Piccadilly Circus at dawn Explore #336 This is the time (on a Saturday morning) when you cross very few people. It's hard to tell if they are back from a night out or off to work (other weirdos are just out to take pictures)...one way or another...they were tired and so was I. Piccadilly Circus is a famous road junction and public space of London's West End in the City of Westminster, built in 1819 to connect Regent Street with the major shopping street of Piccadilly. In this context a circus, from the Latin word meaning a circle, is a circular open space at a street junction. Its status as a major traffic-intersection has made Piccadilly Circus a busy meetingplace and a tourist attraction in its own right. The Circus is particularly known for its video display and neon signs mounted on the corner building on the northern side, as well as the Shaftesbury memorial fountain and statue of an archer popularly known as Eros (sometimes called The Angel of Christian Charity, but intended to be Anteros). It is surrounded by several noted buildings, including the London Pavilion and Criterion Theatre. Directly underneath the plaza is Piccadilly Circus London Underground station. Piccadilly Circus used to be surrounded by illuminated advertising hoardings on buildings, starting in the early 1900s, but only one building now carries them, the one in the north-western corner between Shaftesbury Avenue and Glasshouse Street. The site is unnamed (usually referred to as Monico after the Cafe Monico which used to be on the site); its addresses are 44/48 Regent Street, 1/6 Sherwood Street, 17/22 Denman Street and 1/17 Shaftesbury Avenue, and has been owned by property investor Land Securities Group since the 1970s. The earliest signs used incandescent light bulbs, these were replaced with neon lamps, as well as moving signs (there was a large Guinness clock at one time). From December 1998 digital projectors were briefly used for the Coke sign , while the early 2000s have seen a gradual move to LED displays. The number of signs has reduced over the years as the rental costs have increased. As of 2008, the site has six illuminated advertising screens above three large retail units, facing Piccadilly Circus on the north side, occupied by Boots, and GAP and a mix of smaller retail, restaurant and office premises fronting the other streets. A Burger King located under the Samsung advert which had been previously a Wimpy Bar until the late 1980s had closed in early 2008 and has now been converted into a Barclays Bank. Coca-Cola have had a sign at Piccadilly Circus since 1955. The sign dates from September 2003, when the previous digital projector board and the site formerly occupied by Nescafe was replaced with a state-of-the-art LED video display that curves round with the building. On November 23 2007 the very first film was broadcast through the board. Paul Atherton's film The Ballet of Change: Piccadilly Circus was allowed five minutes to show the first non-commercial film depicting the history of Piccadilly Circus and the lights. The former Nescafe advert site had also been occupied by a neon advertisement for Fosters until about 1999 and for three months in 2002 between the display of the Nescafe advert and the enlarged Coca Cola advert this part of Piccadilly Circus had featured the quote "Imagine all the people living life in peace" by Beatle John Lennon. This was paid for by his wife Yoko Ono who spent an estimated ?150,000 to display an advert at this location. Sanyo's sign is the oldest out of the six, having been installed in the late 1980s and remaining unchanged ever since. However, earlier Sanyo signs with older logos have occupied that position since at least 1980. TDK replaced the space formerly occupied by Kodak in 1990. Their sign has remained almost unchanged since, although in 2001 the colour of the background lamps were changed from green to blue, and the words 'Audio & Video Tape' and 'Floppy Disks' under the logo was removed. McDonald's added a sign in the mid-1980s, replacing one for BASF. In 2001 the sign was changed from neon to an animated LED screen, which was further changed to a bigger, brighter LED screen in 2008. Samsung replaced a sign for Panasonic in November 1994 , and the sign was upgraded from neon to LED in 2005. Piccadilly Lite was added on 3 December 2007, placed under the Samsung and McDonald's signs. This is an LED screen that allows other companies to advertise for both short and long term leases, increasing the amount of advertising space but using the same screen for multiple brands. The British mobile telephony company Vodafone used to have a neon sign installed on the roof of Coventry House, which diagonally faces Piccadilly Circus. In addition to the logo of the company, the sign displayed personal messages that could be submitted on a special website and displayed at a certain time and date. As of February 2007, this has been replaced by a new, larger LED video-advertising displ Big City Burlesque I Need Fast Glass . . . Bike Parking Colorado. From my stop at one of the aid stations on the Ride the Buffalo Bicycle ride September 2009. I had to drop out due to mechanical problems. I was most unhappy about that. I've done this ride three times before, though. Tire Burn Down They got together and did burnouts to see who could burn through the rubber the first and blow the tire. They didn't finish which is probably a good thing because I would hate to see any kind of damage to these awesome bikes. White Brick School Bristol , Indiana. Some things just have a way of working out. I was making good time driving back from Michigan when I was detoured off the main highway, in Elkhart, Indiana. The detour was not marked all that well or i was doing to much sightseeing, but a few miles into being misplaced, I saw the school ahead. With a guy coming out of a woodworking shop toward the road I pulled in to ask directions and see what I could find out about the school. Chuck and Nancy Tubbs, were perfect hosts ,showing me around the school and even extending an invitation to come in and look around. The history of the school follows and also posted a set of photos of the school with an interior shot of it. The way they have restored it, makes for a distinctive home and larger than one might think. ............................................................................................................................................................ . 1878 One Room Schoolhouse Chuck and Nancy Tubbs moved into a one room schoolhouse in Bristol, Indiana in October. The school was built in 1878 and was called White Brick School because it was built out of a very light color brick. About 9 to 12 students a year went to school there until 1929, when it was closed. Actually it doesn’t have just one room anymore. There is now a small kitchen, a den, and a bathroom. It has a loft above the kitchen and a very small loft (which now houses our harp, dulcimer, and flutes) above the bathroom. The rest of the house is still one large room with a 25’ high ceiling and roof beams a foot thick. With brick walls two feet thick and a chimney (for the furnace and wood-burner) in the center of the room, it really holds the heat well in the winter. The school also has a little history from the towns in the area built right in. The front door came from an old church in Shipshewana, Indiana, the brick under the wood-burner (which has designs carved into it and makes a good foot massager when you walk across it) was the sidewalk brick in Wabash, Indiana. The brick walkway outside was at one time a street in Tippecanoe, Indiana and the large ceiling fan used to be in the old Myer grocery store in Bristol, Indiana (and it still works). One section is being kept in the schoolhouse theme. It still has the white brick showing on the inside of the house and the original wainscot. An old double seat school desk sits if front of the wainscot with schoolbooks and supplies from the same time period displayed on the desk. There is a shelf around the perimeter of the main room about 10’ up the wall. This is perfect for displaying antique items and old pictures of family members. The floor is carpeted, but will be changed to a wood floor in the future. There are oil lamps everywhere (and some electric also) that get plenty of use, as they light up the house well, are cheaper to use than electric, and we just like the light they put out. The kitchen is small (but Chuck will adjust) but it has a wonderful Hoosier Cabinet and a pie safe. The cabinet doors are built is such a way that when we get tired of looking at them we can just pop out the wood panels and insert stained glass or screen to match the pie safe. What a wonderful way to redecorate inexpensively and often. We are planning to turn the den into a late 1800’s style office (except for the computer). We will be going to an auction at Jefferson School (where the students went to school after ours was closed) this summer to try to get some wainscot for the walls. There will be a wood floor and we put in an old style light with a circular carved ceiling piece around the light. We have an old foreman’s desk and an old cabinet that was actually manufactured by the Tubbs (same as our last name) Manufacturing Company in Michigan and has the name Tubbs on all the handles and on a brass plate at the top of the cabinet. When this room is complete it will be like stepping back in time. An extra heated one stall garage will serve great for Nancy’s craft room. With a window to look out at the fields. An old shed is going to be converted into Chuck’s woodwork shop. Both shops have large doors that can be left open in the summer. With no close neighbors and the old flavor of the house, it’s a great place to relax, watch the deer, and enjoy the evening. In the future it will be a great place to retire and reflect on the past. Article and Picture No Paper or No Plastic? By Jon Dalton Reluctantly setting aside the lofty and complicated socioeconomic maladies Michigan’s largest city faces, and even more reluctantly setting aside possible solutions, there is one issue that everybody living in Detroit knows about more than any student of sociology. For too long a time now, Detroiters have had to drive at least ten miles out of their way to get the groceries they need. This isn’t to say that there are no places to get groceries in Detroit. Honey Bee Market, Eastern Market, University Food Center, a downright enviable amount of private convenient stores and plenty of places that sell food secondarily such as CVS Pharmacy are all great places to get certain items and can absolutely provide enough to tide an average not-too-picky shopper over. For an area as bustling as the Motor City, however, it just isn’t enough. Try this: Think of your favorite chain grocery store, the place you can get everything you need and cheap! Now open another tab (don’t use this one!) and google that store. Now click on google maps and take a moment to bask in the awe of the convenience that is the twenty first century and how quickly you can get almost anything should the mood strike. In the event of a nuclear war, Global Warming doom, a SARS outbreak or even a zombie attack, you can rest assured knowing you can fully stock your underground bunker without breaking the bank. Now go back to the search bar with your favorite store and type “Detroit” next to it. Notice anything? A standoffish bubble around a certain city, maybe? It might be the fault of ineffectual city planners, it might be that your favorite store didn’t care to help Detroit out, or it could be that the amount of crime in every inch of the city simply makes doing business here more trouble than it’s worth. Whatever the reason, the abundance, quality, convenience and thrift of major chain grocery stores is something Detroit is going to have to do without. This is just tough luck for those men and women who work long hours and only have later at night to shop, anyone who prefers a certain variety and doesn’t have transportation, or for a family on a budget who like to buy in bulk and keep an eye out for sales. But really, how many people fitting those descriptions could be in Detroit? Hypothetically, if just one superstore planted itself firmly in an accessible location of the city how much might the roughly 30% of Detroiters who are on food stamps save on grocery costs? How much gas money would they get to keep? How many lives could be improved in untold ways by someone simply having one thing they need to help them through the week? Let’s not even deal with the jobs that would be created or we might start getting depressed. Sociologists have noticed the lack of grocery stores in urban areas vs. suburbs in other cities as well, on the off chance that anyone out there isn’t tired of hearing this though, analysts say it’s particularly bad in Detroit. As usual, assigning blame is too easy… and too difficult, and if anyone isn’t doing all they can to fix the problem, they surely know who they are. Let’s just make sure that if and when a Wal-Mart, Kroger, Meijer, etc. decides to join our city, the first thing they see is a welcome mat and a group of eager shoppers waiting with bells on… and food stamps… See also: tire pressure check 22 rims and tires discount tire peachtree city ga mud lite atv tires spare tire covers canada car tire diameter spare tire hold down |

Tyrrell Six-Wheeled Grand Prix Car Here are some interesting facts about this unusual race car. Car: Tyrrell-Ford P34 Engine: V-8 Ford-Cosworth DFV Maker: Tyrrell Bore X Stroke: 85.7 X 64.8 mm Year: 1976 Capacity: 2,993 CC Class: Formula 1 Power: 485 bhp at 10,600 rpm Wheelbase: 96.6 in Track: 48.6 in Front, 58 in Rear Notes: Total weight: 1311.8 lbs Denis Jenkinson describing the first time he laid eyes on the Tyrrell P34. This famous car was the handiwork of Tyrrell's chief designer Derek Gardner. It's most striking feature of course was the use of four 10 in. wheels instead of the regular two. The front-end layout was intended to "... minimize induced drag by reducing lift at the front and to turn that gain into the ability to enter and leave corners faster". The use of four small disc brakes required a special triple master-cylinder system, each feeding the brakes on one of the three axles. This was necessary as adjustments were required to control locking at the four front wheels. If the two front wheels locked first, then the effective wheelbase of the car was shortened and if the second set of front wheels locked first this resulted in the effective wheelbase being lengthened. The size of the front tires put special stress on the cross-ply tires Goodyear supplied. Had radial-ply Michelin tires been available to the team the story might have been different. Unfortunately Goodyear's tire development program did not have the capacity to properly support the special 10 in. tires used by the P34. The high point for what was known as Project 34 came at the Swedish Grand Prix in 1976 where Jody Scheckter came in first followed by his teammate Depailler in second. After two seasons and the departure of Derek Gardner the experiment was abandoned. Goodyear Marking tire high point After measuring the run-out using a dial indicator, tire technicians may use a crayon or grease pen to mark the high point of radial run-out. In this case the overall run-out is .04 inch. Then the technician would loosen the lug nuts of the hub piloted system, spin the tire/wheel until the high point is at the top, and tighten the lug nuts with the high point of run-out at the 12 o'clock position. car lost tire I don't really have the guts to take pictures of strangers. But as our car was driving by, I took this photo of a truck that lost it's wheel. A woman and her son were by the car and were giving me the evil eye. We looped around across the street to get a better shot but by then the husband came with a jack and tire. And he kept giving me the evil eye so I lost my nerve. Good tires ... idle. How sad :( The GOOD tires sat in the corner of my kitchen, instead of serving their purpose on my car. Day One Hundred and Thirty Three: And you asked me what I want this year, and I try to make this kind and clear, just a chance that maybe we'll find better days, because I don't need boxes wrapped in Better Days, by The Goo Goo Dolls I don't know how to make what I want clearer. You know, I know, we all know at this point. It's role reversal of last year, swear to god. I'm not really a fan. I liked my role better, but can't I be this year, and you can be the last? It honestly doesn’t matter how tired I am. Last night I was so exhausted from studying bio all night. To the point where I couldn’t think straight, and it wasn’t doing anything to stare at my notecards for any longer. So I went to bed. Want to know what I did? Stared at my ceiling for an hour and a half. But you’d never know. People are so caught up in themselves to realize their surroundings. I’ve never been one to sit in the back, especially not for this class. Morning just kind of flew by. Whole day did, truthfully. Bio seems to go a hell of a lot faster when you’re taking a test. Staying after school for an hour seems to go faster when taking a test. English seems to go faster when you actually like the book. French just goes over my head, honestly. Can we at least fake it? Fake knowledge, fake understanding, fake participation. I’m the biggest supporter of the truth, but some cases cause for a little bending of the truth. She’s such a threat to me, even though I know I’m better than her. I know I’m just an all around better person. Why are we so willing to forgive someones flaws so easily? Why are we able to overlook the facade? Took pictures, did math, did art, drank tea, and watched One Tree Hill. A good evening, by far. I’m getting you back into my life, but I don’t know how to make it clear it isn’t that far. It’s an immediate trigger for me when people are jealous. I’m not that type of person. I’ve had bad experience trying to deal with jealousy, so I just distance myself from it. The minute you let it slip that you were jealous of a friendship, I was done. Insert things I’d like to say, but can’t. I need to remember I have an audience, and I never know who’s decided to show up for todays showing. Dear fake photographers of flickr: stop adding fake bokeh to your photos. It’s cheap, trashy, and shows that you rely on editing to make your photos look good. I’m sorry, but at least put the bokeh where it would naturally go. How Do You Say, "There's a Spider in my Bathroom," in Spanish or Quechuan? You can't tell from this image, but this guy was about 6" - 8" in diameter. I'm not exaggerating. After 4 days of trekking through the Andes to Machu Picchu, I spent an extra night in Aguas Calientes so I could have an extra day to explore the area. My hotel was up hill about a mile from the center of town. I had spent the afternoon drinking with my fellow trekkers and was somewhat saddened that I was the only one who was staying on an extra night. Drunk, ragged, tired, smelly and weighted down with all of my gear, I hauled myself up to my hotel. This guy was waiting for me in the bathroom. I needed a shower so badly I didn't care. Knowing that my Spanish was not going to be good enough to explain to the attractive, young Peruvian girl at the desk on the overnight shift I took a picture to show her. She gasped a "what do you want me to do about it?" smile that translates beyond any language barrier and transcends any cultural differences. I flashed my best, "I know, but I'm tired, drunk and just want to be taken care of," shrug. She came upstairs with me and shreiked when she saw the thing on the shower door. She went down the hall, returned with a broom and dust pan and took care of it for me. I had such mixed feelings of entitlement and inadequacy, all tempered with extreme gratitude. The next day as I was wasting time in the town square before my train back to Cusco, I ran into her with a bunch of her friends. She made me take out the camera to show them the spider. One of them was a tour guide and naturalist who spoke English very well. He told me I was right in getting rid of the spider because it was poisonous and had no business in a hotel. I took them both out for lunch and drinks. She got smashed on a single glass of wine. He was grateful I taught him the phrase, "cheap date," and resolved to use it with his next tour. Let's start! Good. We are in 2008. ...then? No, because I, maybe it's the weather, maybe because I'm getting older, I don't feel different than a couple of days ago. On the contrary, maybe I'm also a bit more tired... Then, between us, I don't expect nothing special from this new year... Maybe I'm a little cynical, but I think it will be a rubbish as the last one. But, with a minimum hope, I write this wish/good proposal list: a. b. I want to make me thin and become handsome and charming! c. I'd like to start a radio show. d. I'd like not to miss European LC Championship on TV, because I miss them everytime.. e. f. g. I'd like to become a better person. To be honest, sincere and less self-centered. h. I want to free myself from these damn chains. i. I'd like to change a lot of things. To change. j. I'd like to shout at the top of my voice "VAFFANCULO!!" k. I'd like to learn how to translate "Vorrei che tutti ci volessimo bene." : ) l. I'd like to (re)start to study russian language. m. I'd like to hear no more: "Japanese music is cartoon music.". n. With this list, certainly uncomplete, I want to wish to all of you an exceptional (and fotogenic) 2008. I want it to be more beautiful than beauty. More amusing than the amusement. Wealthier than the wealth. Because sometimes we deserve it. And because this is a leap year. Bene. Siamo nel 2008. ...e quindi? Voglio dimagrire e diventare bono. c. Vorrei iniziare un programma in radio. d. Vorrei non perdermi gli Europei di nuoto, che puntualmente vengono trasmessi senza la minima informazione e me li perdo. e. f. g. Vorrei diventare una bella persona. Dentro. Essere sincero, onesto, meno egocentrico. h. Voglio liberarmi da 'ste dannate catene. i. Vorrei cambiare un sacco di cose. Cambiare. j. Vorrei gridare a squarciagola "VAFFANCULO!!". k. Perche ogni tanto ci vuole. E perche quest'anno e bisestile. 2009-11-15 New Pop-Up Camper - 3 Came home from about the 4th uncomfortable, soggy, dirty campouts in a row and immediately hit Craig's List looking for pop-ups. Newton,s Grocery ...... Gone, but not Forgotten Located in Manton, Washington County, Kentucky. One of my favorite places to stop for lunch or a cold drink closed last week after a eighty-five year run. The time of country stores dotting the crossroads of rural America has come and gone. The purpose of any business is to make a profit, and if it can,t it has to go. With this being said I,m still going to miss this place. Jessie Osbourn, a staff writer for the local paper has been able to catch the essence of what a country store means to the community much better than I could. Below in the comment section are photos of the interior of the store that I took a few years ago. I have stopped several times in the past year to catch a better shot of the store and always have came up with an extremely dark look to the area under the porch. Won,t have to worry about trying anymore, besides all the old signs that adorned the building have been taken off and sold to the highest bidder. Jesse summed it up the best with his close in the article ............. " It’s the loafers that will suffer the most as they wander across the land like lost souls, looking for a new place to loaf. " ..................................................................................................................................................................... Piece by piece, history was uncovered, auctioned off and packed out of Manton General Store on Saturday. That history, 61 years of it, is now spread out across the land like ashes of the dead. And like a death of a loved one, the loss of the store is heavy for those who knew it. This funeral wasn’t all about mourning, though. There were plenty of smiles amongst the people jammed into the store on Saturday, too. Spectators commented and giggled when first a 1982 Montgomery Ward catalog sold for a few dollars, then a 1993 Sears catalog. One man, encouraged by the going rates, wondered aloud if he should auction off his jacket. The old catalogs were no match, however, for the old toaster and the cup full of ink pens. “All it needs is a little WD-40 and it’ll work,” auctioneer Kenny Corbett said about the toaster. Though a comedian on Saturday, Corbett was vocal about what the store meant to him a few days earlier. “I love to do auctions,” Corbett said. “But I didn’t want to do this one.” Corbett is one of the self-described loafers that spends time at the store with retirees and passersby. “My loafing spot is gone,” Corbett said. He said the closing of the store would be a sad time for people all over -Manton, Washington County, Marion County, even as far as Louisville. The store, operated by Vannie Newton for 57 years, has spent the last four years under the direction of John and Bobby Newton. Vannie and his father opened the store in 1950. After the auction on Saturday, the doors were locked. Vannie is the older brother to John and Bobby. Vannie passed away four years ago. The Newton brothers said their eldest used to have a fully stocked store, with items such as boots on sale. Until Saturday, the store still offered soft drinks, sandwiches, “odd and end groceries,” and cigarettes. The brothers, already retired, say they just got tired of running the store. Having a Wal-Mart eight miles down the road has hurt them as well, along with a bad economy, they said. The pot belly stove, that strictly burns wood according to the brothers, kept 15 to 20 people warm in the afternoon and evenings while the store was open. A parking spot was sometimes hard to come by, as some folks had to wait for a tractor to vacate a spot so they could park. For a time there were two gasoline pumps outside the store, but they were removed in the 1990’s. After the auction, the building, which the Newton brothers think was built around 1925, will be vacant until the owner, Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Manton, finds another use for it. The brothers didn’t know what intentions the church had for the building, if any, but they said they didn’t believe it would be another grocery store. The brothers said the building was owned by the church, but not any of the business that the store produced. John and Bobby said they didn’t have immediate plans for the new free time they acquired, but they would like to look for something with shorter hours. The store had been operating from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. six days a week, and then from 1-6 p.m. on Sundays. All of that is over now, as pieces of the store found new homes over the weekend. At least the old toasters and wooden boxes and cups full of ink pens have a home. It’s the loafers that will suffer the most as they wander across the land like lost souls, looking for a new place to loaf. I was going to add a pieced binding and had it all cut out and ready. Then I went to get the mail and opened a fabric purchase, laid it near the quilt and discovered I liked the striped fabric so much, I used it for the binding! pretty great timing! The binding is Alexander Henry seaweed stripe. A couple mistakes by the novice quilter (me). Used organic natural cotton batting. Not good for a quilt with lots of white-I can see all the little brown specks that are in this batting... Also, used cream colored thread to quilt on a white fabric. Also, got a big bubble in the backing after free motion quilting. such is life. Triangles Just to be thorough... some cheese slope triangles. Then I wondered how they differed from making triangles with the larger slopes, so I made a comparison. Obviously the color variation possibilities are much greater with cheese slopes. These aren't wedged in enough to be able to pick the whole thing up. Maybe if I shortened the length of the border by one plate or so.... triangle tires talon Superwinch 1695200 Talon 9.5, 12 VDC winch, 9,500 lb capacity with roller fairlead and wire rope 15’ ergonomically sealed handheld remote with coiled cord that retracts to 4’, connects to winch with military style twist lock, and LED light assists in night time winching. cone-n-the-barbarivan Did someone call the Cones Hotline? As I was wandering around the site, vaguely back towards my tent in the (very) early hours of Monday I looked behind me and found I had to move out the way of this van. My camera had long since died, but luckily my phone was switched on, and I quickly managed to take this phonecam snap as it went past! Tricky conditions My husband trying to reverse his company van onto the drive this evening. There's not much grip in a transit van in these conditions.
