to be a distinct species, it was named B. buttiana in her honour. However, it was later discovered to be a natural hybrid of a variety of B. glabra and possibly B. peruviana - a "local pink bougainvillea" from Peru. Natural hybrids were soon found to be common occurrences all over the world. For instance, around the 1930s, when the three species were grown together, many hybrid crosses were created almost spontaneously in East Africa, India, the Canary Islands, Australia, North America, and the Philippines.

Many of today's bougainvillea are the result of interbreeding among only three out of the eighteen South American species recognized by botanists. Currently, there are over 300 varieties of bougainvillea around the world. Because many of the hybrids have been crossed over several generations, it's difficult to identify their respective origins. Natural mutations seem to occur spontaneously throughout the world; wherever large numbers of plants are being produced, bud-sports will occur. This had led to multiple names for the same cultivar (or variety) and has added to t

- The strawberry was a symbol for Venus, the goddess of love, because of its heart shape and red color.

- If you find a double strawberry, break it in half and share it with someone of the opposite sex. According to legend you will soon fall in love with each other.

- In provincial France, strawberries were regarded as an aphrodisiac of the highest quality. Newlyweds traditionally were served a soup of thinned sour cream, strawberries, borage and powdered sugar.

- The second wife of Henry VIII, Queen Anne Boleyn (1507-36), had a strawberry-shaped birthmark on her neck. Unfortunately, some claimed this fact proved she was a witch.

- Madame Tallien, a prominent figure at the court of the Emperor Napoleon, was famous for bathing in the juice of fresh strawberries. She used 22 pounds per basin, needless to say, she did not bathe daily.

- The strawberry is recognized as representing absolute perfection in the Victorian language of flowers.

- Medieval stonemasons carved strawberry designs on altars and around the tops of pillars in churches and cathedrals, symbolizing perfection and righteousness. During the same time period, strawberries were served at important state occasions and festivals to ensure peace and prosperity.

- In parts of Bavaria, country folk still practice the annual rite each spring of tying small baskets of wild strawberries to the horns of their cattle as an offering to elves. They believe that the elves, who are passionately fond of strawberries, will help to produce healthy calves and abundance of milk in return.

- Sacred to the both Goddess of Love and the Virgin Mary, strawberries boast a long, dramatic history. "Doubtless God could have made a better berry," wrote William Butler, "but doubtless God never did."

Role: IMAGINE PEACE TOWER in Second Life 09 Oct 09

Role: IMAGINE PEACE TOWER in Second Life 09 Oct 09

IMAGINE ALL THE PEOPLE LIVING LIFE IN PEACE
John and Yoko’s dream comes to Second Life®
by Jura Shepherd, ROLE Magazine, October 2009.

Piercing the sky above one of Second Life’s most northerly sims, stands a tower of light that began life as an artistic concept in the mind of a young, wild-eyed artist over forty years ago. The tower, named IMAGINE PEACE TOWER, will be officially open on October 9, 2009 and will stand as a symbol for universal peace. It is part of a life-long dream of Yoko Ono, the artist who conceived the idea for the real world and who commissioned it’s creation in SL.

The tower will replicate, as closely as possible, its real world counterpart which opened on October 9th, 2007 on Vi?ey Island in Kollafjor?ur Bay near Reykjavik, Iceland. The terrestrial version is made of fifteen powerful searchlights manipulated with mirrors to form a column of light that is tall enough to not only reach cloud cover, but has been seen to penetrate well beyond it. According to the University of Iceland, the light is so powerful that, if within the column itself, the light would still be visible with the naked eye from space and could be easily detected with instruments from much further away from our planet. The base of the tower is an elegant but austere cylindrical structure made of white stone that is meant to symbolically represent a well, specifically a wishing well. Circling the well are engravings of the phrase “IMAGINE PEACE” written in 24 different world languages.

There are 15 spotlights in all. 9 shine straight up from inside the well and 6 are in the 'corridors' around the base and are reflected up by 6 mirrors.

IMAGINE PEACE TOWER’s wishing well concept is one that is a continuation of Yoko Ono’s interactive art. After the passing of her husband John Lennon, Ono began to collect wishes based on a traditional idea from her childhood. “As a child in Japan, I used to go to a temple and write out a wish on a piece of thin paper and tie it around the branch of a tree. Trees in temple courtyards were always filled with people’s wish knots, which looked like white flowers blossoming from afar."

"All my works are a form of wishing” says Ono and indeed she has collected over 850,000 wishes since she started the project. In a 1996 interview, Yoko Ono explained: “I’ll tell you what’s going to happen: every piece of paper has a wish on it, I don’t read it, and all of them will be put in one big tower of a sculpture, like a totem. It will be a very powerful sculpture… a tower which contains wishes of the people of the world of our time. All in one tower!” What may have seemed like an abstract concept at the time is exactly what she did. The wishes Ono had collected over decades are buried under, and made a spiritual part of the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER.

The story of how IMAGINE PEACE TOWER has come to be in Second Life begins with SL developer Bernard Herzog, the elder of the father-son duo Herzog-Brenham. Inspired by the real world project, Herzog built a tower of light on the New Brighton sim that he owns. He took pictures and sent them to Yoko Ono’s IMAGINE PEACE website with the hopes of simply having them published to the site but they actually created a great deal of interest.

Ono would eventually see the pictures and it was agreed that if there was to be an IMAGINE PEACE TOWER in SL, it would need to be an accurate relative to its real world counterpart, and that Herzog-Brenham would be the ones to build it. Ono is known for forward thinking and was open to the idea of her concept crossing into virtual worlds. Bernard tells us, “It was not a hard sell and when I eventually met Yoko, she seemed genuinely excited and very open to the idea.”

Herzog-Brenham was introduced to Tetsuo Hamada and his son TetsuRo, who were responsible for the building of the real world IMAGINE PEACE TOWER and were supplied with blueprints, detailed documentation, and photos to work from. Herzog’s real life son and SL business partner, Dannyboy Brenham, has created scripting to handle the tower’s lighting sequence, which will happen at SL sunsets 6 times a day, as well as a special HUD to be used on the island and the handling of wishes sent in-world. Herzog says “I believe it's as realistic as it can be”.

The HUD operates the free Onochord torches and preloads textures to improve the experience of the tower lighting up.

At the time of the writing of this article, construction was still underway and moving at a frantic pace to meet the October 9th opening date which also happens to be John Lennon’s birthday. The IMAGINE PEACE TOWER sim is restricted access until then but there’s no doubt there is a great deal of excitement surrounding it. Bernard Herzog tells us, “It’s a fantastic honor to be working on something that is so close to Yoko's heart, albeit in a virtual world. I hope it captures a small part of the experience of visiting the re

Killer ladybirds are invading London (File:IMG 2567)

Killer ladybirds are invading London (File:IMG 2567)

Killer ladybirds (Harlequin Ladybird) are invading London and are threatening the Capital's insects and plants.

The large Multivariate Asian Ladybird - a native of Japan and Siberia - has been spotted in London, and has brought with it a new threat of terror to the Capital's ladybird population.

It is not known how the foreign ladybirds entered the country, but the illegal immigrants are thought to have arrived via intercontinental rail, or on imported fruit and flowers.

Many of the foreign colonies have been spotted in south west London - including the Chelsea, Lambeth, Northern Wandsworth and Southwark boroughs, with experts believing the Harmonia axyridis - to give the species it's Latin name - will spread further east along the Thames as it breeds.

London residents have been asked to keep guard and look out for the large aphid - roughly 6-8mm long. The ladybird can be identified by its white patches down the side of the fore-body, usually coloured red or orange with up to 19 black spots. It may sometimes be coloured black with two to eight red patches.

The public has been asked to send specimens or photographs of unusual specimens for identification to Michael Majerus

Information:
Michael Majerus, Dept of Genetics, University of Cambridge, CB2 3EH
Ladybirds travel well by post if securely packed in a small, strong container such as a photographic film tube.

Light blue is my favorite color!! When I saw this vase on call of the small blog I had to get it.

Since spring the weeds and flowers in our yard have been going nuts! I harvested a few flowers a dried them out in my closet. I hung them upside down.

Recently,I bought a used book about flower preservation. Some dried flowers will keep as long as they are out of direct sunlight. I did not treat them with any chemicals.

Funny thing is people hate weeds but I have found some pretty miniature flowers in the weeds! haha! These flowers however, are not from weeds. They grow on bushes here in the Eastern part of the US. I don't know the name of the bush/tree.

This set is soothing in the warm and cool colors of the ocean. The large pitcher is a Majolica style and I used a Chartreuse underglaze on the leaves to bring some dimension to the color. The Bleeding Hearts vase is seagreen with Fushia colored hearts. The tall vase has one delicate Calla Lilly wrapping around the shoulder, and I made some simple paper Calla Lily flowers to have something equally delicate to accent. The Frog is a flower frog in a low bowl in soft matte green. The tiny pitcher has a tiny branch in low relief. The small vase has a Dogwood and lines design that I carved in low relief.
