Bicycle Gear1 Sm
Between the Children of Heaven and The Bicycle Thief, I've been watching too many films about fathers and sons and bicycles. This handsome gear was inspired by the gear wheel -- the large central gear on a bicycle.
It is hand carved in fine silver and measures 1 1/8 inches in diameter (2.8 cm) and hangs from a 16" (40.7 cm) rubber cord.
Raleigh RSW 16
Lesser-known brother of the Raleigh Twenty, this vintage machine sports, as its name implies, 16-inch wheels.

The Dewey "bridge" surprise
You can see the "new" bridge over the Colorado River to the left of this photo (just barely), but what oh what happened to the decking of the old Dewey Bridge? We had walked out on it in past visits, but as of April 2011, it doesn't look much like a historic bridge anymore. I hope restoration work is planned.
The sign said: "built in 1916" and "restored in 2000". UPDATE: The bridge was renovated an opened as part of the "Kokopelli Bike Path" in 2000, but on the 6th of April, 2008 a brush fire reached the wooden bridge deck, destroying it completely. I didn't find whether it will get new decking, brought down, or left as is. The 1915 bridge served vehicle traffic until 1986.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
6. Saturday 23rd of April 2011
The weather started to turn, so after checking the forecast at several places we decided that our best route back towards home would be to head for Dinosaur National Monument…just in case the weather improved and a first time trip out the Harper’s Corner Road to the Ruple Trail and the overlook trail at the end of Harper’s Corner - might be a possibility.
We drove to Moab and enjoyed a Mango yogurt smoothie and meal at Denny’s, then drove up the cloud filled canyon of the Colorado River in the direction of Grand Junction, Colorado. We were surprised to see the old 1909 Historic “Dewey Bridge” across the Colorado, without any decking at all, just hanging suspenders. We had often stopped at this old bridge so had no idea it would be without decking. I still haven’t researched the internet to find out the story but I’m hoping it is nothing more than a major restoration project.
We turned north onto highway 139 one of those back highways neither of us had driven before. It turned out to be a gem. In 1993 on a major road trip in our Isuzu Trooper, we had attempted to drive this highway north to south, but it was barricaded closed up by Rangely, leaving us no choice but another route into Western Colorado.
The crossing of the switchback section of highway is impressive, but what was really an unexpected treat were all the rock art panels and the deep history of the Valley Pintado (painted valley). There was so much to see and do along the northern stretch of highway 139 that by the time we reached Dinosaur (near the turn into the Harper’s Corner Road), there was little time left to spend there. Also, the weather was still unsettled and we were alternately getting hit with high winds and rain.
At a rest stop near Vernal a young family in a big four door pickup truck had broken down with a leaking transmission (likely the result of some recent “off roading”). There was nothing we could do to help them (they had already arranged for some mechanical help), but when we offered all the little kids the left over Gatorade, cashews, Pringles potato chips, chocolates, and other backpacking food we had left over, their Dad and Mom readily agreed. The kids took all the backpacking food and drinks and organized an impromptu “picnic” on the lawn of the rest stop. With all their little kids happy and occupied, the parents returned to the task of getting their truck fixed.
We settled into a motel room in Vernal, Utah. Our plan was to get up early the next day and if the weather looked half way good, to retrace our drive to Dinosaur and head up the Harper’s Corner road. We have visited the dinosaur dig of the monument several times and hiked near Split Mountain, so we agreed we would forgo that portion of Dinosaur National Monument, irrespective of the Easter Sunday morning weather.
CEDAR MESA ROAD TRIP 17-26TH APRIL 2011 ~ Mr. & Mrs. Oldmantravels
In all we spent ten days and nine nights on the road, camping in the back of our pickup truck two nights, sleeping in our backpacking tent in Grand Gulch, and the other six nights luxuriating in the comforts of a motel room. Gas prices ranged from a low of $3.56 a gallon to $3.89, which was the highest we paid on this trip. We saw several $4.00 a gallon signs along the way.
Our figure 8 route took us through portions of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, and Nevada. We drove a couple of roads we had never traveled; met some truly wonderful people; took many interesting day hikes to places we had never been, and tried out some new internal frame backpacks on a short backpacking trip into Grand Gulch.
Most of our activity, and time spent, was centered around the Cedar Mesa area of Southeastern Utah. Though the weather forecast did not look favorable for the first portion of our time in Utah, it turned out fine. It wasn’t until the return portion of our road trip, where we ran into several storms (thunder and lightening storms, a nasty hail storm, and a few snow storms thrown in).
If any of you are interested, in for whatever reason on following the travel portion of our road trip, you can connect these dots to form the figure 8 route we traveled, from start to fi
Bike Wednesdsay
Well actually Bike Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday! (Weather permitting!)
This week sees the start of my summer challenge. With the kids now on school holidays I only have to sort myself out in the mornings on the above days and get to work! So with my 2nd Bristol half-marathon coming up in 7 and a bit weeks time I'm keeping fit by cycling the 13 miles (21km) to work.
The goal is to make the journey in less than an hour before we take our summer vacation in August (the same vacation I have been dared to 'look good okay' in a wetsuit!).
I've already taken 5 minutes off my personal best of 1 hour 10 minutes, so hopefully it will be an achievable goal. The only downside is that I've got to try and fit some running in as well otherwise I won't be prepared for the race.
I think beating my half-marathon personal best is going to be a little harder!
Forest area of La Esperanza.
It is situated above 900-1000 meters, in a dashed line with many entrants to farming, a sign that there was population pressure in the area. It spans the western sector of the municipality, following the elevation of the Cordillera Dorsal, fluent and some elements of pine-heath myrtle and laurel in some wetter sites. Here are some of the best examples of historic pine forest on the island, with the beginning of Candelaria pine-La Esperanza in the root zone. It is the true beginning of the interior forest belt of Tenerife. The whole area had limited agricultural harvesting, apart from the very wet and foggy weather, the abundance of recent cones, along with rugged nature of the terrain, made it difficult for crops. The main profitability comes from this area is devoted to eucalyptus plantations, aimed primarily to serve as props for the building (now little used), especially towards the peak of Las Flores.
With a great photographer and friend: Jose Maria (JoseMRV)
Zona forestal de La Esperanza.
Se situa por encima de los 900-1.000 metros, en una linea discontinua con numerosos entrantes para cultivo, signo de la presion demografica que hubo en la zona. Se extiende por el sector occidental del municipio, siguiendo la elevacion de la Cordillera Dorsal, con dominio del pinar y algunos elementos de fayal-brezal y laurisilva en algunos enclaves mas humedos. Aqui se encuentran algunos de los mejores ejemplos de pinar historico de la isla, con el comienzo del pinar de Candelaria-La Esperanza en la zona de Las Raices. Es el verdadero inicio del cinturon forestal del interior de Tenerife. Toda la zona tuvo aprovechamientos agrarios limitados, aparte por el clima muy humedo y brumoso, por la abundancia de conos recientes que, junto con la naturaleza accidentada del terreno, hacian dificil los cultivos. La principal rentabilidad que tiene esta zona proviene de fincas dedicadas a eucaliptos, con la finalidad principalmente de servir de puntales para la construccion (hoy poco utilizados), especialmente hacia la zona del pico de Las Flores.
This quarter's conference finally started to level T-Mobile's cycling sponsorship beyond the usual press/photocall level. Bob Stapleton (founder of Voicestream - now T-Mobile USA- and now manager of the T-Mobile cycling team) came along to give a good presentation on building high performance teams- this included some video from Roger Hammond and Rolf Aldag, as well as a bit of info on how the T-Mobile team is benig rebuilt this year. And yes, we do need a team leader for the major tours..
For light entertainment, Mark and Paul battled it out in a 1km turbo trainer sprint, with Mark coming in first and Paul playing the 'I rode 100 miles yesterday' card.
Um... Shouldn't you be outside?
Ok, so something like this may be good to keep kids on the bike when it's dark and/or rainy outside. But still, do we really need bicycles hooked to a trainer hooked to a video game??? Ugh - another Grumpy Old Man moment I suppose...
MOUNTAIN BIKE DERAILLEURS - MOUNTAIN BIKE
Mountain bike derailleurs - Megahorn bike horn - Mongoose 20 boys bike
Mountain Bike Derailleurs
- A bicycle with a light sturdy frame, broad deep-treaded tires, and multiple gears, originally designed for riding on mountainous terrain
- a bicycle with a sturdy frame and fat tires; originally designed for riding in mountainous country
- (Mountain biking) Mountain biking is a sport which consists of riding bicycles off-road, often over rough terrain, using specially adapted mountain bikes. Mountain bikes share similarities with other bikes, but incorporate features designed to enhance durability and performance in rough terrain.
- (Mountain Biking) A designated, rugged, natural surfaced, single track trail that offers a range of riding opportunities.
- (Derailleur) Gear?shifting mechanism on a bicycle.
- A bicycle mechanism that moves the chain out and up, allowing it to shift to different cogs
- Derailleur gears are a variable-ratio transmission system commonly used on bicycles, consisting of a chain, multiple sprockets of different sizes, and a mechanism to move the chain from one sprocket to another.
- (derailleur) (Say: dee - ray - lure) - Also called a "shifter" or in England, a "mech," a derailleur is a mechanism that literally derails the chain moving it to another cog or chainring. There are rear and front derailleurs. The rear shifts the chain across the cogs.
DriveTrain Upgrade: Rear Derailleur in Pieces
Pretty simple setup for the SRAM X.9 rear derailleur. The bottom sprocket (right) runs on a fairly simple bearing and is held between two machined round plates. This was inexplicably packed with something that seemed to resemble petroleum jelly. I cleaned it out completely, lubed the bearing properly, then sealed the area around the bearing with proper bike lube.
The upper sprocket really doesn't have anything that one would formally call a "bearing" The plastic sprocket rotates on a simple metal hub and are held together between two simple stamped metal plates. I just cleaned it all up, lubed lightly and put it back together.
Drivetrain Upgrade: Dirty Rear Derailleur
While I had the chain off, I took the opportunity to check the state of the derailleur. Generally good, but the sprockets were messy and weren't moving quite as well as I thought they should.
Two simple hex-key screws removed both of the sprockets and their bearings along with the cage guard. Nice and simple which is one of the reasons I like SRAM stuff better than "brand Sh".
man. this was fun.. 40mph going downhill on a road bike. SOLO. this is over bobcat pass which is the east passage out of Red River, NM. I enjoyed the climb as much as the downhill. Would've had more fun but i realized half way up the first side that my handlebars were cracked on the left side. sooooo. i couldnt use my front brake on the way down. B'FUL ride!!!
downhill biking
On a road bike, makes it SO easy to hit 55kmh. This wasn't even much of a downhill, really.
straight outta tha camera, used the onboard flash to freeze up the bike and let the speed take care of the motion blur.
Brighton Eye with a 1901 Kodak Panoram
I've been searching for a Kodak Panoram for a while and finally found one in excellent condition in the US. This is the original model which was made between 1900 and 1901. Yes, thats 110 years old!
This was the first outing, and the camera is leaking some light but I'm very pleased to get an exposure. It uses 120 film, and I've used Kodak T-Max 100. The negative is a whopping 6 x 18 (2 1/2" x 7 3/4")
Suspension Analysis and Computational Geometry
Revealing suspension geometry design methods in unique detail, John Dixon shows how suspension properties such as bump steer, roll steer, bump camber, compliance steer and roll centres are analysed and controlled by the professional engineer. He emphasizes the physical understanding of suspension parameters in three dimensions and methods of their calculation, using examples, programs and discussion of computational problems. The analytical and design approach taken is a combination of qualitative explanation, for physical understanding, with algebraic analysis of linear and non-linear coefficients, and detailed discussion of computer simulations and related programming methods. Includes a detailed and comprehensive history of suspension and steering system design, fully illustrated with a wealth of diagrams Explains suspension characteristics and suspension geometry coefficients, providing a unique and in-depth understanding of suspension design not found elsewhere. Describes how to obtain desired coefficients and the limitations of particular suspension types, with essential information for suspension designers, chassis technicians and anyone else with an interest in suspension characteristics and vehicle dynamics. Discusses the use of computers in suspension geometry analysis, with programming techniques and examples of suspension solution, including advanced discussion of three-dimensional computational geometry applied to suspension design. Explains in detail the direct and iterative solutions of suspension geometry.
Suspension
song - Suspension by Mae
Lately I'm alright
And lately I'm not scared
I've figured out
That what you do to me feels like
I'm floating on air
I don't need to know right now
All I know is I believe
In the very thing that got us here
And now I can't leave
Say anything, but say what you mean
'cause I'm caught in suspension
Now,
I'm wanting this for sure
And I'll beg for nothing more
I'll plan all day and drive all night
You'll love what's in store
I can't seem to stop this now
Even if it's not so clear
And I'll take what I can get
If you want me here (If you want me here)
Say anything, but say what you mean.
When you whisper you want this
Your eyes tell the same
We are gaining speed
I can barely breathe
'cause I'm caught in suspension
It's enough for me to get excited
It's enough for me to feel...woooooah ooooh oh oh oh
Say anything, but say what you mean
When you whisper you want this(when you whisper you want this)
Your eyes tell the same
Say Anything(suspension)
But say what you mean (Oh, please say what you mean)
I'm caught in suspension (suspension)
I'm caught in suspension
Picking up speed (suspension)
I can barely breathe (Oh, I can barely breathe)
I'm caught in suspension
I'm caught in suspension
Say anything (suspension)
But say what you mean (Oh, I can barely breathe)
I'm caught in suspension
the song is about being really pumped about God's love for the first time, and wanting and needing to do everything you can to make a difference for Him.
i love that so much. :-)
Rosko- frame number 1. circa 1997.
After too many years riding the streets of NYC on fragile cycles meant for the velodrome I finally took the plunge. For me this was the answer. I made this frame at UBI in '97. OS Tange Prestige (the REAL stuff), sprint geometry, sloping TT, Cuevas fork, TTT controls and Campy everywhere else. Assembled and ridden that year and every one since the only thing that I have changed is the tires, tape, straps and grease. Happy 12th birthday #1!!
Roll
threw together the new frame, just had to take it for a quick ride. First impressions? it's LIGHT, like really light. Geo is spot on. Gonna run a larger front tire for DJ duty. A few more bits to add but so far it's everything I was shooting for. Stoked.
Year 5~Day 200 +171/365 AND Day 1661: Resting in the Evening
Today I did some de-cluttering and planning for future trips with a couple of different travel clubs. I went to the Fitness Center and worked out with my trainer--4 full rounds, including elliptical and stationary bicycle. Then I went to Publix and bought some fresh fruits/veggies, eggs, and bread. I fixed some steak and vegetables for Jim and me for supper.
I tried to use the 50mm lens on my Nikon D7000 with the self-timer. It was difficult to get the right focus; so, I played with it in iPhoto.
Back in the saddle
Notice my broken wrist....I've been fattening up since it happened and now enough waistline growth and general atrophy...There are workouts and hunger pains in my future....
Road Bike Brake Caliper
- The disc brake or disk brake is a device for slowing or stopping the rotation of a wheel while it is in motion. A brake disc (or rotor in U.S. English) is usually made of cast iron, but may in some cases be made of composites such as reinforced carbon-carbon or ceramic-matrix composites.
- The disc brake component that straddles the rotor and houses the piston(s), cylinder(s) and brake pads. The piston movement pushes the pad against the rotor to slow or stop the vehicle.
- A motorcycle that meets the legal requirements for use on ordinary roads
- (Road biking) Road cycling is the most widespread form of cycling. It takes place primarily on paved surfaces. It includes recreational, racing, and utility cycling.
- A road bicycle is similar to a racing bicycle. However, road bikes are built more for endurance and less for fast bursts of speed, which is desired in a racing bicycle. They usually have more gear combinations and fewer hi-tech racing features.
- A bicycle that is suitable for use on ordinary roads, as opposed to a mountain bike
- A bike with narrow tires best suited for paved roads. Usually noted by drop style bars.
PugHaul (1)
that's a Yakima Boa roof rack fork mount. I had to shim it a good bit to get it to clamp to the BD frame. it's worked well this way with other bikes, but the pugs was kinda heavy for this and i had to stop every so often to tilt it away from the tire or it would rub. i think a better shim is in order (i used rubber 'fender' straps with gorilla tape) or maybe flipping the hitch around so it pivots away from the tire would work.
