Dogs Dogs is the culmination of everything that has led us to this point, all the internal and external struggles that have made us who we are. To us, it serves the downtrodden of our times, who can feel their struggle reflected in ours. We called the album Dogs because it is a personification of everything we all have become and a wide reaching, never-ending analogy for what we currently feel; a unified stamp of our lives in this moment. We have been beaten to the ground, spit on and kicked, and we have bitten back and clawed at those who are against us. We have felt caged. We have been hungry and fought for scraps. We have been pet and praised in one instant, and neglected and abused in the next. We have formed a pack, and we are fiercely loyal to one another. (5) Parlor Nov 05 This is a Pachinko Parlor (gambling center) located in Fujimino, just outside Tokyo. Pachinko is quite addicting for many Japanese and it's not considered a respectable past-time. Yet, since gambling is illegal in Japan, Pachinko is their loophole, using little metal balls instead of coins, and exchanging prizes in toys and food, for actual money through a tiny window on the side of the building. These places are also overbearingly smokey and ear-piercingly loud. Parlor View of the parlor in the Scottish Rite Temple at 332 East First in Wichita Kansas. It was built in 1887-1888 for the YMCA by Proudfoot and Bird. The YMCA sold the building in 1898 to the Scottish Rite Masons. In 1907 an addition was added to the north side. The fruits of palms are considered to be drupes, or fruits containing a fleshy, soft part surrounding a hard seed center. Parlor Palm: One of the most popular palms in the world, its ability to put up with low light, drought and general abuse is legendary. Additionally it flowers when still quite young. Too well known to need any description, it has been in use since Victorian times and is suitable for home or conservatory. It is also known as the Table palm or Neanthe bella palm but the correct name is Chamaedorea elegans 'Bella'. Parlor Palms can adapt to just about any typical office or home interior. It is grown primarily for indoor use in 6 inch - 14 inch containers, ranging in height from 18 inches to 3-4 feet You'll find it used as a table top plant, grouped together in beds as under plantings, and as a low stand alone plant. The Parlor Palm is one of the hardiest and impossible to kill houseplants! Confidently Granite guided the team into the lead of the race, when suddenly they were caught in a raging Arctic blizzard. Now Susan and the whole team depended on Granite to get them through the storm. He had to call on all his inner strength and courage to save them—if he could. I must be attuned to reflections. Wherever I am, I notice reflections. We were sat at a table in the outdoor restaurant of this stately home, and I saw this chrome barrier stand reflecting the whole building. I started photographing it. Paul (my brother-in-law) joked about it: "what's he doing now?" - I have a reputation for photographing just about everything. But when he saw it he started photographing it too. I'm hoping Paul uploads his photos too. He kept trying to shoo me out of his shot. Wonder if I crept into any? When I look at this photo it feels kind of strange. I think my eyes follow it or process it in a clockwise direction. It's like a twist. Hard to explain, but it's a feeling. I'm drawn to the hoop on the end of the blue rope, then I go up and left around the building. Shot at 200mm and f/10. 200mm keeps me in the background! F/10 keeps lots of the reflection in focus! Before and after On our never-ending quest to fill our French house with as much junk as possible, we found this small stove at the Lyon flea market, cost $40. A couple of hours cleaning out the cinders, scrubbing the enamel and buffing the chrome and bingo, we had just the right sized table for our vintage butcher's scale. LH1 I couldnt do this without a little HDR now could I? Anyway the back story: I was tired of working on small, THIN computer work tables. I started sizing up a proper surface and surfing through the IKEA catalogue. For some reason the idea of edge lighting a glass top came to mind and I found IKEA has one called the Vika Glasholm. It comes in a few different flavors but I liked the plain frosted one. The frosting helps diffuse the light of the LEDs. Wiring the LEDs was relativley easy too. The rest of the furniture is pretty standard IKEA fare, finding the glass was the major breakthrough. Local custom glass shops wanted about twice as much as IKEA for the 3/8 glass of a similar size (30x60) and thats without any frosting. The LEDs and the powersupply cost almost as much as the glass! The personal Black and White photos make me feel at home, the archicterual theme is very personal, unlike most of the work I do for clients, I think it helps anchor me. After- Living Room The huge armoire was a find at a garage sale for $20.00- What a deal! The glass top end table was place next to the sofa was the dining table from the last apartment. Not a perfect choice for storage issues in small spaces, but a quick fix none the less. The sofa and chair is from Ikea. The coffee table was inherited from a friend- I flipped it upside down-had a piece of glass cut-frosted it and use it to store seasonal items in. 'What is Bussaco?' I wondered. Passing small towns, and vineyards we drove up and up into a large remote wooded area. Through the trees I could see ponds and fountains and flower lined paths. Rounding one last curve an opening appears and around the corner a palace! Yes, a fairy tale style palace with formal gardens and ponds with white swans. Ornate and elaborate, my eyes still popping open, Carmen mentions we can stay here. 'Oh sure pull the other one' I say. She looks confused as she tries to figure out that idiom. They would not let us explore the interior as it is a hotel for guests only but they do have a restaurant which is open to the public. We lunch there, a typical Portugese 4 course lunch, complete with a small bottle of wine sitting in a floor standing ice bucket next to our table. The interior of the restaurant is just as ornate as the exterior, more so with wood carved ceilings, hand painted murals, and large arching glass doorways. I am impressed, and the lunch is prix-fixe at 39Euros, which I thought was pretty cheap. I wondered the cost of the rooms. $170 for a suite, which was the same price I paid in Hawaii for a regular hotel room. 'We're staying here' I said to Carmen and now her eyes are popping... I learned to love the little things because of the big things I could not love not my words, and I wish I recalled the person that deserves the credit... ...yet they seem like words to describe the first few chapters of my life. Little Things by Sharon Olds After she’s gone to camp, in the early evening I clear our girl’s breakfast dishes from the rosewood table, and find a small crystallized pool of maple syrup, the grains standing there, round, in the night, I rub it with my fingertip as if I could read it, this raised dot of amber sugar, and this time when I think of my father, I wonder why I think of my father, of the beautiful blood-red glass in his hand, or his black hair gleaming like a broken-open coal. I think I learned to love the little things about him because of all the big things I could not love, no one could, it would be wrong to. So when I fix on this tiny image of resin or sweep together with the heel of my hand a pile of my son’s sunburn peels like insect wings, where I peeled his back the night before camp, I am doing something I learned early to do, I am paying attention to small beauties, whatever I have—as if it were our duty to find things to love, to bind ourselves to this world. solids for amanda's third block I decided to just use the solids I had leftover. it became a challenge at the end since I only had two of the colors left. it was really freeing not worrying about prints or where a piece would go. I just randomly put colors together. I hope you like it amanda! solid Won some fabric on eBay (just stimulating the economy, ahem). No idea what they will become, but it’s so hard to resist any rainbow of solids.
