Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills: 50th Anniversary 50TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION OF THE RENOWNED BIBLE OF CLIMBING AND MOUNTAINEERING. With more than 600,000 copies sold, Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills is the acclaimed bible for climbers all over the world, and the new edition marks the 50th anniversary of this seminal title. Since the publication of the first edition in 1960, Freedom, as the book is known, has endured as a classic mountaineering text. From choosing equipment to tying a climbing knot, and from basic rappelling techniques to planning an expedition, it is all here in this essential mountaineering reference. A team of more than forty experts, all active climbers and climbing educators, reviewed, revised, and updated this compendium to reflect the latest evolutions in mountaineering equipment and techniques. Major updates include a significant new chapter on conditioning, plus detailed and extensive revisions to rescue and first-response, aid climbing, and waterfall and ice climbing. (17) Mountaineers I was out hiking near Beartooth Pass at about 11,000 feet and came upon these expert mountaineers. They offered to help me find a better way to get through the pass in exchange for some food and shelter. I couldn't resist their offer and took them up on it only to find that they followed me home and now seem to follow me everywhere I go.... They sure do make for some great company though! Each bead starts off with its color base and finishes (in this case turquoise with a Picasso coating) and is then fed into a faceting machine and then onto a grinding wheel. The polished finish is attained by heat to the point where their surfaces begin to melt, creating their shiny little faces. (day onehundred-and-ten) 18th September 2010 My eighteenth-and-a-half birthday party. Went shopping in town with Mum and she treated me to a new outfit. Posted fourteen prints to eight different countries as prizes for my recent giveaway, and when I got back to the boutique Mum had already picked out a bunch of things I liked (she has awesome taste.) Settled on a silvery-blue dress and dusty pink peep-toe heels with a velvet bow. Jonny texted to wish me a happy unbirthday, and Kim came over to help me do my hair. We bussed to the city and met the others in Costa, and Ben and Rachel told us about their travels and we told them about all the things we've been up to while they've been away. Headed to Pinocchio's. It's a quaint little Italian, and we were made very welcome. Chose their lasagne and had scrumptious chocolate cake for dessert. Showed the others he written version of my One Hundreds Days, and we passed it round and reminisced. Tom convinced me that having a glass of Bailey's with him was a good idea, and it made me giggly and sleepy. The boys laughed over the length of my dress and we said goodbye to Ben and Xav as we made our way back to the bus station. Back home, Laura had arrived. We all piled into my bedroom (those who haven't seen it since day seventy-eight wanted to admire their handiwork) and then got into pyjamas and settled down on the living room floor to watch movies. Chatted and laughed and ate Kim and Lottie's wonderful surprise birthday cupcakes (complete with cadles and singing!) and fell asleep some time in the early morning. * The most wonderful moment of the evening, though, was when, sitting around the table in Pinocchio's before dessert, Alice presented me with a gift. The enormous fact which I haven't mentioned is that on day seventy-three I lost my bracelet again. It is somewhere on the campus of my university-to-be, and I will almost certainly never find it. Upset as I've been, the peace I made when I first lost it at the beginning of summer has stayed with me, and I have come to terms with no longer having it. However, unbeknown to me, as a gift for my unbirthday Jonny suggested my friends club together and buy me something of a replacement. What they gave me tonight was a silver charm bracelet, picked out by Alice, with six tiny charms chosen by the eleven of them together. Each one, Alice said, represents a part of me. A book, a pair of ballet shoes, a camera, a pot of pens, a violin, and a star. What they could not know was that this bracelet not only lets me carry a part of myself, as my last one did, but also a part of each of them; my friends who thought of the idea and chose each charm. Now that summer is over and we have started to go our separate ways I am realising again how extraordinarily lucky I am to have friends like these in my life. This summer has been wonderful, and such a large part of it has been down to them. I have never been given such a beautiful, perfect gift. Preston North End v Bristol Rovers FA Cup 3rd Round Tie, played on the 3rd January 1981, between two sides in trouble at the wrong end of the old second division table. The Gas roared into gear and were 4-0 up at half time, one of the goals being scored by a youthful Gary Mabbutt. In the second half Rovers went to sleep having thought the match won, allowing Preston to come back with three goals of their own. Our Lady’s Tears Convallaria majalis, commonly known as the lily of the valley or lily-of-the-valley, is possibly the only species in the genus Convallaria in the flowering plant family Ruscaceae (or one of two, or three, if C. keiskei and C. transcaucasica are recognised as separate species). It was formerly placed in the lily family Liliaceae, or in its own family called Convallariaceae. This woodland plant is native throughout the cool temperate Northern Hemisphere in Asia and Europe and a limited native population in Eastern USA (Convallaria majalis var. montana). The flower is also known as Our Lady's tears, since, according to Christian legend, the lily of the valley came into being from Eve's tears after she was driven with Adam from the Garden of Eden, although this seems unlikely, since in Catholic parlance, "Our Lady" refers to the Virgin Mary. Another Christian legend states that Mary's tears turned to lily of the valley when she cried at the crucifixion of Jesus, and because of this it is also known as Mary's tears. According to another legend, lilies of the valley also sprang from the blood of Saint Leonard of Noblac during his battles with a dragon. It is a symbol of humility in religious painting. Lily of the valley is considered the sign of Christ's second coming. The power of men to envision a better world was also attributed to the lily of the valley. The Thawing Calendula, pot marigold, is a genus of about 12-20 species of annual or perennial herbaceous plants in the daisy family Asteraceae. Calendula should not be confused with other plants that are also known as marigolds, such as plants of the genus Tagetes, corn marigolds or marsh marigolds. The name Calendula stems from the Latin kalendae, meaning first day of the month, presumably because pot marigolds are in bloom at the start of most months of the year. The common name marigold probably refers to the Virgin Mary, or its old Saxon name 'ymbglidegold', which means 'it turns with the sun'. Pot Marigolds typically bloom quickly (in under two months) in bright yellows, reds, and oranges throughout the summer and well into the fall. The Great Room - Marble Hill house - taken from the guide book The Great Room provides the grand finale to a crescendo in English Palladian design that begins with the villa`s setting, its exterior elevations, and continues with the visitor`s route through the hall and up the staircase. Its sheer scale comes as a surprise in this compact house while the lavish gilded and carved ornament and fitted paintings seem equally in contrast to the sober decor seen downstairs. In this purpose-built house, conceived for the sociable retirement of the Prince of Wales`s mistress, the Great Room would have been the one `state room` - the focus of Mrs Howard`s resources, where she could hold court with her many intellectual admirers. The room was once furnished with four marble-topped peacock side tables [one of which has been rediscovered and returned to the room]. The whole `piano nobile` would have been open to view, as a suite of rooms through which guests would have paraded, admiring beds bedecked with damask, matching curtains, lacquered chinoiserie furniture and porcelain. After some musical entertainment or dancing, guests would have gone downstairs to dine, and end the evening over cards, backgammon, port and walnuts. Dining Room Side Table This marble topped side table and gilded mirror was added to the Dining Room in the Winter of 2008/9. It is the perfect place for flowers and seems to compliment the 20-armed chandelier perfectly. Gently, he pulls the cap off the eyepiece, but then simply stares at the eyepiece and does not get close enough to look through it. A clock is ticking loudly. He replaces the eyepiece and looks out the window. In his car driving to the fishing club, he will lean forward until his face is almost against the windshield as he looks at the sky. When he stops to urinate, he also looks at the sky. CUT TO: Scene 8. Interior. Thing Four farmers sit at a long table with the scientist. They are inside the Thing, the meeting house of the municipality. The farmers sit according to their orietantation: the farmer from the north, Julius, sits at the north, etc. Farmer Julius We need your help, Sir. Farmer WEST Only you can help us. I am sure of this. SCIENTIST How long have you men known me? (Pause) I am always ready to help. You know this. Farmer JULIUS This is not about a lost sheep or a broken axle. Farmer WEST We need you to save the future. You can do something we cannot. You have no future, no crops coming, but you have your legs. And you are good with a gun, we have seen this for years. We need you to run a mission. Farmer EAST Oh come on. This isn’t Vietnam on TV. Just say it. Or I will. SCIENTIST Is this about the tractors? You’re going to tell me you have no yen to pay for them. Or no dollars? And you want me to rob a bank because I’m dying soon? (Long pause.) Farmer JULIUS Do you think we are meeting here as a joke? SCIENTIST I’m sorry. Go on. I will help as I can. Farmer SOUTH I told you he would be diplomatic. Did I not say it? Ah, he will help as he “can”! Let’s send him home and let him expire in peace. (To the Scientist . . . ) What the hell do you mean, if you can. You have no choice! Farmer JULIUS Sit down and shut up. We’re not Polish. Sit down and shut up. I will tell him politely what to do. Farmer South sits down, a look of disgust on his face. The Scientist stares silently at the men; he has never seen them so irritated. Farmer JULIUS I am terribly sorry, Sir, that we have not asked about your prostate. Are you in pain? CUT TO: Scene 9. Interior. Living room Anna is sitting on the sofa, a book in her lap. Lights reflect in the window as her husband arrives home. She sits back and sighs, as if she has something difficult to say to him, and dreads his entrance into the living room. She puts on her glasses and pretends to read as he walks in. But she is surprised when she sees him, because he walks in holding a rifle by its barrel. He lifts the gun in the doorway and shows it in the faint light of her reading lamp. ANNA They want you to shoot more foxes? SCIENTIST No, they want me to shoot Westhamson, the car importer, because he is in town for a few days from the Canaries. ANNA Your uncle? SCIENTIST They’ve already talked to my aunt, and she has given her blessings and wants me to visit her before I see him. ANNA Do you mean, shoot, as in murder? SCIENTIST Yes. Cold blood. One of the farmers has had a vision, and claims I will get away without detection, and that my remaining days will be peaceful and pain-free. ANNA That guy would have been burned to a crisp down on the beach just a generation ago for his visions. But what do you think? SCIENTIST I have no choice, really. ANNA They’re not blackmailing you because of me or because of your mother, right? SCIENTIST No, no. I don’t care who knows my secrets. They are worse than pride, I have no strength to carry them any more. ANNA You know I will help you however I can. I’ll drive the getaway car, give you a blowjob, pretend to be my sister . . . I will pull the trigger, even, if you make sure I am on your life insurance policy, please. SCIENTIST You are my beneficiary. Don’t worry about that. I can’t use your help, Anna. If I could, I would ask for it. You’ve been the best partner any living creature could ask for, and what I feel for you is beyond love, really. It’s a sort of religion. I will try to find the insurance papers. ANNA When will you see your uncle? SCIENTIST The day after tomorrow perhaps. He’s not really my uncle, so let’s not call him that. ANNA Will you tell George? SCIENTIST No, George hates his father and he would want to be involved if there’s a plot. And if George is involved there is a possibility of a screw-up. And Westhamson will be very suspicious if his son suddenly wants to see him. It will just be me. ANNA Let me call Westhamson and tell him I am coming, too, so he will be sure to make the time for us, alone, without secretaries. SCIENTIST Okay, that’s a good idea. Tell him you’re coming from the spa. But sleep tight, I want to work a little bit. CUT TO: Scene 10. Interior. Study The Scientist sits in his study. He is looking at his telescope in the foreground. The instrument seems to glow, as if reflecting some astronomical disturbance in the sky outside the study’s large UNHCR staff trapped in Abijan Office Compound: Interview with Jacques Franquin, Representative in Côte d'Ivoire Liberian refugees in the Park auto of UNHCR Abidjan, waiting for a repatriation or to be relocated UNHCR UNHCR staff trapped in Abijan Office Compound: Interview with Jacques Franquin, Representative in Cote d'Ivoire ABIDJAN, Cote d'Ivoire, April 7 (UNHCR) – For the past week, a small group of UNHCR staff have been trapped inside the refugee agency’s office complex in the conflict-torn Cote d'Ivoire city of Abidjan. Jacques Franquin, UNHCR’s representative in Cote d'Ivoire, has been helping to keep morale up as he tries to arrange for his team and some 300 Liberian refugees to be evacuated to safety. Earlier this week, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres hailed the team in Abidjan for their courage and their deviotion to the refugees under their charge. Franquin spoke by phone earlier today to Alexandra Eurdolian from UNHCR’s public information section and told her about the drama and challenges. Excerpts: How many are you in the compound? What’s it like there? We are six international staff – myself, the security officer and four staff on mission. We also have four local guards and 300 refugees in the compound. This morning, one of the refugees gave birth and she named her boy after our security officer, Bizo. We are trying to survive. As UNHCR’s representative, I am the most privileged – I have my own office with a big table, a sofa and a bathroom. So I live quite well. We also have running water and electricity. Do the refugees also have water and electricity? All the refugees have access to water and electricity in the canteen that they occupy. They can also charge their telephone batteries. What’s your food situation like? Food is the most critical issue for us. We are surviving on canned food — sardines, tuna, and we are almost at the end of our stock. Some mornings we can manage to send a guard to get some bread. That’s it. The other day they managed to get some soda, so sometimes we have that. We had a small stash of rice and noodles. We are able to cook because the refugees have some charcoal. Usually the female refugees go to the market, but now they are a bit short of money. And anyhow, there’s less and less to buy in the markets. We are working with other organizations, such as OCHA [UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs], to find sacks of rice for the refugees because they are getting more and more angry. What’s the security situation like? Now the situation is a bit better. There was fighting in the street just 30 metres from here and it was quite scary. I saw one soldier being killed. And sometimes there are stray bullets, in fact two refugees have been hit — one in the chest, and a little girl got hit in the stomach. She had to be evacuated to a hospital with the help of the ICRC [International Committee of the Red Cross] and the Ivorian Red Cross. They took her and her father by ambulance and we heard that she had surgery and survived. It was also quite tense a few days ago when the pro-Bagbo [presidential candidate Laurent Gbagbo] soldiers were here and deliberately scaring the population by shooting randomly all over the place. For lots of young soldiers of the republican forces [loyal to Gbagbo’s foe and presidential rival, Alassane Ouattara], the city of Abidjan probably looked like a big supermarket ready to be looted. Our office was attacked by looters last Thursday – we were extremely frightened. They ended up leaving with one vehicle after threatening our guards. We found the vehicle the next day about 500 metres away and riddled with bullets. coffee love served up in my kitchen. Finally had a semi-free Saturday to start playing in the Cliche Saturday scavenger hunt. This one's for the hearts category (duh!). Can anyone give me tips on lighting photos like this (from above)? This was just with window light, because I tried some with my speedlight, and they were a little scary. I would have liked to have kept my aperture at f/8 or narrower, so the heart and table would be in focus, but with just available light and a tripod that won't let me take photos in this direction, that was out of the question (unless I wanted a seriously high ISO). I suppose I can ask on the creative tabletop photography group too. I will be back later to check other Cliche Saturday posts -- my family is needing me right now. HCS! Vintage World The living room on the first floor is an oblong space, which wasn’t easy to furnish. It exhibits the – albeit ever changing – modern design treasures of the couple. The sofa was designed by Milo Baughman in the 50s. The photograph above it is by artist Martin Denker. The two leather chairs are works by French designer Pierre Paulin, the book rack a piece by Charlotte Perriand. The black and white wooden chairs are by Joe Colombo, the “Artichoke Lamp” by Danish designer Poul Henningsen (Louis Poulsen). The carpet was custom made (Asha Carpets). PA - Mill Run: Fallingwater - Livingroom Fallingwater's monumental 1,800 square foot living measures roughly 40 by 50 feet and a central, symmetrical raised cove ceiling. The 23?" x 18?" x 60" wood coffee table was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The smaller tabonettes, a side table or occasional table, also designed by Wright, came in three sizes and all bearing a resemblance to their larger coffee table counterpart. The name, tabonette, came about from a mistaken transcription by one of Wright's apprentices who may misspelled the word taboret. The Zabuton, 25?" x 29?" floor cushions, were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1939. The High Hassocks, also designed by Wright, are taller versions of the Zabuton at 12" x 26" x 21?". They represent one of the earliest uses of latex foam, a material suggested by Edgar Jaufmann Jr., in a residential setting. Surrounded by a walnut veneer frame, the floor cushions are upholsted with either a red or yellow, heavily textured, wool blend Jack Lenor Larsen fabric called Doria. The free floating seats of differing heights help create a casual environment. Fallingwater, sometimes referred to as the Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr. Residence or just the Kaufmann Residence, located within a 5,100-acre nature reserve 50 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built between 1936 and 1939. Built over a 30-foot flowing waterfall on Bear Run in the Mill Run section of Stewart Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, the house served as a vacation retreat for the Kaufmann family including patriarch, Edgar Kaufmann Sr., was a successful Pittsburgh businessman and president of Kaufmann's Department Store, and his son, Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., who studied architecture briefly under Wright. Wright collaborated with staff engineers Mendel Glickman and William Wesley Peters on the structural design, and assigned his apprentice, Robert Mosher, as his permanent on-site representative throughout construction. Despite frequent conflicts between Wright, Kaufmann, and the construction contractor, the home and guesthouse were finally constructed at a cost of $155,000. Fallingwater was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966. It was listed among the Smithsonian's 28 Places to See Before You Die. In a 1991 poll of members of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), it was voted "the best all-time work of American architecture." In 2007, Fallingwater was ranked #29 on the AIA 150 America's Favorite Architecture list. RECLAIMED WOOD TABLE TOP - TABLE TOP
Reclaimed wood table top - 2 drawer console table - Antique conference tables. Reclaimed Wood Table Top
Reclaimed Wood Stripped 6-person Dining Table (India) Each piece of wood has lived a long life before being assembled into this sturdy dining table. The wood comprising this handmade table was salvaged from furniture, old billboards, or whatever else was lying about and was left intentionally rustic, so the character of the wood comes through. Product Features: Colors: Variety of original paint colors Frame materials: Reclaimed wood Finish: Wax top coat Dimensions: 30 inches high x 40 inches wide x 73 inches long Story Behind the Art:This product was created in North Western India. Once the British removed its armed forces from the region in the late 40s a majority of the industries available for the local economy disappeared with them. The indigenous people went back to the traditional crafts and furniture manufacturing that they had known for generations. This industry has truly created a renaissance in economic growth in the region. What is Worldstock? The handcrafted touch of artisan skill creates variations in color, size and design. If buying two of the same item, slight differences should be expected. Note: Color discrepancies may occur between this product and your computer screen.ImportedShips Carbon Neutral* Assembly Required (13) pallet table While taking a break at work I noticed a pallet and had a vision. This is how it turned out. This coffee table is refined and also rustic. Wood pallets are everywhere and are mostly dicarded after one use. If you have a table saw, bar clamps and a few basic hand tools you could build something like this. As for the table top after glued togother take it to a cabinet shop to get planed. Mosts shops will do this for very little to nothing. Good luck!!!! Java Dining Table + Bench The beautiful table top and frame are made from 100% reclaimed Java Mix, which in its former life was a shipping crate that sailed the world over. SQUARE OUTDOOR COFFEE TABLE - COFFEE TABLE
SQUARE OUTDOOR COFFEE TABLE - GLASS PUB TABLE. Square Outdoor Coffee Table
VIFAH V1132 Outdoor Wood Coffee Table Design: Enjoy the good look of an Outdoor Square Table, the simple design will compliment any home exterior decor. Constructed of beautiful FSC High Density Wood (Shorea) wood, this lovely table will help you create a great look for your yard that is comfortable and versatile. Material: High Density Wood (or also known as Shorea in our line) is the premium grade of solid “Wood Gradis” hardwood, grown in 100 % well managed forests in Brazil, certified by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council). There is little difference between High Density Wood (Shorea) and Teak when broken down to their core essence. The biggest attribute of High Density Wood (Shorea) is undoubtedly the strength of the timber. It’s renowned for its excellent resistance to every day wear and tear. It is extremely durable and tightly grained to produce a desirable density. It remains unaffected by all variations in weather, especially its resistance to damp conditions makes itself extremely competent at combating insect attacks and decay. (17) Tosca al fresco... Quick sketch I did before dinner. We have a favorite Italian place here south of us on a Spanish square. There are shops and restaurants, live music and, tonight, just happened to be Saturday night cruise night so all the classic metal was out to play. We had a GORGEOUS Impala parked near where we were sitting. The outdoor area had wonderfully comfy green wrought iron chairs, green marble top tables and ceiling fans. A plant lined railing separated us from the sidewalk below. I have a small video I made on my DX2 but have no clue how or if I can post it here... After dinner we went to the Kilwin's fudge & chocolates shop to pick up some goodies for my mother, grandmother and L; two white chocolate covered macadamia nut clusters (mom's fave but kiss o'death for me), two dark chocolate peanut butter turtley things, one chocolate covered candied (not dried) pineapple ring and my two little Jamaican (rum) Chocolate Truffles. :::dreamy sigh::: Grabbed a water at Starbuck's and some Madeliene's (my fave, saved the truffles for later) then headed over to pick up my girl from her grandmother's and go home. It was a wonderfully relaxing night... incredible food and wonderful company. Outdoor Coffee There are plenty of places to eat and drink at the Haninge mall in Handen. And there's a coffee place at the popular cultural centre. But if you want to enjoy your coffee (or food), outdoors (like I do), on the big Poseidon's square you will have to sit on the cold stone stairs. The square is quite big and you could easily fit in a number of chairs and tables here. Last year that's what the owner of the cafe did, only to see all the seats being occupied by customers from other restaurants. Which he obviously didn't like. So now we are back sitting on the wall as I'm doing here. How hard can it be for the mall (or even the municipality), to fix this problem? Preferably before winter.
