Professor emeritus James Richard Bennett on October 12, 2009, at Trail of Tears Marker at University of Arkansas. Photo from Northwest Arkansas Times of October 13, 2009. Trail-of-Tears LEAD-BM t300 Trail of Tears stop remembered by UA event By Brett Bennett Tuesday, October 13, 2009 FAYETTEVILLE — Decades before historic Old Main was ever constructed, the University of Arkansas campus was the site of another historical event. Cherokees traveling the Benge Party route for the Trail of Tears camped on the hillsides that are now part of the UA and Fayetteville High School campuses at Garland Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. On Monday, groups of about 15 people walked from the Arkansas Union to the historic marker south of the UA soccer stadium to reflect on the Cherokees’ struggles as part of Indigenous Peoples of the Americas Day at the university. The Cherokees were forcibly relocated to Indian Territory, now Oklahoma, in the 1830s. Indigenous Peoples Day is planned as an alternative to Columbus Day. It is designed to give people time to reflect on the suffering of Native Americans, said Dick Bennett, of the Omni Center for Peace, Justice and Ecology. “We’ve been holding this on Columbus Day for five years now,” Bennett said. The Indigenous Peoples Day ceremonies were sponsored by the Omni Center, the UA Honors Film Association, Native American Student Association and the department of communication. The groups met first at the union to watch a documentary on Trail of Tears and read excerpts of poems and journals about the journey. UA student Arshan Dehbozorgi read an account of a Cherokee who traveled the trail when he was 9 years old. His father died first, and his mother later died while he was on the trail, leaving him to be taken care of by other members of the tribe. The passage also spoke about how the Cherokees were rounded up in stockades before receiving orders to begin the journey. After the walk from the union to the marker, walker Gloria Young made reference to the struggles faced by those walking along the trail. “How’d you like to do that every day for four months,” she said. According to a historical marker on the UA side of Garland Avenue, a group of 1,100 Cherokees camped there overnight on Jan. 13, 1839. There are two markers at the site - a sign close to the street and a plaque attached to a set of large rocks west of the sign and south of the soccer stadium. Bennett said he wishes the markers received more recognition, as they aren’t ver y noticeable from the road. John McLarty, president of the Arkansas chapter of the Trail of Tears Association, thanked the UA students and staff who walked down to the markers from the union. “Doesn’t it make a difference to be standing here than driving by?” McLarty said. The Cherokees, who resided in states like Georgia and Alabama before the relocation, lived very modern lifestyles for the 1830s before they were forced to travel the Trail of Tears, McLarty said. They lived in log homes, used cast iron stoves for cooking instead of clay pots and published a newspaper. The Cherokees were also progressive with sending representatives to Washington, D.C., to promote their causes, McLarty said. “They sent people to D.C. all the time,” McLarty said. Glenn Jones, vice president of the Trail of Tears, recalled how he tried to simulate the arduousness of the journey by walking down one of the current trails from Missouri to Benton County. Jones said he tried to dress in 19th century-style clothes and ate a breakfast meal that consisted of two pieces of bacon and a piece of corn bread. By the time he reached Cross Hollow near Lowell, he was tired, hungry and cold. Jones said he did that as a response to hearing one scholar suggest the Trail of Tears wasn’t as bad as it was made out to be. Jones said he also refuses to use or carry a $20 bill because it features a portrait of President Andrew Jackson, who initiated the removal of the Cherokees. “I do not carry a $20 bill. Never,” Jones said. “I use every denomination except the 20.” News, Pages 1 on 10/13/2009 cycle and/or die Jeudi 20 decembre. Un matin comme les autres. 6h55. Sleeping Bike A steep hill, I think maybe I went beyond the Metzlers for a few moments. This wasn't a crash at all, it was just the bike feeling sleepy after trying a tight turnaround. Again, the camera shows nothing of the steepness of the hill. Here, the rear tires are easily two feet above the seat. Was she hard to right on her wheels? You better believe it. Full tank of gas and all! Doesn't a litre of water weigh a kilogram? Sure felt like it. Ugh! Shot taken somewhere 1/2 way up the Powderface Trail, Alberta, Canada Oh! Also, not really sure how the "fall down" ended up filling my right sock with blood, but, there you go. Odd.... just a scratch on a root! OK, and not really "filling" it, but, yeah. Crystal Clear Blue Spring This is a place like a haven to me when I first see the crystal clear water along the Te Waihou walkway. I have never seen water can be that clear. It was the source to be used to supply about 40% of the spring water in New Zealand. Although it was so beautiful but there were no other people visiting this place when I was there. However, it is a well preserved nature that should be visited if you visit New Zealand. It is located at a small town called Putaruru. They called this the pride of Putaruru. There were two alternative routes you can reach to the spring, one is through the side of the normal Tirau to Rotorua/ Taupo highway which you will need to walk for about 2hrs to reach the spring. The other alternative is you drive further down the road into Leslie road to reach another start point of the Te Waihou walkway which you only need to walk for 20minutes to see the spring. wilson blue spring, dougherty county, georgia 2 I just finished an annual work trip where we look at the water levels in selected wells in southeast Alabama, northern panhandle Florida, and southwest Georgia. One of the aquifers we monitor is the Upper Floridan. This spring is a discharge of the Upper Floridan Aquifer along the Flint River in southwest Georgia. In the 1990's the U.S.G.S. continuously monitored this spring including water levels and water quality. For the last three years we visited the spring during our water level run and it was not flowing. It was reduced to a muddy hole filled with river garbage. I am happy to report that water levels in the Upper Floridan Aquifer, at least in this area, are higher and this beautiful spring is again flowing. Hierdurch wurden die Aktionare der Phoenix AG Aktionare der ContiTech AG. 6 Tire RV/Truck Cap Sensor Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) This 6 tire tire pressure monitoring system for truck, trailer or motorhome has a dash-mounting monitor that shows tire pressure and temperature at all times. It alerts users to abnormal tire position as well as low and high tire pressure levels with alarm icons, red light, and an audible warning. The high pressure, high temperature, and per axle low pressure warning levels are user-adjustable. This item supports PSI/Bar and Fahrenheit or Celsius measurement units (user selectable). The light-weighted external cap sensor (.45oz) installing on the tire valve stem is waterproof and its battery is user-replaceable. The monitor has a rechargeable battery and is portable. The sensor signals have long range so therefore mostly it is not necessary for motorhomes and big rig tractors to install a signal booster. HCI developed the TPMS systems in USA by in-house engineers and make all products in its own factories. The driver can safely view the status of every tire at a glance, without having to get out of the vehicle. The PressurePlus TPMS system is perfect for towing since it can be easily upgraded from a 6 wheel system to accommodate up to 38 wheels (Additional valve stem locking sensors and signal relays are sold separately). Installation requires no special tools or reprogramming needed when the tires are rotated. The system is 100 percent programmable for pressure and temperature, and vehicle (truck/trailer) configurations. In the event of a problem, whether the tire is over or under pressure, or too hot, the TPMS display will change from green to red, an alarm will sound, and the monitor will display exactly which tire and what the problem is. PressurePlus 8000 series TPMS system includes one 4 inches LCD display monitor, 1 signal relay (Expandable up to 38 sensors), 6 locking valve stem pressure and temperature sensors, one 12 volt D.C. day 77: forcing myself to the grocery at 10:30 pm Cat food, litter, coffee, what else do I need? Thrill ride out here on the street- West Oakland at night is a bit of a trip. Saturday night is plain old whack. It's 10:30, kind of a calm before the storm. Just up the street is a corner liquor/gedunk store, it's a small family operation, in the evenings a kid works, I think he might be as old as 20. With him comes his buddies who all hang out at the store. Adjacent to the store is a lot, once a parking lot for customers, now a gated lot to park the hoopdies, buckets and bikes. Dude has his own mini car show going on in there. When I moved here I made a point of chatting him up, getting to know him, his little sister, and talking cars with some of his buddies. I figured the more recognizable I was the less likely I'd be a target - I rolled up in my suburban, waving my leave this one alone flag, as well I've stood around talking about motorcycles with the guys, I invite them on rides and tell them about runs all the time. Just a piece up the street, on the other side of a major north south is a group of guys who ride sport bikes, I've rolled past them bunch of times, I know they know where my bike lives as much as I know where theirs are - chicks on bike are cool, my bike is safe. Later tonight I'll hear some drifting at the really wide open intersection in front of the store, makes for a great place to burn rubber. I'll hear drag races, I'll hear the sport bikes pulling tricks, and the Harleys wanking their throttles wide open for the loud ripping echo through this urban lowland. The street culture of man and machine is rich here. I personally love how cars and bikes bring people together in a common ground of pride. There is a Mosque on the corner to my right (stage left) which always has a great energy around it. I love the fellas hanging around after prayers talking cars. For some reason I feel safer when they're around. Across the street from the Mosque is a christian church of some flavor, it seams to be the new building of a growing congregation. It appears to be a welcome addition to the nieghborhood. I really like my neighborhood, I like the mesh of cultures within subcultures, the comingeling of men and the prominence of worship, cars and bling. However, I will hear more than one gun fire tonight followed by helicopters. I have already heard some Ghettobirds going over tonight, it gets dark early these days, the guns come out a little earlier too. I can get on without the bullets though. This peice of street culture I don't understand. My position on weapons is fairly conservative, and comes from hands on usage and military training (and exercise) every time I hear of a kid brandashing or firing, I get all pissed off about how and where they learned by observation that packing is acceptable and even expected. Carrying in street culture comes with an intent I don't accept, an impact I Loath and waves of pain we shouldn't have to dedicate energy to as bystanders and community members. I have no idea what the solutions are - I'd like to belive that active participation in community creates a bubble of protection. I know it's not always true, but I really do want to belive people have good intentions stirring in there hearts. 1968 - International Grand Prix OCIR - Suzuki A100 Another shot from OCIR. As I mention in another photo of this bike, I was following another rider just a corner before the dragstrip straight. He crashed in front of me and I had nowhere to go except over the top of him. I ended up on the ground as well. Ended my day. One of the things we did for the 12 hour race at Willow Springs was to invert the stock handlebars. The rules for production roadracing did not allow "Clip-on" bars. So... what's the difference. The stock bars achieved the same riding position. We also put a ribbed front tire on the rear wheel for less rolling resistance. Did it work? Didn't hurt I guess... 65/365: Truck I am currently "caring" for a Dodge Ram 1500 quadcab Hemi. (5" body lift, mudding tires... the whole thing brings the bottom of the door panel to my waist.) In other words... HUGE truck. To be honest, I hate big trucks. There's nothing more obnoxious than a truck that takes up 4 spaces because the owner is more than likely some 15 year old kid from a farming town out in Daddy's truck for the evening to create havoc among the old people. Especially when that kid is a 20-something year old girl with a quarter tank of gas, a new Steve Earle CD, and very very loud exhaust. Oh yeah... and she can beat the pants off of the old guys in their sport cars right off the light. Now, don't get me wrong. I love my Jeep. I can't afford the big trucks. I can't even really drive them. It took me 20 minutes one Halloween to pull into a parking space at Sonic Drive-In. It took me another 10 to figure out the truck was much too wide for the space and I couldn't reach the button to order food. All-in-all... I drive the truck when I need supplies for renovations. Mostly because it costs more in gas to go to Lowe's and back once than it does to make two trips in the Jeep. A 2x4 fits much more nicely in the bed of a truck than the back of my Liberty, though. Then again, I could probably save a lot of heartache walking the 30 miles back to my house with the lumber on my shoulders than trying to manuver old people who have an obsession with their brakes. Anyway. Yes. I love truck. I'll miss truck when truck is gone. But for now, truck is going to have to stay where it is until gas prices drop a little. International Truck Ventura, California. There was a tire store in San Diego called 4-Day for a while. The big deal was that they were only open 4 days/week, theoretically the most profitable days to keep prices low. e?g ţakka ţe?r ţa? von sem ţu? gafst me?r (I thank you for the hope you gave me) this was my submission for the raleigh flickr group summer project 2008. it didn't hang next to the other photos in the competition, and it didn't get judged with the other photos in the competition. i pulled my photo from the competition because of how disrespectful some of the other competitors had acted prior to the opening night. the rules for this competition were simple. the photo must be taken between aug 1 and sep 1 2008; it cannot be posted to flickr, or published elsewhere; and there was no restriction on subject or use of photoshop or any restrictions as to type of camera, film or digital. anything goes. after the submission of one photo, there was discussion as to whether or not it should hang in the gallery. the image itself was made to be abstract, but ultimately it was a photo of something explicit. some other contestants had concerns about who and if they would invite as their guest(s) for the opening night. i understand that this is a valid concern. it was decided that the image wouldn't hang in the gallery, but would still be in the competition if the artist so wanted. the artist eventually pulled their submission from the contest entirely. this upset me greatly in the fact that possible patrons may be offended by the image took precedence over showing this artist's work. this was started by some other photographers in the competition, who knew full and well the very liberal rules put in place at the beginning. i was disappointed to see that only a small number of people voiced their objection to the offending photo being pulled from the show. i used to think that this group of photographers had principles that they stood up for. whenever there's a story about censorship these people are quick to show support for the artist. when's there's a business that prevents photography they're quick to stop supporting that business and visit other businesses that are photo friendly. but when push comes to shove and they're affected by offending work, they have no problems censoring someone else's work or just ignoring the situation. their main concern was that since this may be the only time they could have the chance to have their work hanging in a gallery, they were entitled to have their work shown without their guests being offended. what they don't understand is that this might be the only time that the offending artist might have their work hanging in a gallery too. through it all, i've come to respect some of my fellow photographers in this group more, but i've also lost a lot, if not all respect for others who participated in the jackassery. this wasn't an easy thing for me to do. i was really looking forward to having my work hanging in a gallery. it was so very hard for me to go to the gallery and see an empty space on the wall where this photo would've hung. luckily i have some great friends that came with to support me. for most of you this may not be a big issue, but since photography is my biggest passion i felt that i needed to stand up for what's right and support this other artist. in no way am i attacking the gallery owner. he worked hard on setting this whole thing up, and was put in a very difficult situation by a small group of people. i respected the owner's decision even though i didn't agree with it. during the brief discussion that we had on the opening night, the owner understood that there might be objectionable material submitted based on some of the contestants previous works. knowing this, the rules regarding content were still put in place. i wanted to wait until i spoke with some people about this before posting, but i couldn't wait any longer. there are so many reason why i love this photo and i'm tired of seeing it just sit in my library any longer. i've tried to make this as anonymous as possible. i don't want to point fingers at anyone. i want people to know that that what happened wasn't right and to hopefully have people make a stand in the future to prevent this from ever happening again. who knows, maybe it's just wishful thinking. Camaro Dale Earnhardt Jr. Concept NASCAR star Dale Jr. is fan of vintage Camaros - he cruises around in a Pro Touring-style '72 Camaro powered by a GM Performance Parts LS crate engine - and the heritage-inspired design of the 2010 Camaro appeals to him like a checkered flag at Daytona. His vision for the car was channeled to GM's designers and crafted in a multi-color combination of style, capability and comfort. They started with a new Camaro SS that uses the standard 6.2L V-8, but modified to use E85. Taking advantage of E85's favorable octane rating, the engine was calibrated to deliver a few extra horsepower, with the exhaust exiting through GM Performance Parts' new headers. It's backed by the SS's available six-speed manual transmission and GM Accessories' short-throw Hurst shifter. Additional performance enhancements include a Brembo brake package and a lowered ride height, giving Dale Jr.'s Camaro a sleeker look to match its road-hugging capability. custom gray-over-white paint scheme blends the high-performance drivetrain with serious style. It is accented with an orange stripe separating the gray and white sections. Also generating attention on the exterior is a set of 21-inch, five-spoke wheels inspired by the Camaro Convertible Concept. They feature dark-painted center sections on the spokes that complement the body's gray color. The wheels are wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero ZR-rated performance tires. Additional exterior details include: * Chevy Accessories grille * Chevy Accessories ground effects and rear diffuser * Chevy Accessories exhaust system * Early Camaro-style "dovetail" rear spoiler * Production high-intensity discharge headlamps * Production RS taillamps Similarly, the interior is outfitted for performance and style, including: * Custom-trimmed leather-and-suede-covered seats with accent stitching * Leather-trimmed steering wheel, shift knob, door armrests and center console lid, with accent stitching * Carbon-fiber treatment on the instrument panel and door panel inserts * Racing-style aluminum pedals * Production-optional four-pack auxiliary gauge cluster * Revised gauge cluster with unique graphics and colors * Custom sill plates Dale Jr. also specified Chevy Accessories' upgraded audio system for the Camaro, which is matched with a Boston Acoustics speaker system, including amps and subwoofers.
