La Rinconcita - pupusas, tamarindo and mango juice Tai scarfed the muffin down, and we were off to Commercial Drive. Commercial Drive is like Echo Park - cute little shops, cheap eateries, local-made boutiques, situated in a beautiful neighborhood full of families, immigrants and creative young types (like us, or whatever). If we get a chance to live in Vancouver, we'll be looking for apartments right here. Now, other than checking out shops, we had a holy mission before us: to eat at Rinconcita, billed by some as the city's best Salvadoran restaurant. There's a place in Echo Park called La Paz which Tai and I practically worship. It is absolutely imperative that we find a suitable Canadian substitute for its heavenly pupusas. This is what pupusas look like. They are corn patties stuffed with various things like cheese, beans, pork, loroco flower, etc. They are served with a special sauce and pickled cabbage. Tai's not into the cabbage, but since Russian cuisine has something similar, I can eat gobs of this stuff. These guys were pretty freakin delicious! Everything inside it is green and alive, and the effect is magnified by a wall of mirrors. It makes you feel kind of like you are entering a working greenhouse (or jungle)! 536 S. Hough St. This house was built near the intersection of Ela and Dundee Rds. When the railroad came to Barrington, it was put on a flat car and moved to Barrington and put down on a lot on East Station St., just east of what is now Barrington Flower Shop. It was moved again, this time to this lot by Garrett Landwer, to make room for a millinery store. It became the home of a Mrs. Hastings; then William Meyer. Later, Ward Olmsted, who ran the Standard Oil Bulk Station,when it was on Applebee St. by the railroad, lived in this house. 6-20-1989 Cafe Redux I did a similar shot to this just about a year ago in Lund Sweden. This one is from Cargo & James tea shop, on Barrington in Halifax. I do like my cliche shots, but I thought this was alright. While outside, I sat down on a bench and took some shots of the flowers for sale outside the store. Have I mentioned that I love doing photowalks in the afternoon while the sunlight is good? Welcome to Wintergarden This is one of my favorite places in all of Seattle. Wintergarden. A garden in the arboretum filled with plants that bloom and/or are fragrant in winter. All of these trees in bloom in this photo are Witch Hazel. They have a little fragrance. Just before you get to this place where I'm standing, though, the air is starting to smell sweet and your spirits lift. The closer you get the higher they go. There are several fragrant plants but it's the smell of sarcococca (also called sweet box) that fills the air. Several years ago after discovering this place I had to buy one for my yard. People are often confused by this evergreen plant., It is covered in teeny tiny flowers but you'd never think they could fill the air like they do. Just one plant makes me smile. Here in wintergarden there are many planted throughout the space. Even in the midst of winter you feel spring is about to burst out. Fragrant Flowers - Lady of the Night This is the very fragrant plant called "Lady of the Night" aka Brunfelsia nitida. This plant releases a wonderful fragrance at night which is hard to describe it is very unique smell. If I had to describe the fragrance I would say it's a intoxicating nutmeg smell. Every time I buy flowers, I know I'll have to deal with something sad a few days later ... Hopefully I won't be disappointing anyone by revealing that the photo was taken indoor with a flash. The grayish bleak background came from a wrinkly silver reflector. I held my 430EX with softbox next to the withering lily, pointing the flash to the ceiling to slightly illuminate the flower and also to get a tiny bit light bounce off the reflector. I challenged everything, was continually being evicted, jailed,in and out of fights, in and out of my mind. women were something to screw and rail at, I had no male freinds, I changed jobs and cities, I hated holidays, babies, history, newspapers, museums, grandmothers, marriage, movies, spiders, garbagemen, english accents,spain, france,italy,walnuts and the color orange. algebra angred me, opera sickened me, charlie chaplin was a fake and flowers were for pansies. peace an happiness to me were signs of inferiority, tenants of the weak an addled mind. but as I went on with my alley fights, my suicidal years, my passage through any number of women-it gradually began to occur to me that I wasn't different from the others, I was the same, they were all fulsome with hatred, glossed over with petty greivances, the men I fought in alleys had hearts of stone. everybody was nudging, inching, cheating for some insignificant advantage, the lie was the weapon and the plot was empty, darkness was the dictator. cautiously, I allowed myself to feel good at times. I found moments of peace in cheap rooms just staring at the knobs of some dresser or listening to the rain in the dark. the less I needed the better I felt. maybe the other life had worn me down. I no longer found glamour in topping somebody in conversation. or in mounting the body of some poor drunken female whose life had slipped away into sorrow. I could never accept life as it was, i could never gobble down all its poisons but there were parts, tenous magic parts open for the asking. I re formulated I don't know when, date, time, all that but the change occured. something in me relaxed, smoothed out. i no longer had to prove that I was a man, I did'nt have to prove anything. I began to see things: coffee cups lined up behind a counter in a cafe. or a dog walking along a sidewalk. or the way the mouse on my dresser top stopped there with its body, its ears, its nose, it was fixed, a bit of life caught within itself and its eyes looked at me and they were beautiful. then- it was gone. I began to feel good, I began to feel good in the worst situations and there were plenty of those. like say, the boss behind his desk, he is going to have to fire me. I've missed too many days. he is dressed in a suit, necktie, glasses, he says, "I am going to have to let you go" "it's all right" I tell him. He must do what he must do, he has a wife, a house, children. expenses, most probably a girlfreind. I am sorry for him he is caught. I walk onto the blazing sunshine. the whole day is mine temporailiy, anyhow. (the whole world is at the throat of the world, everybody feels angry, short-changed, cheated, everybody is despondent, dissillusioned) I welcomed shots of peace, tattered shards of happiness. I embraced that stuff like the hottest number, like high heels, breasts, singing,the works. (dont get me wrong, there is such a thing as cockeyed optimism that overlooks all basic problems just for the sake of itself- this is a shield and a sickness.) The knife got near my throat again, I almost turned on the gas again but when the good moments arrived again I did'nt fight them off like an alley adversary. I let them take me, i luxuriated in them, I bade them welcome home. I even looked into the mirror once having thought myself to be ugly, I now liked what I saw,almost handsome, yes, a bit ripped and ragged, scares, lumps, odd turns, but all in all, not too bad, almost handsome, better at least than some of those movie star faces like the cheeks of a baby's butt. and finally I discovered real feelings of others, unheralded, like lately, like this morning, as I was leaving, for the track, i saw my wife in bed, just the shape of her head there (not forgetting centuries of the living and the dead and the dying, the pyramids, Mozart dead but his music still there in the room, weeds growing, the earth turning, the toteboard waiting for me) I saw the shape of my wife's head, she so still, I ached for her life, just being there under the covers. I kissed her in the, forehead, got down the stairway, got outside, got into my marvelous car, fixed the seatbelt, backed out the drive. feeling warm to the fingertips, down to my foot on the gas pedal, I entered the world once more, drove down the hill past the houses full and empty of people, I saw the mailman, honked, he waved back at me. Green Alkanet Pentaglottis sempervirens. Green alkanet's name goes back to the Arabic al-henna or henna shrub, whose roots supplied the red dye which Egyptian women used on their hair and nails. It's uncertain when it was introduced to Britain, or why, as unlike many plants and herbs it has no known medicinal properties. Most experts feel that it came from France or Spain in the Middle Ages and was often found growing near medieval abbeys. At that time it was cultivated as a source of red dye, and more recently has been used for tinting oils and cheap port wine. Whatever it might have been used for, it has established itself in my garden, and looks quite handsome in the shady border near the hedge. It has huge tap roots, and hairy upright stems. April Showers Bring May Flowers April knew she was in trouble when she saw Sunflower May glaring at her as she hurried back to her flowerpot. "What is THAT?!" scowled the Sunflower, eyeing April's cute new friend. "He's a field mouse," said April, her bottom lip quivering under the Sunflower's hard gaze. "A MOUSE? We need bees to help us pollinate, not some stupid mice! Who told you to bring back a mouse anyway?" yelled the Sunflower. "Who's gonna help us pollinate now?" "I don't know," sobbed April. "But he looked lonely and we're keeping him!" Meanwhile Dahlia May was flushing as red as her crimson flowerpot. She was the one who told April to get a mouse, not some bees. She also knew April was sympathetic towards that stereotype of empty-headed "blonde" flowers and wouldn't tattle on her. The mouse (whose name was Chester) liked April too; she was nice and played with him all afternoon. Chester (who was actually quite charming, for a mouse) got busy flirting with the elegant bird outside the window. They used the secret sign language of field critters to communicate that April needed some bees, and pronto. Which is how a little field mouse saved 3 May flowers, despite April showers. Scarlet Flax #7 - Unusual shape A few weeks ago I had to move to a new place, just as my scarlet flax were in mid-bloom. So I dug up a few of the smallest plants that had not yet bloomed and planted them in a large flower pot. A couple of weeks later the plants in the flower pot bloomed. To my surprise, one of the plants has star-shaped flowers. The petals are a distinctly different shape from the other scarlet flax. Unusual Flowering Plant - 006 I meant to upload these yesterday since it was Rob's b.d. and he took these shots, of a plant from our daughter, at my request. Monument to William and Richard Copeland, Master Potters, Saint Peter's Church, Stoke on Trent Copeland, William Taylor (1797–1868), pottery manufacturer, was born on 24 March 1797 at Lincoln's Inn Fields, London, the son of William Copeland (1765–1826), partner of the potter Josiah Spode II, and his wife, Mary (d. 1837), nee Fowler. He was brought up in the family home in Leyton, Essex, where he continued to reside for many years. On 29 April 1826 he married Sarah (1799–1860), daughter of John Yates, a potter. They had ten children, of whom a daughter and four sons, William Fowler Mountford (1828–1908), Edward Capper (1835–1875), Alfred James (1837–1921), and Richard Pirie (1841–1913), survived Copeland. Copeland entered the Spode-Copeland business on 19 July 1824 and was taken into partnership when his father died. Following the death of Josiah Spode in 1827 he became sole owner of the London business, and in 1833, owner also of the pottery at Stoke-on-Trent. In that year he went into partnership with Thomas Garrett, manager of the Stoke pottery, the firm being known as Copeland and Garrett. This partnership was dissolved in 1847 and the firm then traded as W. T. Copeland, late Spode. In 1867 his sons joined him in partnership as W. T. Copeland & Sons. Although he did not achieve the aesthetic eminence of Wedgwood, Copeland produced wares whose artistic quality raised the standard of ceramic manufacture. With the aid of his art director Thomas Battam (1810–1864), one of a family of ceramic artists, he gained worldwide renown. Copeland's artistic triumph came with the production of the refined statuary porcelain, or parian, introduced about 1842, and his reputation was further enhanced when this product was shown at international exhibitions. He employed eminent sculptors including John Gibson, whose Narcissus was commissioned by the Art Union Magazine in 1846. 1859 saw the appointment of the remarkable flower painter Charles Hurten. In 1866 Copeland was appointed china and glass manufacturer to the prince of Wales. Copeland was active in the promotion of machinery. His attempt in 1847 to introduce a mechanized ‘Jolley’ (a device to shape the interior of cups and deep bowls) was thwarted, but he was the first to install the newly patented Needham and Kite filter press in 1856. Copeland was the only manufacturer willing to undertake the exacting commission to tile the cupola of the Imperial Library, Paris, which opened in 1868. He also supported the formation of the schools of design in London and Stoke, the latter opening in 1847. Copeland was also active in local and national politics. He was elected alderman for Bishopsgate ward in 1828 and immediately served as sheriff of London and Middlesex in 1828–9. In 1835 he was elected lord mayor, the third youngest man to hold that office. He was a member of the Goldsmiths' Company and its master in 1837–8. He was for seven years president of the royal hospitals of Bridewell and Bethlem; he was a member of the Irish Society, which managed the City's Irish estates, president of the Honourable Artillery Company, a director of the London and Birmingham Railway Company, and a major investor in Fenton Park colliery. He was widely recognized as a generous man, supportive of charitable institutions, and upright in his dealings. Copeland contested the borough of Coleraine in 1831 and 1833 as a Liberal and was seated on petition in both years. He retained the seat until the general election of 1837 when he joined the Conservatives and was returned for Stoke-on-Trent. He was defeated in 1852 but held the seat once more from 1857 to 1865. He was never an active debater in the house. A keen sportsman, Copeland kept a stud of racehorses at his country residence, Russell Farm, Watford, Hertfordshire. He had another house at Cliffe Bank, Stoke, but spent much of his time in London. His health failed in the early months of 1868, and although he recovered enough for his doctors to consider him out of danger, he suffered a relapse. This is the third cruise to visit the city this cruise season and the first to have some, if only some, nice weather! MS Vision of the Seas is a Vision-class cruise ship for Royal Caribbean International, the last of her class. Her maiden voyage was on May 2, 1998, following which she sailed for a year in Europe before being moved to other routes. In summer the ship is based in Northern European ports like Oslo, Copenhagen or Stockholm to go on cruises to Norway, the Baltic Sea or the British Isles. During the fall season the ship sails in the Mediterranean from Venice or Istanbul and in winter the ship offers cruises in Brazil. NC - Randolph County - Old Highway 49 at Toms Creek Farm & Nursery Highway 49 is the direct route between Asheboro and Charlotte. I've driven that road many times in the 20+ years I've lived in central North Carolina. Old Highway 49 is a loop of the original Highway 49. The north end exits Highway 49 just outside of Asheboro and merges back into Highway 49 a few miles south of the Farmer community. I had never been on Old 49 till I rode with the realtor to look at a home. I had toured 15 homes, and this was the right home for me. I celebrated my 9 year anniversary in this home last week, so I have driven Old 49 over 10,000 times since that first ride with the realtor. I do not have curbside trash pick up. Each week I take my trash and recycling to a county convenience site on Highway 49. My preferred route is down Old 49. It has a mix of rolling farm hills, a variety of nice homes and a few "well lived in" trailers. There are also a few businesses along the road. One of the larger businesses is Tom's Creek Nursery. The nursery planted several clusters of bulbs along the roadside by the creek. I thought it looked beautiful today, so when I got home this morning, I picked up my camera and returned to shoot a few photos. I don't mind taking out the trash when this is the view I get on my route. Best wishes to everyone this weekend, and Happy Easter, too.
