On 01st August 1927, an uprising at Nanchang in east China's Jiangxi Province marked the beginning of the independent leadership of the army by the Communist Party of China (CPC). After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the government set August 01 as Army Day. This is to mark the National Day of China - 58th anniversary of founding of the People’s Republic of China - that falls on 01st October 2007. China will be entering its 30th year since the CPC embarked upon a strategy to shift the focus of the Party to socialist modernisation and policy of reforms and opening up in December 1978. Chinese people have since then made significant achievements in all spheres of human activity. China has seen continuous advancement in its national economic strength, defence capability and the cohesiveness of the whole Chinese nation. The ethical civilization and the building of democracy and legal system as well as other social undertakings have obtained enormous achievements. The Chinese people should be very proud to note that China’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) now ranks fourth in the world, while its total import and export volume breaks US$ 1trillion, reaching US$ $1758 billion, lifting China to the fifth place in world trade. The outputs of steel, coal, cement, chemical fertilizer, TV-set, meat, cotton, fruit and vegetable, etc. jumped to the first throughout the world. People’s living standards have been significantly improved, and China has marched onto a new historical development stage of building a well-off society in a comprehensive manner. China and Sri Lanka have worked closely together in the international field making an impact on world developments. At the historic “Bandung Conference” convened in Indonesia in 1955, China and Sri Lanka worked together with other Asian and African nations giving direction and cohesion to the Third World. Then Premier and Foreign Minister Zhou Enlai led the Chinese delegation to the Conference and his speech won widespread acclaim among the delegates of the participating countries. During the Conference, the Chinese delegation advocated the principle of seeking common ground while putting aside difference, which not only won the support of overwhelming number of delegates but also laid the ground for the success of the Conference. China and Sri Lanka had a long-standing relationship, which dated back to the fifth century. As early as over 1500 years ago, Fa-Hsien, an eminent Chinese monk had paid a study visit to our country and wrote a book entitled “A Record of Buddhist Kingdoms” (394-414CE), from which the Chinese people came to know about Sri Lanka. People’s Republic of China and Sri Lanka have had accorded each other diplomatic recognition in January 1950. Since our country established full diplomatic relations with People’s Republic of China on 07th February 1957, China and Sri Lanka have developed equal, mutually beneficial and friendly-cooperative relations on the basis of the five principles of peaceful coexistence, which serve the fundamental interests of the peoples of the two countries. Whenever Sri Lanka was in crisis, China has come to our assistance. So we consider China a very strong friend of ours. Both our countries have been cooperating in multilateral forums on various bilateral and international issues. Sri Lanka while consistently supporting moves at the United Nations (UN) to restore the right of People’s Republic of China to occupy the seat of ‘China’ at the UN, it has expressed unwavering support for the People’s Republic of China's "One China" policy, and look forward to with confidence that differences will be solved through negotiations and dialogue. In 1996, Sri Lanka welcomed the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong to the People’s Republic of China. Sri Lanka has also extended its support for China on issues including Tibet, human rights and entry of World Trade Organization (WTrO). It is a matter of great satisfaction to us that China and Sri Lanka have enjoyed healthy and smooth development of relations over the past 50 years. I am confident that the friendship between China and Sri Lanka cannot be shaken; the existing ties of friendship would grow from strength to strength as well as with the efforts of the two sides, China and Sri Lanka would have broader and brighter prospects of cooperation in this new century. And I am hopeful that with China being an economic powerhouse in the world, they would play a positive and dynamic role in the development of the Sri Lankan economy in the fields of industry, tourism and investment promotion. China and Sri Lanka has been enjoying not only lasting friendship for generations but also a long history of bilateral trade. The haze of midday, yes; the cool rush of an evening sunset, yes; the bright flicker of sunrise licking at the most distant waves, and gradually working its way into a foreground, no. But the few coastal sunrises I have seen have been exactly like that: the sun rising from some point behind, beyond the Coastal Range, and just glinting off the horizon where sea and sky meet. And, as the light climbs higher, finally flooding the sandy beach with a golden glow. I am more of a morning person than I like to admit. Usually I have no problem lying in a cozy bed and reading until almost noon. But when I am up to see the sky turn from black to blue to pink, the resulting day seems so much more... entire to me. As though I own some small part of it, as though the pieces of life's puzzle fit just a little closer together. There is a fiercer rush in my veins during sunrise than sunset; I am a bit more alive during such times. Rambling aside, this was taken at Nekowin Beach. I remember getting knee-high wet about four separate times. I suppose that is a drawback to sunrise at the beach: after getting your shoes wet, they tend to stay wet. All. Day. Long. But it's worth it. Taken with a Hasselblad. Not mine, of course, though my own Hasselblad fund is progressing slowly and steadily. FOSTER ANNOUNCES Ł5MILLION FUND FOR 2012 YEAR OF OPPORTUNITY Tourism Minister Arlene Foster has launched a ?5million fund for a programme of events to promote Northern Ireland tourism in 2012, at an event in Belfast today. The ?5million funding package comes from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB). Tourism Minister Arlene Foster is pictured at the launch with Alan Clarke, NITB Launching NI2012 at Titanic House in Belfast, Arlene Foster said: “2012 will be a year of opportunity for Northern Ireland. The eyes of the world will be on Northern Ireland, which is why I reallocated ?3.5million from my department’s budget settlement to the Northern Ireland Tourist Board to prioritise the promotion of tourism during this significant year. “2012 presents a unique opportunity to deliver a year-long celebration of Northern Ireland. Many significant events lie ahead such as the centenary of the maiden voyage of Titanic in April 2012, the 50th Ulster Bank Belfast Festival at Queens and the arrival of the Clipper Round the World Yacht race to Londonderry. The maiden city will also be preparing to take up the mantle of UK City of Culture 2013. “By 2012 we will also have completed an investment of ?300million in capital infrastructure, including the Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre and the Titanic Signature Project.” The events programme for 2012 and beyond is expected to boost visitor numbers and, in turn, bring significant economic benefits to Northern Ireland. Arlene Foster said: “2012 is just the start – it is a significant tipping point for Northern Ireland tourism and will help to increase visitor numbers and stimulate economic growth. “We have identified a number of benefits over the next three years from staging this programme of events, including attracting up to 833,000 additional visitors, generating an additional ?140million in revenue for the economy and the potential to create over 3,500 jobs.” Kennedy Wilson acquires BoI REIM in Ł1.4bn sale US firm Kennedy Wilson today announced the acquisition of Bank of Ireland’s Real Estate Investment Management (BoI REIM). The deal will be Kennedy Wilson’s first Irish and European business acquisition and will add EUR 1.6 billion of real estate assets to the company. The acquisition will see the establishment of Kennedy Wilson Europe , which will be carried out in conjunction with BoI REIM’s senior management. Sgt. 1st Class Dremiel Byers earned a berth in the World Championships for the eighth time by defeating WCAP teammate Spc. Timothy Taylor in two straight matches during the best-of-three finals for the 120-kilogram/264.5-pound Greco-Roman crown. Spc. Justin Lester made the national team for the fifth time with a two-match victory over WCAP teammate Staff Sgt. Glenn Garrison in the 66-kilogram/145.5-pound Greco-Roman division. Spc. Spenser Mango earned his third trip to the World Championships by defeating Minnesota Storm’s Paul Tellgren in two matches for the 55-kilogram/121-pound Greco title. Those three Soldiers will represent the Army on Team USA at the 2011 FILA Wrestling World Championships, scheduled for Sept. 12-18 in Istanbul, Turkey. Byers, 36, a native of Kings Mountain, N.C., is the lone U.S. Greco-Roman wrestler who has won gold, silver and bronze medals at the World Championships. “I just want to make sure I get the medals that nobody said I could get, and especially the one I promised my grandfather,” said Byers, who vowed to win an Olympic medal for his late grandfather, Theodore Byers, before he died. “Chase the medals, and the right one will come. That’s our philosophy with the Olympics.” Olympic gold is the driving force behind Byers’ eighth appearance in the World Championships on the long road to London for the 2012 Olympic Games. “Maybe it’s the stage,” he explained of the difference between a World and Olympic medal. “I’ve got my promise coating that medal, and the fact that the world is watching. It’s the one that has eluded me. I want to win a Grand Prix, I want to wrestle in Iran one time, and I want an Olympic gold medal – not necessarily in that order.” Byers said he derives inspiration from younger Soldiers in the WCAP wrestling room to help him keep reinventing his game. “I’ve been doing a little bit more on my feet and just getting more aggressive in parterre – going back to the basics of things that truly work, not holding back on either side and not waiting for a perfect lock – just firing,” Byers said. “You might even see some throws this year. It might be those young puppies in the room because they’re eager, and it carries over. “I’m just fortunate to be a part of this program,” Byers added. “This program is a blessing in my life. To train and represent the United States Army on this level in this sport while the world is watching, I could never be happier.” Although he’s already entertaining the idea of coaching, Byers refused to call this his final U.S. World Team. “It’s a long road and I’ve enjoyed the scenery along the way. I’m having a lot of fun with these young guys on the team. They’ve sparked new life in me, I guess,” Byers said. “You never know. If they drag me kicking and screaming into the pasture, I guess I’ll have to go, but they’re going to have to push me first.” Lester, 27, who won bronze medals at the 2006 and 2007 World Championships, took a year off from wrestling after competing at the 2009 Worlds. He returned to competition as a member of the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program. “I feel good, but I still feel like a step behind where I used to be,” Lester said after defeating 37-year-old Garrison. “I don’t know if that’s just taking that year off, being off the mat, or maybe age is starting to catch up because I have an explosive style. But I still feel like I can wrestle and feel like I can win a gold medal, so I feel good going into the World Championships.” Lester can’t get over the patience and dedication of five-time U.S. World Team Trials runner-up Garrison. “Glenn is a great teammate,” Lester said. “I’ve had very few teammates like him in my whole wrestling career. The Third Class seats are the closest wooden benchs - you can see the leather First Class seats just past the partition! From Wikipedia; The Castlederg and Victoria Bridge Tramway was a narrow gauge railway (with a track gauge of 3 feet or 914 mm), operating in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It opened in 1883 and closed in 1933. This 7.25 mile long line was situated entirely within County Tyrone, linking the market town of Castlederg through Spamount, Crew and Fyfin to Victoria Bridge (a junction with the main line of the Great Northern Railway (Ireland)). The line followed the course of the road for almost its entire length and there were no passing loops. The Great Northern Railway (Ireland) reached Victoria Bridge in 1852. Plans for a narrow gauge rail link to Castlederg were agreed at a public meeting held in the town in August 1881. The line was constructed shortly prior to the enactment of the Tramways Act 1883, and opened in April 1883, so the promoters lost out on any financial assistance from the government. Because of a sharp gradient on the approach to Victoria Bridge, all trains had to be equipped with a Westinghouse continuous braking system - the first trains in Ireland to be so equipped. The line's first two steam locomotives were fitted with enclosed bodywork as tram engines. Throughout its operation, the line was normally served by three return workings every day (except Sundays), with an additional service on Fridays and Castlederg Fair days. It started with three Kitson tramway type 0-4-0Ts locomotives, but these were all gone by 1912. A 24 seat railcar was built with a Fordson paraffin engine in 1925 at Castlederg. Although basic in design, it was capable of being driven from either end and the driver also sold the tickets. From 1925 the Tramway became loss making, reaching virtual insolvency by 1932. A strike disrupted Northern Ireland's rail network between 31 January and 7 April 1933. This was taken as an opportunity to discontinue services. The last steam engine departed from Castlederg on 27 July 1934 hauling redundant rolling stock to Victoria Bridge for auction. The need for transhipment of all freight between the 3' (914 mm) gauge Tramway and the 5' 3" (1600 mm) gauge Great Northern Railway at Victoria Bridge was time-consuming, inefficient and expensive. By the 1930s the railway's Victorian-era infrastructure was also in need of substantial investment. The line became one of Northern Ireland's earliest casualties of road competition. Wood frame was built from the old, warped wood sitting in the apartment complex backyard. 1/2 inch pvc sitting on top is where the ir beam sensor sits, as well as the eye dropper. White shower curtain occasionally acts as diffuser. Black shelf is the base for the crown shots. Shelf to the left holds the stopshot. Vivitar flashes are set up behind the curtain. Extra 1/2 pvc sitting to the right (can never have enough of that).
