The sale of the 1966 Shelby Cobra Super Snake brought a packed house to its feet Saturday at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction after a pair of bidders drove the price up. Carroll Shelby, 84, who created the Cobra in the 60s using Ford engines and a British sport car chassis, said he built the Super Snake — with twin superchargers on a 427 cubic inch V-8 — and drove it for years. A number of years ago, there was a morning DJ team called Baxter & Mark on the old WDIZ-FM radio station. Im sure they were, by far, the most popular morning show in Orlando. One of their regular segments, or features, was called the Hideous Wake-Up This consisted of someone submitting some kind of practical joke with suggestions on what to do or say. They would formulate a plan and then call bb king people, hoping to fool them to the point of tears. Tears of laughter or tears of pain. It didnt matter them. One time, for instance, they called a girl who was set to get married that Saturday and have her reception at the Winter Park Civic Center. They told her that, due to a previous booking, and thus a conflict of interest, she would not be able to have her reception there on Saturday. Someone really screwed up big time. Were sorry. Could you postpone your wedding until the following week? Well, that did not sit well and boy did she cry. They finally fessed up and told her who had set that terrible joke up. It was the best man, with her bb king blessing. I always wondered if they ever did get married that incident. At the Beefy King restaurant, one of the family members who worked there had been a professional hockey player. NHL. Bill Fraser. George Plimpton actually wrote about him in one his books, six pages worth (Open Net: A Professional Amateur in the World of Big-Time Hockey.) One morning I was there, his mother came in. I know I heard her call him Lammikins. You know, one of those names only a mother would call you. Then and there, I got an idea. Hmmm. Suppose I write a letter to those two radio guys. Ask them to call Bill and tell him you work for Restaurants & Institutions magazine and youre doing an article on small, independent fast food restaurants in the south. Could we come by and interview you and maybe take a few pictures? Now, I had discussed this with his brother-in-law, Roland, to help set it up. He said Bill is bb king up by 5. Call him any time after that. No problem for Baxter & Mark. They had bb king 6-10 am shift, so calling that early was no problem. Tell bb king you had heard he was a professional hockey player at one time. Play that up. How many teeth did you lose? He wont get it. I mean, wouldnt you wonder how the two would be related? Then hit him with the Lammikins thing. Thatll get him. Hell freak. And so he did. Click. As soon as he heard the nickname, he hung up. They promptly called him back and he was mad. How did you know that? Who are you? They told him who did it. I knew he wouldnt come after me. I had the blessings of his family. After bb king aired, and they probably played it over and over again, at least a half dozen times that day, youd bb king amazed how many people came in, for years after bb king wanting to meet Lammikins. I had created a very succesful advertisement. For free. A bb king page ad in the Orlando Sentinel would have cost thousands of dollars and never would have had nearly that kind of impact. Wow. I was gold around there. Yes sir, Mr. Dave. Anything you want. But actually it was the quality of food that sustained that one shot campaign for so long. My job is to drive in customers, yours is to keep them. And what are friends for? Besides, they already had a strong customer base, but, when someone came into town from Podunk, Florida, bb king sure did go out of their way to stop by Beefy King to meet Lammikins. The funny thing was, as resourceful as the Beefy bb king were, they managed to cater functions there at the radio station for quite some time after that. One time, for at least a week, Baxter & Mark were hyping a visit by B.B. King that Friday. When the moment arrived, they eed, Here comes B.B. King now!&Now hold on&What the&Hey, thats not B.B. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is not at all pleased with a new radio ad being run by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in South Carolina. According to cloverfield review McCains new ad blasts Reid for saying the war is lost earlier in the year. McCain has been one of President Bushs biggest backers on his war policy. Seven months ago, Democrat majority leader Harry Reid said the war in Iraq was lost, the ad begins. Well, he was wrong, CNN reported. CNN also noted that Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, McCains most prominent booster in the state, speaks for the majority of the spot, saying the troop surge is working and that we need a president prepared to win. Reid is very with McCain new radio ad, and a Reid aide fired right back at the Arizona Republican tonight. While I understand that Senator McCain is fighting to revive his failed presidential campaign, his remarks are at odds with the vast majority of the American people, who are demanding a responsible end to this war, said Jim Manley, Reids spokesman. These kinds of attacks and his consistent support of a failed strategy that has kept our troops mired in an endless civil war in another country will only undermine Senator McCains credibility with voters. Manley added: Democrats have given the troops a cloverfield review raise, increased funding for veterans and most importantly have fought to give our soldiers what they deserve a strategy for success. We will continue to oppose Bush Republicans like Senator McCain who are committed to a failed war strategy and to standing in the way of critical needs at home. |

The Dryden Theatre is having an 80s Film Festival this weekend, showing such classics as Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo and Valley Girl (featuring a very young Nicolas Cage true 80s chick Deborah Foreman). Now, I love 80s films and have a fairly nice DVD collection of them, most of which were purchased for $2 a piece from a DVD dump in Kmart. Most people, other than my dear husband of course, cant understand how I can watch these awful moves. And some of them really are awful. But Im thinking everyone has guilty viewing pleasures. This was released on a Fred Thompson myspace page yesterday evening concerning Spencer Abraham: Monday, July 30, 2007 Apparently there hae been some rumors going around that is nothing more than a character asssassination attempt and slander-job. Ironically the rumors came from a conservative blogger named Debbie Schlussel. What she has said is spreading throughout the internet and many people pat summerall it is factual. The rumors that Spencer Abraham is laundrying money from Al Qaeda/is Pro Islamic/or anything of that nature is absolutely false. Also just so you know Spencer Abrahams job is only to help garner support and help be an Ambassador to Washington . Just because Spencer Abraham happens to be of part middle eastern ethnicity that must mean hes a terrorist supporter apparently. Spencer Abraham is a devout CHRISTIAN. Not Muslim/Islamic, nor was he ever. That kind of assumption is nothing more than racist slander. If it was actually true by the way the Democrats would have been all over Fred for it&but they havent. Debbie Stabenow (woman who ran against him for Senator) and other organizations have ran in the past ads on TV slandering him, they werent true. Randy Enwright just so everyone knows is the top adviser who Fred takes advisement from on day to day matters. There had been some thought that the hiring of Spencer Abraham was not even true, this confirms that it actually has happened. I do think, that things online did get out of hand and some lies got mixed with the truth. However, I still personally find this duncan hunter disturbing. Yet, I am still strongly advocating that people look at his voting record for themselves, there is a lot of important information. Including his multiple votes for amnesty, to import foreign workers, to reduce fines on companies that hire illegals, and etc. Also there were his happy new year graphics on favor of affirmative action, campaign finance reform, minimum wage, and against the duncan hunter of Bill Clinton. In a comment later on, on the same page of this blog: Fred Thompson is against open borders&. I never said Spencer Abrahams is not for Open Borders.
