sunshine - A story. OK, settle down for a good story. When I got to the bird store today, I was wandering around waiting for them to get around to bringing out my baby bird, and I noticed on the white board that they had written that they'd gotten in an adult Quaker Parrot, 7 years old, and he was up for adoption. He would cost $80. I paid $200 for my baby, so I was curious. I waited an hour while I played with my baby Wesley and when I was done with my time with him, I asked about the little Quaker for adoption. Both women behind the counter got very sour looks on their faces and said, almost in tandem, "Oh, he's....well, he's not very nice - in fact, he's mean. He bites. We tried putting his cage out here on the floor, but he bit everyone who tried to touch him and WE can't even get him out of the cage - he won't come to any of us. - Even Barbara can't get him out of the cage and i've never seen a bird Barbara couldn't get out of a cage." "Hmmmmm", I said. "Could I possibly see him?" To say they were reluctant to let me see him, would be a gross understatement. I had to push my way through the whole process. I'll cut to the chase - Sunshine came to me immediately as soon as I opened his cage door. The woman from the store nearly fainted on the spot. She was speechless. I even put him back in and put my hand in first - he raised his foot to reach for me!!! It was kinda funny, really. H never bit me..he jumped on my shoulder and crawled around behind my head and when I reached around for him with my finger, (the perfect opportunity for him to bite me) he jumped right on...the other lady (Barbara) had to come to the back room to see this to be sure it was true. They know the baby bird is my first bird and they just kept staring at him and shaking their heads while I talked to him and petted him. At one point, I asked them, "So, why do think this is happening? Can he just tell that I don't know what I'm doing?" "No," one of them said, still not looking at me but staring at him - he just knows you're not afraid." ANother thing, he was in a very big cage and his former owner had had loaded it with so many toys that you could barely see the bird!!!! Not good. He is a little skittish of having a finger come in from above, but I got him over that in a few seconds. I just think someone bought him and then lost interest and bought alot of toys for him because they felt guilty. BUT, somebody taught him to talk. - a lot!!!! He has a big vocabulary. The last time I put him on his perch and was ready to leave, I said, "bye bye" and plain as you please, he said, "Bye Bye!" THen he said "Sunshine's a good boy!" I bought him and got all the toys in the bargain. We've ordered cages for them and when they come we can bring home Sunshine and about 3 more weeks for Baby. Who have thunk it! Lost roll found - I Taken with Smena 8 almost 30 years ago. The camera was lost by a tourist, found by my grandfather some 7 years earlier and had a timer ! The film roll was hidden among my toys for 30 years and I have just rediscovered it. So... the young couple are my parents, the old woman is my mother's godmother and guess who is the boy... Paris She's is a gorgeous 4 year old German Shepherd mix who was surrendered by her owner because he was moving to a senior living home and wasn't allowed to bring a dog with him. Happy, cuddly and super playful, Paris is an energetic girl who adores affection and bonds very quickly with new folks. She can be a tad protective of her toys so just because of that and her breed she'd do best in a home with only adults or older kids. Paris is full grown at 50lbs and promises to bring tons of joy and love into your life - and you don't need a plane ticket to Europe either! Please come meet her at our New York Avenue shelter! Day 53 - Project 365 - 22 Feb 08 : CIRCUS LIGHTING "Circus Lighting" Another SP for my Project 365. Not my favourite thing to do, but I want to remember the trip to Silvers Circus for this day. So, here ya go. I would've taken a photo of the kids with this light instead, if they didn't go to sleep. Anyway, I'm just quite impressed that the Sigma 30mm f1.4 can capture light the way it does. This was taken in a completely darkened room. The only light I used was from this toy which we bought from the circus. It came up with all sorts of interesting lights and reflected light in varying colours (because of the round spinning lights thing). Really interesting. Mmm... who merchandise This was from my day of treasures! No sooner was a trilling with glee over Sj having bought me the latest Doctor Who Adventures (with FREE pencil tin! Yes, I am 28, but I like the free gifts. I was 27 when this picture was taken, if that makes a difference), than she presented me with - squeee! - a sonic screwdriver! Apparently it was half price, so she bought it for me. That's love, that is. the escalating cost of reindeer food I spotted Santa Claus on Amsterdam Avenue the other day, and we stopped and talked a little.....He spoke frankly about the economy, his friends, and Halloween: his projected date for the completion of most of his toys..... "People think that most of the work is done between Thanksgiving and Christmas, but that's not really possible.....Yes, the elves are putting finishing touches on things, but with all the many mall and department store appearances I am required to make, they have no real supervision............And I really need those promotional appearances for much of the financing of my gifts." I asked him about other sources of his income..... "Well, you see, I have a huge endowment from Mother Nature......she is the wealthiest icon in the universe.....being one of my close friends, she is quite supportive of my mission....Believe it or not, I also get a lot of funding from the Tooth Fairy.....what a lovely young lady! I wish I had her investment team....they're brilliant......she has taken what little money she's made from selling tooth enamel to china factories in Eastern Europe, invested properly, and has made billions......she loves kids, too, and never wants to see me fail......what a generous soul...." I asked him about his close friends... "Well, like I said, Mother Nature is a dear friend....I see her at least once a week......she and Uncle Sam visit Mrs. Claus and I for our weekly poker games.... What fun!. We used to get together with Father Time, but somehow he and Mother Nature are a bit at odds these days......I don't know the main reason....it seems to be some weird disagreement they are having about the importance of the Mayan calender coming to an end......" I asked him what other icons he spends time with..... "Well, we've had the Grim Reaper over for dinner a couple of times, but he is just so anti-social and likes to stick to himself......he's an odd man.....all of the elves hid when he visited, they were very intimidated by his presence....he's another one that Mother Nature isn't too fond of......Mrs. Claus tried to get him to take off that ghastly hood when he visited, but he wouldn't." I asked him about Uncle Sam, and his political leanings.... "Well, he doesn't ever talk politics....I have no idea....we both like to remain neutral.....we did watch the Nixon/Kennedy debates back in the '60s since I was one of the few icons at that time with a television......and then we never watched anything political until last year when we watched the Joe Biden/Sarah Palin debates.....now that was television!" He also talked about the Easter Bunny..... "Delightful child! he eed.....he doesn't like the North Pole weather, but we spend time on the phone.......and he just got on-line last year and is trying to get me on facebook! That'll be the day......." He was carrying a bag filled with reindeer feed and another with some magazines that he had bought at Barnes and Noble..... "Mrs.Claus is fascinated with Brad and Angelina and Jon and Kate......I used to argue with her about it when Liz Taylor and Richard Burton were the news item of the day, but now I just let her go.....I almost encourage it.....it makes her terribly happy, and when she's happy, I'm happy..." Besides Christmas, I asked him about other events that he particularly enjoys...... "Every Valentine's Day, Cupid has a huge party called "The St. Valentine's Cartoon Storybook Love Fest Extravaganza Ball"...everyone's there! Bugs and Mickey and Minnie, Jack and Jill, the Tin Man, Little Red Riding Hood, Tigger, Vampira!....(though it always makes Mrs. Claus a little jealous when we speak..Ho ho ho)......but the most fun person, believe it or not is the Witch. She is hilarious! Wicked, wicked sense of humor....does a great imitation of Charro, and a hilarious Nancy Pelosi........what a dancer, too!...... And she really gets along with all of her nemesis, Snow White, Dorothy, Hansel and Gretel....all of them...... It is really a great time, second only to Christmas! Bunny Basket When Hendrix was a baby I bought this basket, cut some cute fabric to line it and tied it in with some blue gingham ribbon, I re-use it every year. This year the basket includes: From Wal-Mart: a cowboy hat, to wear to the parade, a Cars bubble set and big bottle of bubbles, a rabbit spinny toy thing, Pop Rocks in an egg, a easter hot wheel, and a sonic leapster game on clearance for only $7 and the Princess Bride dvd. From Barnes & Noble: The Velveteen Rabbit and a grown-up Photo book about China, he loves China. From Target: A Spongebob toothbrush & toothpaste. I'm Jewish, I raise Hendrix Jewish, Jason is not really religious, but when we had "the talk" he was adamant that Hendrix have a Easter Basket each year, I never had one growing up, I don't know if this is the norm or what, but hey, I have fun putting it all together :) Hope Everyone has a Happy Easter! The new external hard drive is Safety Cone-size!!!!! And we are really happy about that. Oh, and also the fact that, you know, it works! Did you know these things were sooooo small? And I don't even have to plug it into the wall? OMG! You see, I only like DOWNgrades and the taking away of apps/programs/etc., so I approve of the smallness even though this technically falls into Alicia's no man's land of "upgrading" and "updating" and "computer changes." My idea for when my external hard drive died was to cry, then go to Best Buy and ask for eight gazillion gigabytes of storage with approximately $30 to spend. Also to ask for proof that these little boxes work. Also, enough paper and photo paper so that I can print out EVERYTHING I have on my laptop. Twice. One stack will go in a high-security cave impervious to fire or disasters. And can you find me such a cave? Also for $30? Okay, don't be too proud--I did not acquire this on my own, or find the funny double USB cable for it, or set it up on my own. I did however make progress in NOT watching it back up for all of the 4 hours it took (wtf computer?) and only had minor freak-outs about the number of files. Cuz I'm still pretty convinced I should have 100 files max, not 400,000. Safety Cone agrees, but then again, he can't really count so I think he was just being nice? wolverine4 Full set. I was so pleased with the claws - not too in your face, and not difficult to draw either :):) It wasn't easy finding a nice quote though. He's not one for subtlety is he? Available in my shop. 2011 Hispanic Heritage Opening Ceremony Many backgrounds, many stories, one American spirit LOS ANGELES — Hispanic Heritage Month, an annual observance, covers a 31-day period from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. The months of September and October are significant because they include independence days for five Latin American countries. The remembrance celebrates their rich cultures and many contributions to the United States. This year's opening ceremony for the Los Angeles District began with Chief of Contracting Danny Carrasco's reading of the first paragraph of President Obama's proclamation. "From those who trace their roots to America's earliest days to those who recently came to the United States carrying nothing but hope for a better life, Hispanics have always been integral to our national story. As an American family more than 300 million strong, we constitute one people, sharing sacrifice and prosperity because we know we rise and fall together. America is a richer and more vibrant country because of the contributions of Hispanics, and during National Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the immeasurable impact they have made on our Nation." In his remarks, District Commander Col. Mark Toy commented on this year's theme, "Many backgrounds, many stories, one American Spirit." "It really resonates with me, because in my mind, the quote shows the importance of teamwork and the power that ensues when teams come together to work towards any common goal," said Toy. Toy introduced guest speaker Anna M. Park, executive director of Great Minds in STEM, who recounted her life's journey from a diverse East Los Angeles to University of California Berkeley, New York City's Columbia University and back to Los Angeles' University of Southern California for her Juris Doctor degree. Park has been with GMiS for 11 years. The organization established in 1989 as, Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Corporation, has been providing Science, Technology, Engineering and Math programming for 23 years. GMiS provides STEM awareness programs for federal agencies, corporations, universities and school districts nationwide. While confident in the continued relationship between the Corps and GMiS, Park did note the retirement of a STEM champion. “Lt. Gen. Robert L. Van Antwerp encouraged Corps volunteers to share their passion for STEM by engaging middle and high school students in their classrooms,” said Park. “Under his leadership the Corps more than lived up to its reputation as the premier public civil engineering and environmental science organization,” added Park. Anna Park was such a wonderful speaker, a terrific role model for all of us in the district Toy added. In further recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Los Angeles District, Hispanic Employment Special Emphasis Program Committee will feature a short film on Hispanic culture Oct. 4 and close out the remembrance with Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Sylvia Mendez on Oct. 13. I haven't been able to come up with a cool name for him other than to refer to him as the little monkey, so that's probably how it will be. The little monkey is sitting in a White Castle box because... ...well, because I imagine that little monkeys like White Castle. After all, they're small, tasty sandwiches that are perfectly sized for little guys like these. Transformers Vault This is the Transformers Vault book. It is a nice coffee table book about the Transformers toys, shows, comics, and movies. While not exhaustive like an encylopedia, it does have several nice features. The book ended up being our default autograph book at BotCon 2011. It now hold signatures from G1 voice actors like Gregg Berger and Michael McConnohie, toy designers like Bill Rawley, as well as signatures from 6 of the Transformers Prime cast voice actors.
