The Beacon

The Beacon

Going to the hockey game tonight, have the night off, and I'm going to party on a Saturday night like it's 1999 with my best friend Sean.

This started out as a 1 second exposure stopped down to f/22, and I used my bright-ass bike LED light to light my face. Then I started getting creative and lengthening the exposure time to 5 seconds while doing some light-writing. Finally, added all the color bursts in post. I love it. You can see the horizontal line reflected across my eyes.

I love light. Gotta catch it all!

Gen Led MKII

Gen Led MKII

Currently testing 2nd generation of home made LED generator light. Using Cree XRE Q5 with 8 degree optic.

As an update now that I've used this for awhile, it is very bright. I've had people on 3 occaisions go out of their way to remark to me how noticeable I was and that they were surprised I was a bicycle. I've tuned the angle up a bit higher, and although it isn't the best optic for throw, it is a nice amount of light to the sides which is good for commuting. MKIII parts are almost collected, will have 3 Leds with voltage doubler / speed sensor circuit.

2006 Opus Piccolo

2006 Opus Piccolo

I'm seriously thinking about selling my racing bike. It's a great bike for someone learning to competitively, and I'd still be on it if I were riding seriously. But times change, and I'm using the old steel beast more often, and this beauty hardly sees the light of day.

BTW: Yes, it's upside down. It's hanging in my garage. It's been well maintained and stored indoors at all times.

Frame Size: 54cm.
Includes: everything in the picture (frame, wheels, brakes, all the basics) including the arm rests and the streamlined water system (awesome for long rides), but not the pedals or the helmet. Standard pedals can be included. The seat might also be swapped for the standard seat (which is lighter).

Making Good: How Ex-Convicts Reform and Rebuild Their Lives

Making Good: How Ex-Convicts Reform and Rebuild Their Lives

Can hardened criminals really reform? Making Good provides resounding proof that the answer is yes. This book provides a fascinating narrative analysis of the lives of repeat offenders who, by all statistical measures, should have continued on the criminal path but instead have created lives of productivity and purpose. This examination of the phenomenology of "making good" includes an encyclopedic review of the literature on personal reform as well as a practical guide to the use of narratives in offender counseling and rehabilitation. The author's research shows that criminals who desist from crime have constructed powerful narratives that aided them in making sense of their pasts, finding fulfillment in productive behaviors, and feeling in control of their future. Borrowing from the field of narrative psychology, Maruna argues that to truly understand offenders, we must understand the stories that they tell-and that in turn this story-making process has the capacity to transform lives. Making Good challenges some of the cherished assumptions of various therapy models for offenders and supports new paradigms for offender rehabilitation. This groundbreaking book is a must read for criminologists, forensic psychologists, lawyers, rehabilitation counselors, or anyone interested in the generative process of change.

'07 Michigander tour, I couldn't ride the Cyclo-cross bike I was building for this ride because I broke my collarbone less than 6 weeks before the ride. Riding an upright for 45 - 65 miles/day was out of the question so I rebuilt one of my Trek R-200s for the dirt. It work ell beyond my expectations. 19mph on the dirt trails and at 43mph on asphalt (a bit downhill) it rode like an Electra-Glide. Like sitting in a Barca-lounger.....a Barca-bike! The Meks carbon shock fork help much, and i had to come up with a rack to haul my panniers because the last day anna half we rode loaded (bikes) back to my buddies cottage east of Grayling from Mackinaw City. I'll load a shot of the bike with my gear on it....too much stuff!

EcoVision Annual Report 2009

EcoVision Annual Report 2009

Last week the City of Edmonton released its EcoVision Annual Report. This document is basically a report card on our environmental status – both for City operations and in the community. We look at all the work done by the city that may have an impact on the environment and evaluate it against specific measures.

The report is not a bragging document. Sure, there are environmental initiatives that we’re doing that we’re incredibly proud of – like our pest control systems and our waste management systems – but there are also areas where we need a lot of work – like in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

We strive to make this report as clear and as accurate as possible. We not only report on what is happening with each of the programs, we also rate them by whether or not they are meeting the measures created for them. For instance, under toxic substances, the report card shows that the status of this area is good in that the City has reduced the amount of toxics used in our operations and is likely to continue, as non-toxic options present themselves, into in the future. On the other hand, the measure of community greenhouse gases is showing that Edmonton is not meeting its target on reducing greenhouse gases (in fact they are continuing to rise) and that trend isn’t likely to get better by the time of the next report.

The Council and administration of the City of Edmonton take this report seriously and use it to work on areas that need improvement. But we hope that you will also read the report and think about how you can have a positive impact on the environment. The protecting the environment is everyone’s responsibility. Until we all make the commitment to do better – drive less, use less water, keep toxins from going down the drain, stop idling our cars – this report will always show areas that need improvement.

The tires are Panaracer 26" x 2.00 skinwall Ridgelines , as the original ties had a center line I thought these tires would be a good replacement . The rims are standard Ayaya alloy rims but the original rims were drilled between the spokes for lightness, I couldn't be bothered drilling the rims as I think they look ok anyhow. This bike came without wheels so it was the closed match I could come up with at the time.

Not my images, from Tutto Mountain Bike 1995.

Digging through my desk drawer looking for more checks, I found a few straggler MTB items from my glory days. We have all the old media stuff in a big bin in garage, but a few are roaming loosely around the house.

Thats me in bottom corner when we got the Mongoose gig-yes, I did end up getting some nice alcoa rims for that dually!
