As I was searching the market for a small, portable ring flash for portraits, I came across the Alien Bee ABR-800 and speedlight attachments such as the Ray Flash and Orbis. The ABR-800, although small, is by no means portable, and the speedlight attachments are clumsy. Finally, I came across the Sunpak 16R Pro ring flash. I saw that there were complaints regarding red-eye, but that is easily correctable, so I took the leap. I was able to increase the efficiency and softness by making a foldable reflector lined with aluminum foil. Coupled with my D700's high ISO capability, I can take full length portraits. The wrap-around lighting is great, and somehow, with the reflector, I'm not getting much red-eye at all. There's even a modeling light, although it drains the batteries. I'm looking for an external battery pack that I can use with this.
