Church in Arequipa From Wikipedia - The Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa ("Basilica Catedral", in Spanish) is located in the "Plaza de Armas" of the city of Arequipa, province of Arequipa, Peru. It is the most important Catholic church of the city and also of the larger Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Arequipa since it is the base of the Archbishop and the Metropolitan Council. The cathedral is also considered one of Peru's most unusual and famous colonial cathedrals since the Spanish conquest. August 15, 1540: This is the date in which the city was founded by Garci Manuel de Carbajal. The Cathedral started construction on this very date. In the "Act of Foundation" of Arequipa, it can be read: "...in the name of its majesty Governor Francisco Pizarro, founded the beautiful village in the valley of Arequipa, in the Collasuyo section, above the river edge, in his name he put the cross, in the location signaled for the Church; He put the pike in the Plaza of the village, which he stated would do in the name of its majesty..." February 14, 1544: The representatives of the Council, Justice and Directorate of the city signed a contract with the architect Pedro Godinez, then regent of the city and commender of San Juan Bautista de Characato, and the carpenters Juan Rodriguez y Gregorio Alvarez to build the church. September hbjbh, 1544: Miguel Cornejo, the Mayor of the City, assigned the building of the portal to the master Toribio de Alcaraz, who agreed to build it using white petrified volcanic lava (sillar). The church is built with 2 main sections. January 22, 1583: An earthquake reduced the church to rubble. 1590: It is decided to rebuild again the main church, and this is assigned to Gaspar Baez, who is helped by several Spanish officials and many hundreds of "Mitayo" Indians. The new design would have 3 sections, arcs and vaults of brick. February 1600: When construction was almost finished, the violent eruption of the Huaynaputina stratovolcano (also known as Quinistaquillas or Omate), together with several earthquakes and a rain of ash, destroyed part of the structure. 1604: Another earthquake completely destroyed what was remaining of the structure. 1609: The Bula of Pope Paul V created the Arequipa Diocese, separating it from the one in Cuzco. The Arequipan Catholics had become impoverished since the Volcano eruption, but decided to rebuild the Cathedral. January 27, 1621: Mr. Andres de Espinoza was assigned the construction of the Cathedral. 1628: Espinoza died. 1656: The construction of the Cathedral was finished. It had 3 sections, 180 feet long by 84 feet wide (84.86 m by 25.6 m), 8 pillars, 5 chapels, 22 arcs, 15 brick vaults. 1666: Earthquake. Some damage, but no structural damage. Reconstruction started immediately. 1668: Earthquake. Some damage, but no structural damage. Reconstruction started immediately. 1687: Earthquake. Some damage, but no structural damage. The fire destroyed several parts of the church and many paintings, sculptures and furniture pieces, as well as several vaults and pillars. December 15, 1844: Reconstruction works started, under the direction of the Bishop Jose Sebastian de Goyeneche y Barreda, and his brother Juan Mariano de Goyeneche. Technical direction was under the architect Lucas Pobrete. A part of it was rebuilt over the old San Juan church (destroyed in 1784) and a 107 m long by 40 m high facade, which exists today, was made. 1850: The Bishop Goyeneche assigned the production of several jewelry pieces to adorn the Cathedral to the Spanish jeweler Francisco de Moratilla, who was then jeweler of the Queen of Spain. The nephews of the Bishop (the count of Guaqui, the duchesses of Goyeneche and Gamio and Jose Sebastian de Goyeneche) gave the Cathedral the main altar (still exists today) which was installed by an Italian architect of last name Guido. 1854: The clock of the tower, made in England, was installed. Also the music organ and twelve giant wood sculptures, all made in Belgium, of the apostles. 1879: The pulpit, made at the shop of Buisine-Rigot in Lille, France, was installed thanks to the Peruvian ambassador in France, Mr. Juan Mariano de Goyeneche, count of Guaqui. It was given to the church by Javiera Lizarraga de Alvarez Comparet. August 13, 1868: A violent and long earthquake destroyed several parts of the Cathedral: The towers, part of the main portal, some of the facade arcs, some altars. In the following years, thanks to the Bishop and the Goyeneche family and under the technical direction of Lucas Pobrete, the two towers and the facade arcs were rebuilt. June 23, 2001: The 2001 southern Peru earthquake measuring 8.1 on the Richter scale on June 23. The left tower was destroyed and the right tower suffered big damage. Aug St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church This church is one of my personal favorites in Milwaukee, especially the interior with its altars and pulpit carved by Erhard Brielmaier. In case you didn't know, Mr. Brielmaier was a Milwaukee-based church furniture builder and sculptor, before becoming one of America's greatest church architects. Day 42/365 2011 So You Think You Want a Bull Terrier? Conga is by nature a late riser, bed hog, completely content to snuggle and snore....until she's not and then watch out. Friday morning she was not. She played ball, ran around jumping and twisting in mid-air and when it looked like I was going to stop playing and go take care of the horses she came running. Now you can't see her powerful motor (hind quarters) but you can see that she is propelling her front end off the ground like she is building up for a leap. They are too comical, this is her way of saying come back and play with ME! The following are excerpts from a thread discussing breed slogans in the English Bull Terrier Group: 1. I converted it to a powered glider, changed out the wingtips (increasing the span to 101", hence the name), and went to tip dihedral instead of poly. Right around 40 oz, I think. This configuration had too much tip dihedral, leading to dutch roll. The wing joints were broken in an accident, and when I repaired it, I cut the dihedral down. Floats very nicely, and a solid (if not exciting) climb with a 3S2000 battery. The Art of Craftsmanship: L'Ebéniste This is part of a photo project - documenting the old arts of craftsmen. This 2nd episode features Joaquim Ferreira, "ebeniste", literally meaning "ebony specialist", which is really a wood worker. These days, Joaquim does more than restore old furniture. From just pieces, he researches what the original "coffre" (chest) would have looked like, and reconstitutes woodwork from scratch using techniques over 200 years old. The glue is heated over an electric stove, the only modern piece of equipment I saw in his "atelier" (studio), composed of a small entrance, a back room, and and L shaped room to the left of the bulb-lit backroom. Water is added to the pot over which the glue stews so as not to catch fire. Plaque (adding a paper thin wood panel to another wood panel of inferior quality) wood doesn't cover a fraction of the modern Ebeniste's work. Joaquim goes to flea markets to find ancient keys, locks, and has a plethora of passes to unlock locks of eclectic complexity. Most pieces of ancient furniture, as royal as they may be, are missing locks, keys, entire panels of woods, hinges. Joaquim manually (with home-made/ancient tools) shapes the old keys to fit the locks. He polishes it all, polishes the metal, adds new wood, to renew Louis XV armoires, or Louis XVI secretaires. He showed me detailed locks and embellishments, unique to each king, stating that every king demanded his own style, which he bought off over the years, so that he can properly restore chests and armoires coming to his shop from all of Burgundy's castles. Indeed, no royal heir could leave his mark in History without creating a new style in decoration and in furniture, Joaquim reminds us. And even if some of the style is echoed in other countries, in later times, the original furniture calls for original locks, true to the original style. The woodwork was mandmade and is still mandmade by a handful of artists like Joaquim, restoring a few owner's heirloom and preserving French history. Ingestre Follies, Staffordshire - Time-Line Close-Up Location: Staffordshire Gross Area: 4000 to 5000 square metres [sqm] An ambitious Heritage Trail, featuring landscaping and an outdoor educational area. We have designed an exciting new Heritage Trail at Ingestre Hall in Staffordshire. Formally home to the Earl of Shrewsbury, this is a magnificent Grade II* listed building. It features part Jacobean, has Nash rear facade and grounds designed by Capability Brown. The Heritage Trail comprises fifteen points of interest. These are situated between installations - called Follies - crafted in the style of traditional English Country House landscaping. Some of the Follies were in the form of furniture and a further few were audio-visual projections situated within the Hall itself. The intention of these sculpted Follies is to bring added activity and interest to the grounds. In turn this will encourage attention to the gardens and maintenance of the existing mounts and overall site. While the concept of sculptured Follies is historic, their appearance here is of a contemporary design with elements responding to the historical context and function. This is especially true in the case of the Observatory Folly. Built as a response to the observatory that Walter Chetwynd used for his astronomical observations. It also pays homage to his friend Sir Christopher Wren, who shared this same interest and was a fellow at the Royal Society. Meanwhile, the Camera Obscura is another very different Folly altogether. It demonstrates a very direct way of engaging with the functions a Folly may offer. In this instance a form is featured that creates a darkened space to see an image of the Hall. Val's Hamburgers - St. Cloud, MN A few years ago, I took advantage of a minivan full of sleeping holiday travelers to explore a few of the back roads of St. Cloud, Minnesota. While I was lost...err...exploring a few of the back roads of St. Cloud, Minnesota, I was hanging a u-turn when my headlights hit a funny looking, tiny house and a sign that had something about Val and hamburgers. It was a total accident, but the memory stuck with me and I had been meaning to get there ever since. Fast forward. Some family recently relocated to St. Cloud and I was able to satisfy my curiosity about the funny little house called Val's. I'm happy to report that it was mindblowingly...hilarious. To set the scene, Val's is one of those 400 square foot 1950s box homes that you wonder how anyone could actually live in. It sits just off the crosshairs of Highway 10 and County 23, a third of the way to just about everyone's cabin up north. It's miniscule. It's hidden. It isn't a hole-in-the-wall so much as you could actually stuff it into the hole in the wall. And it's hopping with customers. When you open the door and go into what you think is going to be a vestibule, you immediately realize that you're pretty much standing right in the middle of the kitchen. "Welcome!" Don't walk in there holding a spatula or you'll be on 'til close and getting an extra W-2 in January. I had heard about the ordering system -- three different touch-screen units where you punch in your worldly desires and five minutes later are handed greasy sacks bulging with food. It's as laughable as people have made it sound. Again, the whole place is barely six feet by four feet, with the magical irony of an ordering system Cray Supercomputers would be proud of. It was slow at the time so one of the two Ridiculously Cute Midwestern Counter Girls offered to punch my order in for me. She must have been bored and/or had me pegged for the rube that I am, and knew that I hadn't been through the NASA-like training program. Oh the disappointment. A triple with bacon, two single cheeseburgers and two fries. No...not for me...for a family of four. Do you remember the airport ticket counter woman from the movie "Meet the Parents"? Similar to that, the Ridiculously Cute Midwestern Counter Girl started keying in my order as though she were tickling out the Mozart Etude No. 11. Dazzled and mystified, all I could mumble was "Holy (expletive deleted)." I had also been forewarned about the generosity of the french fries. "Some will spill into the bag," I was told. Great. I love that when you eat fast food and think you're done, but find a tiny treasure trove of three or four fries at the bottom of the bag. When I got my food back to the minivan and opened it up it looked like the Ore-Ida factory had blown up in my bag. There had to be a half-million french fries in there. I thought I would have to call in a backhoe and crew of union guys to extract my burger which was, in comedic fashion, on the bottom. I've been studying a bit of french language lately. One tip I learned is regarding food and eating and the nuance of talking about it. How do you know when to say "je mange des frites" instead of "je mange les frites" I wonder? Well, I'm told "des" means you're eating fries, but "les" means you're eating all the fries in the world. I think on Saturday, I manged les frites. I digress. All in all, the food is good. The burgers are in the style of McDonald's. Not thin crispy frisbees and not thick, juicy hand-formed patties. In thickness, taste and quality Val's roadside burgers are smack in the middle of the road. The fries are also nearly identical in size and composition to McDonald's. They're thin cut, cooked to crispiness. They had a good dusting of bright orange, khaki pants-killing Lowry's. After a good, solid 45 minutes of eating fries, I had worked my way down towards my burger. All of a sudden I notice that there is actually a little french fry bag in there. What in the name of God is the point of that? I could only surmise this is the restaurant's way of saying, "Here...this is where we really earn our style points." Obviously, the whole experience is them poking fun at themselves. It works. In spades. The four people crammed into the little kitchen were all pleasant to a fault. It's charming enough to make you want to go back, sometimes just to make sure it wasn't some kind of funny dream.
