Roadmaster Skyrider
Old girls bike for sale ($65) at antique shop in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The Skyrider dates to the late 1950s or early 1960s according to a couple Web sites. Seeing the bike made me wonder why bicycles made today don't have cool names like the Roadmaster Skyrider? For example, here are the names of some current Trek bikes: Drift, Wasabi, Lime and Navigator.

My drag racing 'root' is firmly planted. My dad, Eugene Llewellyn, actually planted my need for speed seed. He is the owner of Southeast Cycles in San Antonio, Texas and an avid drag racer himself.
Our family outings consisted of loading my father's Honda nitro funny bike onto the trailer and heading out to Alamo Dragway. I can remember looking forward to racing each weekend with enthusiasm because besides watching my dad race, my brother and I would get to race against each other on our Dandy 'pocket rocket' bikes.
The racing bug bit me (again) while pit crewing for my brother in late 1994. The same feeling I would get when my brother and I would race, the intensity and excitement of racing all came back to me. I asked my father if he would build me a dragbike, mind you he already had an idea of what kind of dragbike he wanted to build me, he just wanted to make sure I was going to be 100% committed to the project. He didn't want me to get fed up and abandon the whole thing.
My father sat me down and went over the cost and time it would take to build a dragbike. Within a week I had bought a GS1150, my dad and brother totally gutted the bike and sent the bare chassis to Robbie at RLM (in San Antonio) to get raked. I had already used all of my savings, but my drive and determination wouldn't let lack of money be a problem for me. I took on a second job, worked some overtime and used my quarterly bonuses to finish my dragbike. In the meantime, my father and brother wanted me to get a feel for a dragbike, although I had rode motorcycles since I was seven years old, piloting a dragbike was a different concept.
My father and brother would have me practice burnouts and dry-hops in front of the shop. He and my brother decided in order to get the full effect decided in order for me to get the full effect of racing down the quarter mile, I would need to go out to the track and actually do some shakedown passes on my brother's dragbike. On the weekends if my brother went out in competition early, I would get to make some passes on the bike. He had a KZ900 1428cc with a 3-speed automatic transmission. My brother gave me some informal training on piloting the bike. My first couple of passes were in the 10's and 11's. I was just getting acquainted with the dragbike, so my brother told me not to worry about the e.t. I had to get used to the launch, as well as using body finesse if the bike should get out of shape or starts to drift and most importantly keeping the bike on the 'power band' by being able to hit all my shift points. The third weekend on the bike I took all my informal training and turned in a 9.18 @ 140mph!
I was already looking past just racing at the local track. Turning my hobby into a 'career' as a professional racer like Dave Schultz and John Myers was highly unlikely, ESPECIALLY for a woman. I decided I would hone my skills, get my license and race the Division 4 circuit. All that changed in July 1996 when Stephanie Reaves (the first women to ever receive an NHRA PSB license and qualify for a national event) along with Angelle Sampey and Karen Stoffer qualified for the Mile-High Nationals in Denver. The prostock motorcycle class was forever changed. These women came into a male-dominated sport and proved they were a force to be reckon with. Without these pioneers, it would be impossible for me to even consider a career in drag racing, at that point I reassessed my priorities. It took 2 1/2 years before my bike was finished, but I had decided to make racing a prostock motorcycle my #1 goal.
In the meantime I raced at my local track, the Texas Shootout and several races in and around Texas. In 2000, I got the opportunity of a lifetime. The chance to compete in NHRA PSB for the 2001 race season for Harry and Joann Lartigue of Lartigue Racing! After getting the job, I was scheduled to go to Houston to do some test passes on the bike. I don't remember being that nervous, but my dad was. We first practiced burnout and dryhops, but I really couldn't wait for was a full pass. We were looking to do some 8.20's mind you the fastest pass I had ever gone was 8.93 @ 147mph. Geez! a prostock bike does 150 mph at half track! Harry wanted me to get familiar with the launch, the shifting (which is a lot quicker), just the whole process of riding a prostock bike. This is funny, but Harry said when he taps me on my back to go ahead and stage. Well, I was so anxious that I did my burnout, pulled up and turned on my first bulb, then second, the lights blinked and

In the 1960's it must have been every "cafe racer's" dream to own one of these. The ingenuity of race bike builders meant that it was inevitable that one day somebody would build a hybrid bike that combined the superb handling of the Norton Featherbed frame with the renowned performance of Triumph's engines.
This one's got everything on the Father Christmas list: alloy rims, twin leading shoe front brake, clip-ons, rear-sets, racing tank, racing seat, central oil tank, swept-back pipes and reverse-cone megaphones. I always thought the pre-unit engine / gearbox looked so much better than the later unit construction. These look superb in what appears to be the much sought-after "slimline" version of the Featherbed frame.

This is my husband, running on our treadmill, an ancient hand-me-down model my parents donated to us.
Three short months ago, I'd never have thought I'd see this man who "hated exercise" because it was "boring" and "hated running even more" running. But here he is.
24 pounds lighter than when he started, Dan and his coworkers started a weight loss pool before the holidays. He started walking on his lunch hours and then using the treadmill at home. He did not deprive himself of food but cut way down on fast food and junky stuff in general. He ate when hungry and stopped when full. And slowly but surely, the weight started coming off.
He won the pool this week, and in typical Dan fashion, is using the money to buy something for his coworkers or to take them to lunch.
I'm both proud of and inspired by all of this. Our TV watching time is now spent with one of us on the treadmill or recumbent bike. Family movie night features popcorn and grapes. We never eat fast food any more, save for our weekly pizza with spinach and tomato. When we snack at night, which isn't often, it's on fruit or veggies.
One change at a time, it can happen. If someone who "hates" exercise can do this, anyone can.
Tomorrow is Dan's birthday and my wish for him is that he sees what he's done in taking charge of his wellness and translates that into more achievements that bring him happiness. I love you, babe and am very proud of you.

If you are going to go on a bike ride to downtown St. Paul and back with your friend, do it on a night where there are no thunderstorms forecast. Seriously. You can't tell much from the photo, but I am SOAKED. When I squeezed my gloves on my hands water came out. I rung my clothes out before I put them in the dryer.
It all started like fun and games, my bike has been a little sketchy, the chain has a tendency to fall off but it pops back on in no time and was nothing I couldn't endure for the ride.
The first half of the trip. Total success, therefore there is nothing interesting to say about it.
The second half, went about as smoothly as anything you'd label as a "disaster."
In the beginning: Alex's bike was getting noticeably bumpy. When we stopped at the halfway point, I noticed my tire was low. We decide to trek back home and I decided my tire was too low to ride, so we'd walk the bikes to a nearby gas station and refill the tire. We walked close to 20 blocks with no sign of a gas station. Part of the way there, we attempted to order mcdonald's on our tall bikes. Technically, we had a vehicle, but they wouldn't respond to our requests for a beverage. We sallied forth and walked past an auto body shop that had a vending machine and I bought us both sodas with the change I had. Three blocks later, we find a closed Super America station with an air pump, finally. 75 cents for air, the pump stated. That would have been fine if I HADN'T SPENT THE CHANGE THREE BLOCKS PRIOR. Just now, it starts to rain. Not a big deal, I expected a bit of rain, and it wasn't too bad.
Thankfully, only two blocks later, we find a holiday station that's open twenty four hours. I get some change and use their air pump. Bike ride continues.
My chain decided it didn't want to stay on for more than a block for about the next six blocks. My friend has pulled far ahead of me by now and I can't even see him on the road. I hop back on my bike and pass a bar at closing time. Some drunk idiot saw me on my tall bike and yelled "whoa, nice unicycle!" Single greatest statement of the night.
I catch up to my friend and he's sitting on a bench messing with his back wheel. Turns out his chain started falling off as well. By now it is downpouring and as luck would have it, my tube was in fact popped so every gas station we rode by I refilled my tire.
We made it back into minneapolis around 2:45 am and my friend went to Hard Times cafe where he works. I journeyed back to my apartment where this photo was taken. It felt like I had been swimming in my clothes.
The best part? My night was fantastic. It was probably the single best bike ride I've ever been on, I've never laughed that many times at what could possibly go wrong.

This bike is the first Rivendell I ever saw, probably found in an internet search in 2002 while looking up info on my C'dale cross bike. It still strikes me as the most beautiful bike I've ever seen, oddly, since there is nothing inherently special about it, especially after all the custom and vintage track and road bikes that have passed my eyes.
When Riv came out with the new site, I scoured the internet to find this image before it was gone forever, eventually finding it in the waybackmachine internet archive.

"TM has this to say about his early Waterford-build Cyclocross bike:
I'm finally sending a picture of my Riv cyclocross bike. I purchased the frameset from Gary Boulanger about two years ago, after promising to take good care of it. It's a Waterford-built Riv, with All-Rounder lugs and fork crown. I do quite a bit of racing on this bike, so the parts lean toward the boring-but-predictable side: Ultegra shifters, rear derailleur, and hubs. It has a Sugino AT crank with a Suntour greaseguard 125mm bottom bracket. I run this crank as a double, and it has a Q of about 151 (quite low!). The rims are FIR tubulars, with Tufo 34mm tires, which are fat and light. Other parts include a Nitto stem and post, Dirtdrop bars, and Mafac cantis with Kool-Stop salmon pads. I think the pump peg on the left seatstay is a great idea.
I love how this bike rides; it's smooth and predictable, but nimble enough to negotiate twisty singletrack. It draws compliments at every race. Last week at the top of a nasty run-up, a woman yelled "Go pretty bike!" - made me smile."

Plenty of nice parks in Tokyo but it seems that you can't cycle inside the park. Shame. Quite nice to cycle in about 20 degrees celsius temperature.
Trying out the Bike Brain application by BioLogic. Seems nice. But I can't set starting and ending address and use it as a route planner. Got the iPhone 4 case from BioLogic too as it can rotate and it's suppose to be waterproof. But it's so hard to read the screen in the sun. Battery drain is also another problem. Oh well.. May be a dedicated bike navi system. Garmin?

This is the new blue Dahon MU P24 I am using. 24-speeds of folding joy.
I installed fenders and a touring rack, and added a trunk bag so I needn't use my backpack anymore.

Bicycle Bokeh
On Flickr you can find many photos of 50mm masters (you know who they are). Beautiful creamy, sharp and colorful images with lots of bokeh. And notable: in many of these artworks typography is used. Fascinated by the strong depth of field, it is through these photographs that i bought a camara with a 50mm lens in the summer of 2010. My setup: a D700 + 50mm f/1.4 Nikkor.
Initially the 50mm f/1.4 Nikkor was difficult for me to handle. Almost every picture was overexposed and i did not got that beautiful bokeh pictures. As a study i then began to practice processing, which is an essential part photography (at least i think so.) i used bicycles as my main learning subject. The next period i'm updating my stream with some of these old and new photos. i hope you enjoy Bicycle Bokeh!

Raleigh Bicycle Head Badge Robin Hood Radford Nottingham
Raleigh's history started in 1887, in Raleigh Street, Nottingham. A prosperous 38-year-old, Frank Bowden bought a bicycle made by Messrs Woodhead, Angois and Ellis because his doctor had told him to ride a bicycle for his health. Bowden was impressed by his bicycle and went to Raleigh Street to find the makers. Woodhead, Angois and Ellis were making three bikes a week. Bowden made them an offer and bought the business. Production rose and three years later he needed a bigger workshop, which he found in a four-storey building in Russell Street. He changed the company's name to Raleigh Cycles to commemorate the original address.
In six years Bowden created a business which became the biggest in the world and occupied seven and a half acres in Faraday Road, Nottingham.
