Floor Games (Webster's Spanish Thesaurus Edition) Webster's edition of this classic is organized to expose the reader to a maximum number of synonyms and antonyms for difficult and often ambiguous English words that are encountered in other works of literature, conversation, or academic examinations. Extremely rare or idiosyncratic words and expressions are given lower priority in the notes compared to words which are ?difficult, and often encountered? in examinations. Rather than supply a single synonym, many are provided for a variety of meanings, allowing readers to better grasp the ambiguity of the English language, and avoid using the notes as a pure crutch. Having the reader decipher a word's meaning within context serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. Each page covers words not already highlighted on previous pages. If a difficult word is not noted on a page, chances are that it has been highlighted on a previous page. A more complete thesaurus is supplied at the end of the book; synonyms and antonyms are extracted from Webster's Online Dictionary. In this picture, four boys had pantyhose over their hair with tape (sticky-side out) around it, and used there sticky heads to pick up as many gummy-bear off of the floor as they could. It was a simple, and fun game that was great for team bonding. I love being able to help lead a group of teens searching for God. Although this game didn't exactly pertain to the lesson, it brought us closer as brothers and sisters in Christ. And it was tons of fun :) I am thankful for CCC. ***Sorry I have been a slacker at uploading! If you go into the more information section, you can see that I did take them on the proper day! This photo was taken in the late 1970's on front of the old Gillespie Mansion on First Park Ten Blvd at where the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center now stands at 6211 W Ih 10 - San Antonio, TX 78213. For unknown reasons this three (3) story mansion was abandoned and left open. The third floor was a ballroom and there was a marble fireplace in almost every room and an enclosed glass breezeway that went completely around the house! Some called it "The Midget Mansion" because apparently it was built by a midget as evidenced by low door knobs and bathroom fixtures. They say this house become a restaurant for a while and later it was used as a "haunted house". Sadly, this mansion was repeatedly vandalized until it had to be razed. There was even a dumb waiter inside as well as out back tennis courts, a swimming pool complete with pool house and four (4) car garage (not pictured to the right) with even an old car still inside! Too bad the camera used to capture these shots did NOT have a flash or else inside shots would have been shared as well. :-( Ironically there was a much smaller guest house out back (see later aerial photos in this set) which was also abandoned but later would somehow survive and be restored as the Granados Park Community Senior Center. To this day they call the smaller house the Gillespie House but pictured above is the real mccoy. What a pity this much grander structure did NOT survive; what a waste!!!! :-( Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe RY, Texas, Gainesville (3,145) The two story office/combination depot was built in 1902. The building has design elements common to the Mission style such as the curvilinear paraprt peaks of the main gable walls and the curvilinear end gable with the "Santa Fe" cross embeded. The gable roof with curved red-tiled roof surface, and projecting eaves are elements of the Mission style. However, complete brick walls are not commonly associated with the Mission style. Decorative aspects of the structure includes the rough cut stone window lintels, the stone belt marking the watertable around the building, the stone capped curvilinear gables, and parapets, and the second floor, center gable wall with three windows framed in stone with arched transoms. Fabulous Floorcloths Create distinctive floor coverings to match your home's decor Canvas floorcloths are an inexpensive way to add style and beauty to any room in the house. Whether your style is contemporary or Victorian, elegant or whimsical, a custom If you want to create an exciting focal point for a room or disguise a boring floor, a colorful floorcloth may be the solution. Created from heavy canvas and adorned with paint, stencils, stamps, paper decoupage, or fabric applique, a floorcloth can be a simple accent or a work of art. Consult this book for excellent directions on materials, preparation, finishing, and an array of decorative techniques. The 15 step-by-step projects are divided into simple, intermediate, and advanced, so you can jump in at whatever skill level feels comfortable. Greet visitors with a stenciled welcome mat bordered with paper-napkin decoupage, perk up a bedroom with a Victorian lace design made by spray painting over paper doilies to form the delicate pattern, step into a pool of light with a circle of faux stained glass, or bedeck a table with a runner sporting classical Greek figures. The designs are pleasant and the color illustrations adequate; more photos of the finished floorcloths in actual rooms would have been nice to give a better sense of scale and context. But the thorough instructions and smattering of helpful tips make the book worthwhile. --Amy Handy Create distinctive floor coverings to match your home's decor Canvas floorcloths are an inexpensive way to add style and beauty to any room in the house. Whether your style is contemporary or Victorian, elegant or whimsical, a custom (12) UNHCR News Story: Pakistan helping communities that have hosted Afghan refugees A resident of Ferozai Kan village in Balochistan, Pakistan tends to two solar panels which power the area's water supply. UNHCR/ T. Irwin / August 2011 Pakistan helping communities that have hosted Afghan refugees FEROZAI KAN, Pakistan, August 24 (UNHCR) – In a region where sunshine is plentiful but rain is scarce, the use of solar power to pump groundwater is providing an innovative solution for thousands of people living in arid and remote villages in Balochistan in southern Pakistan. Two gleaming solar panels look out of place surrounded by the mud homes that make up the village of Ferozai Kan, around 100 kilometres north-west of the provincial capital, Quetta. Since February, the panels have been powering a pump that carries water from a deep underground well to large plastic containers. The well is the only source of water for Ferozai Kan as well as for several nearby villages and, until the solar pump was completed, retrieving water meant heaving a rope attached to a bucket up from the well floor – over and over again. In the conservative culture of rural Balochistan, the twice daily chore of fetching water is traditionally seen as women's work. The solar project is part of a joint programme between the government of Pakistan and several UN agencies, among them UNHCR, to provide developmental assistance to communities that have hosted Afghan refugees. Projects implemented under the Refugee Affected and Hosting Areas (RAHA) initiative are designed to improve the lives of people living in locations that have been impacted by the 30-year presence of Afghan refugees in Pakistan. By addressing the needs of host communities as well as those of the refugees, the RAHA programme seeks to promote coexistence and social cohesion. "While the RAHA programme engenders goodwill between the local Pakistani communities and Afghans, another key objective is the revival of the environment which was impacted by the presence of Afghan refugees for over three decades," said Jose Belleza, head of the UNHCR office in Quetta. "The creation of sustainable livelihoods and the provision and enhancement of basic services benefit both communities." In Farozai Kan, as elsewhere in Balochistan, RAHA projects have provided both high and low-tech solutions to address communities' needs. As well as installing the solar-powered water pump, UNHCR implementing partner, the Balochistan Rural Support Programme (BRSP), built the village's first pit latrines. In most cases, BRSP looks to beneficiary communities to cover part of the cost of the projects. "If communities have invested in a project, they're more likely to get behind it and see it succeed," said Essa Khan, a regional programme manager for the organization. Involving communities in the maintenance of projects after they've been installed had been a problem in the past, said Khan. In Farozai Kan each household contributes 50 rupees, or about 45 US cents, a month towards the upkeep of the solar pump. "In the beginning we had problems learning the new technology," said Atta Mohammed, a community leader. "But now we are able to train others how to use it." The RAHA initiative was launched in 2009 under the joint One UN programme in Pakistan with an initial appeal of US$140 million over five years. The initiative is expected to benefit up to 2.5 million Pakistanis and Afghans. The programme's interventions cover the sectors of education, health, water, sanitation and hygiene and livelihoods. Since its launch more than 400 projects have been completed and another 100 are under way, mainly in the provinces of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, both home to high concentrations of Afghan refugees. Bibi Mena runs a vocational training centre in Killa Saifullah that teaches women to become tailors. The women make clothes that are sold in local markets and their skills are in increasing demand by residents seeking clothing repairs and alterations. "The women who come here really appreciate the opportunity to learn new skills. Many have started to bring their daughters as well," she said. Under the RAHA initiative, a refugee affected area is one that hosted large numbers of Afghan refugees in the past, but from where the majority of the refugees have left or returned home. A refugee hosting area is a community or area that continues to host some of the 1.7 million Afghan refugees currently living in Pakistan. By Tim Irwin in Ferozai Kan, Pakistan UNHCR News Story: UNHCR encourages Mongolian Parliamentary support for 1951 Convention Executive assistants to members of the Mongolian Parliament huddle over the Parliamentarian Handbook on Refugee Protection as they stake out their negotiating position during a role-playing game at a UNHCR workshop. UNHCR/K. McKinsey UNHCR encourages Mongolian Parliamentary support for 1951 Convention BAYANGOL VALLEY, Mongolia, April 18 (UNHCR) – Laughter rocked a conference centre here as government and UNHCR negotiators faced off last weekend to hammer out an agreement to protect 20,000 refugees who had just fled an uprising and flooded into the country. The scenario, which could have been ripped from the headlines, was only a role-playing exercise at a workshop for 66 executive assistants to the members of the Mongolian Parliament, The Great State Hural. The goal was to familiarize them with the 1951 Refugee Convention, how refugees feel when they flee for their lives, and how UNHCR and countries around the world protect refugees, asylum-seekers and internally displaced people. "This is part of an effort by UNHCR to build alliances in key sectors of Mongolian society to support the government and parliament's intention to accede to the Convention," said Nai Jit Lam, one of the trainers, and senior regional protection officer from UNHCR's Regional Office in Beijing. The workshop, held in this rugged windswept valley 30 km west of the Mongolian capital, Ulanbataar, was covered on prime-time news Saturday evening by two of Mongolia's top TV news channels. Two separate UNHCR workshops earlier last week introduced lecturers from Ulanbataar law schools and officials of Mongolian non-governmental organizations – including human rights groups, and those working against human trafficking and domestic violence – to the 1951 Convention and the UN refugee agency's history. "This would be a particularly auspicious year for Mongolia to accede to the convention, because in 2011 UNHCR is marking the 60th anniversary of the convention," Lam added. "Mongolia would attract considerable international attention and support if it signed in this very special year." The role-playing game – in which the executive assistants had to negotiate under severe time pressure an agreement to handle a mass influx of refugees – dealt with extremely serious issues of balancing refugee protection with national security, very real concerns in Mongolia. The laughter was sparked by outrageous demands and resulting displays of outrage as they pretended to be the National Security Council of fictitious "Government B" and top officials of UNHCR. "The UN just promised money but we wanted national security," the mock president of "Country B" complained as he briefed the whole group on their outcome of negotiations. "The UN did not make any promise of giving money," protested the man playing the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. "We just said we could share some costs." A second group's report on the same exercise turned into an impromptu press conference as participants spontaneously hurled criticism from the floor. "You put your economic interests ahead of your humanitarian obligations," one executive assistant yelled at the second "president" who had made economic aid a condition of helping the refugees. "You want to make slaves of these refugees." "I didn't bring them, they just came," he shrugged. At the Sunday closing session, one participant, Myagmardash Batbayar, confessed: "The day before yesterday if you had asked us, we would probably have said that we would not join the Convention. But because of this training, our minds have changed and we now have a much better understanding of the Convention." To loud applause and cheers from his colleagues, who are mostly in their twenties and thirties, he told the UNHCR trainers: "We should be able to extend our hospitality to refugees and take care of them like their parents." Jacking In To the Matrix Franchise: Cultural Reception and Interpretation Few media franchises can match The Matrix for enthusiasm of reception and subsequent proliferation. Who in 1999 could have imagined that the momentum of a single film would sustain two more major theatrical releases in a single year, a collection of nine anime cartoons, a best-selling computer game, and more websites than can be counted? Jacking In To The Matrix Trilogy will be the first academic study to take an in-depth look at all of these products, a coherent overview of the franchise as a whole. The Matrix films are rich with mythological and religious references, as well as drawing upon futuristic fiction. Such richness demands a variety of decoding interpreting skills, and the array of talent in this volume will lay bare many of the strand that have given the Matrix creations such a sense of magic. The book gathers original articles that comment on the cultural and religious implications of The Matrix trilogy, its place within the cyberworlds of contemporary literature and philosophy, and its portrayal of gender and race. The volume also makes conjectures about the ethical and social consequences of taking either the red of the blue pill. (6) IMG 1661 Trillium - Rock City State Forest - Rock City State Forest comprises 6,015 acres of forest land north of the City of Salamanca in Cattaraugus County, NY. To the north the site borders the Holimont and Holiday Valley Ski Areas, south of Ellicottville. Natural History Interest Stands of pine and spruce, which need direct sunlight to thrive, were planted in farm fields here during the 1930’s. They have since been managed by a series of thinnings to encourage the growth of native hardwood seedlings and a final harvest to allow the hardwoods to grow to maturity. Stands of hardwood forest at Rock City include Black Cherry, Yellow Birch, Sugar Maple, White Ash, Northern Red Oak, and White Oak. Most of the very large oak, ash and cherry trees are less than 100 years old. These fast-growing trees are harvested for high-quality wood for furniture. As you enter Rock City State Forest, either from Little Valley to the west or Great Valley to the east, you go from a glacial sediment-filled valley up onto a ridge that was above the reach of the glacier. Soils here are termed “residual,” meaning that they are composed of “parent” material derived from the underlying bedrock, rather than from glacially deposited material. Therefore these ridge-top soils are millions of years old, as opposed to the newer 15,000 year-old soils in the surrounding valleys. Much of the forest lies at elevations exceeding 2,000 feet, providing a cool, moist habitat for Striped Maple or Moosewood, an unusual forest tree in our region. The wooded highlands here are inhabited by a variety of vireos and warblers including Blue-headed and Red-eyed Vireo, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, Ovenbird, American Redstart, Hooded Warbler, and Blackburnian Warbler. Ruffed Grouse, Hermit Thrush, Veery, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Brown Creeper, and Winter Wren are among other birds that breed here. Raptors include Red-tailed Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk, Northern Goshawk, and Sharp-shinned Hawk. Common Raven have been seen as well. The highlight of a trip to Rock City State Forest is Little Rock City, a natural outcrop of conglomerate rock in the unglaciated plateau. House-sized blocks of conglomerate jut out from the edge of the plateau and lie scattered down-slope amid the trees. It is a treat to explore the area during the summer as the alleys and passageways between rocks are cool and shady. Rocks are covered with a host of lower plants including mosses, lichens, and ferns, including Common Polypody in abundance. On the forest floor around the rocks are colonies of Stiff Clubmoss. The early spring visitor may find blossoming Trailing Arbutus. Clintonia is very common and forms a dense groundcover in many places. Common Wood-sorrel, with its pink and white candy-striped blossoms, is also abundant. Blossoming Round-leaved Orchis welcomes the observant visitor in July, around the same time that ghostly white Indian Pipes are poking through the duff. Hobblebush, so called because of how it would trip up a horse walking through it, grows in low thickets among rocks scattered over the forest floor. Other Notes The area was the site of many projects carried out by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). CCC Camp Seneca operated in the area from 1935 to 1941. Corpsmen constructed roads, trails, and fire lanes, and planted hundreds of thousands of trees, including experimental plantations of walnut, Black Cherry, Tuliptree, oak, pine, and Norway Spruce. The stone-lined walkways to the barracks are still visible and a few have been restored. Norway Spruce seedlings planted along the walkways are over 60 years old now. Today Camp Seneca is an attractive recreational site with picnic tables and a hiking trail through hardwood forests and spruce and pine plantations. A pavilion with four tables, additional tables, and other improvements have been made. A loop hiking trail that starts and ends at Camp Seneca, and a trail also connects Camp Seneca and Little Rock City. At Little Rock City there is a nature trail that loops through some of the more impressive rocks. There is a turn around and parking area, along with four single table picnic/camping sites with concrete slabs, and pavilion-type covers. There is currently a satellite-type outhouse. Several hiking and bike trails access the forest, which in turn intersect public and forest roads. In addition to the DEC-maintained trails, a portion of the Finger Lakes Trail/North Country Scenic Trail passes through the site. Tu IMG 1579 Tent Caterpillar - Rock City State Forest - Rock City State Forest comprises 6,015 acres of forest land north of the City of Salamanca in Cattaraugus County, NY. OXO SteeL Pie Server Rarely have elegance, durability and comfort been combined to such a degree when it comes to kitchen tools. The brushed stainless steel handle is strong and built to last while the trademark flexible fins make using this server a pleasure. A flexible steel head with serration on both sides will make cutting and serving pies, quiches and more, nice and easy. This pie server is elegant yet efficient, acting as a slicer and server. With sharp, serrated edges on the sides, use this tool to slice up dessert and then deliver it to a plate. The strong, yet flexible, stainless steel head can easily glide under pie crusts, yet won't bend, even with hefty servings. The large, comfortable handle is brushed stainless steel with rubber fins for comfort and will remain cool to the touch. It's also nonslip under wet or dry conditions. And the large hanging hole in the handle makes storage easy. Like all Oxo products, this tool is dishwasher-safe. --Laurie Notaro (11) Quizilla Servers Before Sale The server stack for Quizilla at the time of the sale. Operations were moved from these machines to LA 2 months later. Except for two, these servers are all hand-built by me. Note the glowing fans. (edit: photo was taken May 2005) Server Rack in the Laundry Room I needed a place to put servers and other computers in my house, so this is in the laundry room. The washer and dryer are stacked to the left of this picture (a great space saver!) killing floor no servers Featuring a stainless steel head and a soft, tapered handle. Serrated on both sides for easy cutting for left or right hand. Dishwasher safe. Angled to fit a pie plate's sloped sides, thin and flexible enough to slip under a pie wedge without breaking the crust, this tool plates a piece of pie without spilling the cherries. Its shape makes it ideal for quiche and other wedge-shaped baked goods, and for turnovers and other pastries that are too hot to be lifted by hand. The blade has serrated edges for cutting wedges without relying on a knife. Oxo regularly wins design awards for its Good Grips utensils with their familiar black, processed-rubber handles that offer control wet or dry. Because this tool is meant to be used gently, its handle does not have Oxo's characteristic "fins," or side grooves, that flex under pressure. Nor is it oversized like most Good Grips handles. Instead, it tapers toward the end to fit snugly into your palm. --Fred Brack Related topics: one flooring concrete flooring contractors laminate floor heating flooring south london weather tek floor mats industrial flooring tiles glueless laminate flooring |

1860 Antique Engraving Renaissance Palaces Floor Plans Rome Architecture - Original Copper Engraving This is an original 1860 engraving of several Renaissance building floor plans including: Palazzo Gentili; Palazzo d'Aste; and Palazzo Strozzi, by architect Paul Letarouilly. Of the over 300 different original engravings we have obtained by architect Letarouilly, only a few contain his personal blind emboss markings, still intact. It is likely that very few of these exist in the world (and more likely that none are available for purchase). This engraving DOES have the rare blind emboss, from 1856, with his name, and it is not visible in the digital picture. In addition, only those with the blind emboss were created on this slightly more desirable, hand-modeled stock. Simply stunning. Period Paper is pleased to offer an exceptional collection of original first impression engravings of the architectural masterpieces of Renaissance Rome. This collection, which dates from 1860, is the result of thirty-five years of meticulous work by French architect Paul Letarouilly. This is a rare collection, and all of the engravings are in very good condition considering their age. Each engraving has the original plate impression although it is not visible on our digital image. Please note that due to the large format of these engravings, they will be shipped rolled in a museum-quality shipping tube. (8) Marble Palace. Saint-Petersburg. Marble Palace or Mramornyi Dvorets was one of the first Neoclassical palaces in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It is situated between the Field of Mars and Palace Quay, slightly to the east from Winter Palace. The palace was built by Count Grigory Orlov, the favorite of Empress Catherine the Great and the most powerful Russian nobleman of the 1760s. Construction started in 1768 to designs by Antonio Rinaldi, who previously had helped decorate the grand palace at Caserta near Naples. The combination of sumptuous ornamentation with rigorously classicizing monumentality, as practiced by Rinaldi, may be attributed to his earlier work under Luigi Vanvitelli in Italy. The palace takes its name from its opulent decoration in a wide variety of polychrome marbles. A rough-grained Finnish granite on the ground floor is in subtle contrast to polished pink Karelian marble of the pilasters and white Urals marble of capitals and festoons. Panels of veined bluish gray Urals marble separate the floors, while Tallinn dolomite was employed for ornamental urns. In all, 32 disparate shades of marble were used to decorate the palace. The plan of the edifice is trapezoidal: each of its four facades, though strictly symmetrical, has a different design. One of the facades conceals a recessed courtyard, where an armored car employed by Lenin during the October Revolution used to be mounted on display between 1937 and 1992. Nowadays, the court is dominated by a sturdy equestrian statue of Alexander III of Russia, the most famous work of sculptor Paolo Troubetzkoy; formerly it graced a square before the Moscow Railway Station. Fedot Shubin, Mikhail Kozlovsky, Stefano Torelli and other Russian and foreign craftsmen decorated the interior with inlaid coloured marbles, stucco, and statuary until 1785, by which time Count Orlov fell out of favour with the Empress, who had the palace purchased for her own heirs. In 1797–1798 the structure was leased to Stanislaw August Poniatowski, the last king of Poland. Thereafter the palace belonged to Grand Duke Constantine Pavlovich and his heirs from the Konstantinovichi branch of the Romanov family. In 1843, Grand Duke Constantine Nikolayevich decided to redecorate the edifice, renaming it Constantine Palace and engaging Alexander Brullov as the architect. An adjacent church and other outbuildings were completely rebuilt, while the interior of the palace was refurbished in keeping with the eclectic tastes of its new owner. Only the main staircase and the Marble Hall survived that refacing and still retain the refined stucco work and elaborate marble pattern of Rinaldi's original decor. During the Soviet era, the palace successively housed the Ministry of Labour (1917–19), the Academy of Material Culture (1919–36), and the Lenin Museum (1937–91). Currently, the palace accommodates permanent exhibitions of the Russian State Museum, notably "Foreign Artists in Russia (18th and 19th centuries)" and the "Peter Ludwig Museum at the Russian Museum", featuring canvases by Andy Warhol and other Pop Art idols. Palace Arches This is the Diwan-I-Khas which was a private audience hall of the Maharajas, a marble floored chamber. It is located between the armoury and the art gallery. It's part of the City Palace Jaipur. City Palace, Jaipur, which includes the Chandra Mahal and Mubarak Mahal palaces and other buildings, is a palace complex in Jaipur city, the capital of the Rajasthan state, India. It was the seat of the Maharaja of Jaipur, the head of the Kachwaha Rajput clan. The Chandra Mahal palace now houses a museum but the greatest part of it is still a royal residence. The palace complex, which is located northeast of the centre of the grid patterned Jaipur city, incorporates an impressive and vast array of courtyards, gardens and buildings. The palace was built between 1729 and 1732, initially by Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amber. He planned and built the outer walls, and later additions were made by successive rulers right up to the 20th century. The credit for the urban layout of the city and its structures is attributed to two architects namely, Vidyadar Bhattacharya, the chief architect in the royal court and Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob, apart from the Sawai himself who was a keen architectural enthusiast. The architects achieved a fusion of the Shilpa shastra of Indian architecture with Rajput, Mughal and European styles of architecture. The history of the city palace is closely linked with the history of Jaipur city and its rulers, starting with Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II who ruled from 1699-1744. He is credited with initiating construction of the city complex by building the outer wall of the complex spreading over many acres. Initially, he ruled from his capital at Amber, which lies at a distance of 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) from Jaipur. He shifted his capital from Amber to Jaipur in 1727 because of an increase in population and increasing water shortage. He planned Jaipur city in six blocks separated by broad avenues, on the classical basis of principals of Vastushastra and other similar classical treatise under the architectural guidance of Vidyadar Bhattacharya, a man who was initially an accounts-clerk in the Amber treasury and later promoted to the office of Chief Architect by the King. palace floor plans 1856: Guillaume, "Un Palais d'Ambassade Fran?aise ? Constantinople." (Floor Plan) This is an original, circa 1902, print of an architectural drawing of the 1856 Grand Prix de Rome d'Architecture. This print is part of a collection of prints of architectural drawings from the Prix de Rome from 1850-1900. Created in 1663, the Prix de Rome was a prestigious scholarship for art students in which the winners could attend the Acad?mie de France in Rome. Many famous artists, architects, and sculptors competed for this coveted prize. Overall, this collection is in excellent condition and any print would look fabulous framed. (17) Nightclub Style Wedding This couple wanted a nightclub style vibe for the second half of their wedding reception, and I really wanted to capture that with this photo. I went up on a balcony overlooking the dance floor, which was suspended above their pool in a backyard. I had the couple stand still and look at me, while my assistant held a lightstand with a bare Vivitar 283 up high pointed to isolate just them on the dance floor. I seem to remember it was turned way down to around 1/32 power. The DJ helped us out by letting the crowd know what I was trying to do, and encouraging them to 'swirl' around the couple. I dragged the shutter, and covered myself with about 10 frames of this scene - this one had them sharpest and had the best crowd movement. I added a bit of saturation and radial blur to the crowd in post. jerryfergusonphotography.com Surf Club Postcard I bought in Ottawa. The back reads: "SURF CLUB, Virginia Beach, Va. Davison House, 690 Park Avenue, Upper East Side, Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States This house is a part of that outstanding group of neo-Federal townhouses which extends along the west side of Park Avenue, between East 68th and 69th Streets, sometimes referred to as the 'Pyne-Davison Blockfront" due to the uniform architectural quality of these houses. The present Consulate General of Italy was designed by the architectural firm of Walker & Gillette. It was built in 1916-17 as the residence of Henry Pomeroy Davison. This splendid residence is the northern terminus of the beautiful group of neo-FederaI townhouses alone the west side of Park Avenue. Like the other-houses in the block, this house has a rusticated limestone first story. :he red brickwork above is, like that of its neighbors, laid in Flemish bond and its cornice carefully aligned with theirs. The details of its stonework, however, and most particularly, the elaboration of its main entrance doorway, give it special distinction. The elaborate central entrance on Park Avenue is flanked by low windows in the rusticated stone base. The second floor has three handsomely framed floor-length casement windows. The third and fourth floors have four conventional height double-hung windows; those at the third floor are capped by flat arches of brick with stone keystones. The main entrance is flanked by a pair of freestanding Ionic columns, each with its own block entablature connected above by a segmental-arch pediment with broken lower chord. The doorway itself, reminiscent of Georgian prototypes, is set in a molded store archway crowned by a large double keystone. It enframes a pair of heavy wood doors painted black and surmounted by an arched glass fanlight. Rising directly from the top of the rusticated base, the high second-floor casement windows have elaborately detailed stone enframements. The center window is pedimented with supporting scrolls at either side. The cornices of the flanking windows are crowned by unusual bronze motifs consisting of sphinxes guarding a central urn. A limestone band-course separates the fourth story from the fleers below and incorporates the fourth floor window sills. A simple cornice, with balustered parapet above, is the crowning feature of the facade. An attic story, with low copper roof, is hidden behind the parapet. The 69th Street end of this house corresponds, architecturally, to the main front on Park Avenue. To the south of the main front on Park Avenue, a one-storied garage interrupts the I im.estone base with a pair of wide wood doors painted black. The wrought iron fence, that runs 3long the Park Avenue side, emphasizes the entrance to the garage with an exceptionally fine lantern supported. at the top of a wrought iron archway. Henry Pomeroy Davison (1867-1922) was one of the founders of the Bankers Trust Company and a partner of J. P. Morgan. He directed the United Stares Red Cross curing World War I and, in 1917, organized and administered the relief missions of a special War Council appointed by President Wilson. He later conceived the idea of the 'World Federation of Red Cross Societies and, in 1919, launched the League of Red Cross Societies with headquarters in Geneva. His house, at No. 690 Park Avenue continued, for some time after Mr. 'Davison's death, to be used as a residence. Marshall Field, Anson W.
