The Singing Sleuth Returns (The Singing Sleuth Series)

It sounded like a good idea …

Offer passengers elite classes in diet, health, and exercise.
Persuade world-renowned experts to teach the seminars.
Book them on the Pegasus—a luxurious cruise ship sailing from Florida to Alaska.

That was the thought of Collin Woodward, the Vice President of Flagship Cruise Line, when he invited on board:
Clifford Freeman, the mesmerizing hypnotherapist
Kenna Chavasse, the seductive light-food chef
Jean Claude Regale, the mysterious Olympic star
Rita Diamond, the free-spirited diet expert
Dr. Marco Renato, the erudite psychiatrist and
Deidre Lovejoy, the hot-tempered TV talk-show hostess and Woodward's fourth wife.

The timing of this cruise couldn’t have been better for Alec DunBarton, The Singing Sleuth. After serving three months on the Pegasus, he had managed to gain thirty-five pounds by eating six fattening meals a day, drinking double Scotches, and avoiding all exercise.

Just as Alec finds a weight-loss plan that seems promising, one of the guest speakers is killed in the ship’s sauna. Even though homicide is a nasty business, Alec is more certain that
“Losing Weight is Murder!”

Corned Beef!

Corned Beef!

Until last Monday the only corned beef dinner I'd ever eaten was my dad's. His cabbage is sauteed in butter and brown sugar, the large chunks of boiled potato are slathered in a "sauce" of thinned mashed potatoes and the corned beef is tender and sliced thin. On Monday a friend ordered the corned beef platter at a local bar. It was good, actually quite good, but it reminded me of how damn lucky I am to eat my dad's food every day :) Happy St. Patties Day!

About Treadmills
Walking is still considered one of the most beneficial cardiovascular exercises for people of all ages, body types, and fitness levels. As a fundamental form of aerobic training, walking has numerous physical benefits for the heart, lungs, and circulatory system, while also increasing muscle tone and burning fat calories. Treadmills provide a convenient way to regularly exercise in all weather conditions in the comfort and safety of your own home.
From beginners just starting an exercise regimen to advanced athletes looking to maintain their fitness level, anyone interested in getting and staying in shape can benefit greatly from regular use of a treadmill. Treadmills allow you to determine the pace, distance, and complexity of the workout based on your needs, all while watching television, talking on the telephone, or reading a magazine. Much easier on sensitive joints like the knees and hips, treadmill walking and running surfaces are typically long, padded platforms that allow ample room for a long stride and comfortable, low-impact walk or jog without the harsh contact of a concrete surface.
While many different types, styles, and price ranges of treadmills exist, many of them offer unique features like a fold-up design for easy storage, an electronic display monitor showing speed, distance, workout time, incline level, and burned calories, and EKG grip pulses to monitor the heart rate while exercising. Regardless of the simple to complex features you may choose, treadmills offer an array of aerobic exercise opportunities that will provide long-lasting beneficial cardiovascular results without a commute to the gym or a jog in the rain.

Meatball Subs

Meatball Subs

Meatball Subs

Ingredients:

1-1/2 cups fresh whole wheat bread crumbs (from 2 to 3 slices firm bread)
1/2 cup milk
1 large egg
3 cloves garlic, finely minced
1 cup grated parmesan cheese
1/4 cup minced fresh basil
1/4 cup minced fresh flat-leaf parsley
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or more to taste
1 pound ground dark meat turkey
Olive oil
4 cups marinara sauce, homemade or store-bought
6 hoagie rolls, split in half

Make It:

Place the bread crumbs in a medium-size bowl and add the milk,
stirring to combine. Let the mixture sit at room temperature for 10 minutes.
Add the egg, garlic, parmesan, basil, parsley, salt, and pepper, and stir to blend.
Add the ground turkey and use your hands to combine the mixture; don’t overmix.

Position a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 350 degrees F.
Generously oil the bottom of a heavy oven-proof skillet, such as cast iron, or a baking pan;
set aside.

To make the meatballs, fill either a 1/4-cup or a 1/3-cup dry measuring
cup level with the brim. (You’ll get 10 meatballs with a 1/4 cup, 8 with a 1/3 cup.)
Arrange the meatballs so that they don’t touch each other in the prepared skillet.

Bake the meatballs for 35 minutes. Pour the marinara sauce into the skillet,
using a spoon to cover each of the meatballs with some of the sauce
(to keep them from drying out). Continue baking for 45 minutes.
Remove the pan from the oven and let the meatballs cool for 5 to 10 minutes.

Place 2 to 3 meatballs on half of a hoagie bun and top with a dollop of sauce.
Cover with the top of the roll. Repeat with the remaining subs.

The Art of Breathing: 6 Simple Lessons to Improve Performance, Health, and Well-Being

According to the ancient Chinese discipline of chi kung (pronounced chee gung), the body's energy is released by the air breathed into it. Zi, a classically trained American singer raised in China, has adapted that idea in an intriguing method she calls chi yi. (Chi means breath, breathing or air.) Her premise is that controlled breathing can create new sources of life-enhancing energy. In six concise, uncomplicated lessons she shows how to tap into that energy through a range of exercises (accompanied by line drawings), imagery and situational applications. Her techniques for using the body's inner dynamics (the Chinese "core") will be especially valuable in relieving stress, building stamina and engaging in sports.

And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks

In the summer of 1944, a shocking murder rocked the fledgling Beats. William S. Burroughs and Jack Kerouac, both still unknown, we inspired by the crime to collaborate on a novel, a hard-boiled tale of bohemian New York during World War II, full of drugs and art, obsession and brutality, with scenes and characters drawn from their own lives. Finally published after more than sixty years, this is a captivating read, and incomparable literary artifact, and a window into the lives and art of two of the twentieth century’s most influential writers.

Improvisation

Improvisation

So, I made a weekend breakfast for my wife and my mother-in-law. My wife is delighted that I’m cooking; my mother-in-law has been caught in her dementia loop and is rereading the same page of the paper for the umpteenth time. It’s O.K., it’s just short term issues that are indeed issues; she can recall other events with great accuracy and speed. And, she appreciates my cooking, at least in the here and now.

I chose waffles. Weekends are different from our normal, be sensible, “but-yogurt-is-so good-for- you-eat-light-run-out-the-door-workday-breakfasts.” “Save the calories for the weekend”, we say, doing the unofficial weight watchers thing, counting points, saving them for a weekend splurge, saving them for now.

I use a 1940’s era waffle iron, handed down through the family, at one time belonging to my mother-in-laws sister. It’s heavy and makes perfect waffles, and not just ordinary waffles; I am, after all, an artist. Using the old iron for me was a touch of poetic synchronicity for my mother-in-law, combining the indelible memories of her past with the cloudy present. She glanced over as I pled it in and said with a grin, “Isn’t that Bessie’s old waffle iron?” I nodded and she said “That’s great! Do you like to cook?”

I made them from scratch, with organic rolled oats, a healthy dose of molasses, and a couple of handfuls of pecans. Pretty, different textures, tasty and lots of fiber for our baby boom generation dietary sensibilities.

“Something to cut the sweet”, I thought to myself, something to go along with waffles that my mother-in-law would remember and appreciate. I take inventory in the fridge seeking the perfect accompaniment. The answer of course was right in front of me, that hiding in plain sight thing. As I moved the eggs to check out what was hidden in back, I automatically set the eggs on the counter and smiled at the obvious… 3-minute eggs, a throw back to earlier times, a glimpse of familiarity, and a novelty to cap off the celebration of the weekend.

I had no egg cups, we used to serve our soft-boiled eggs in a small bowl with butter and salt and pepper. But I wanted it done like it was when my mother-in-law was cooking. Improvisation seemed to be the order of the day, and shot glasses were just the right size. No egg cups, but I have lots of shot glasses. A man needs priorities.

Breakfast is served. My mother-in-law smiled and asked if I like to cook. My wife smiles, cracks the top off her egg with a single tap of her knife, appreciating the message of the simpler time when things were different. “After we eat, I’m going to go downstairs and see if Sky King or Fury is on the T.V.” she says. I smiled and reached for the syrup, as my mother-in-law worked on her egg with the dexterity of a surgeon. “How’s your breakfast, Nonnie?” I asked. “This is good!” she said. I smiled and dug in. “Do you like to cook? “she said. “I do” I said holding her gaze, “I really do.”

Hard Boiled Men

Follow under-sexed, over-analytical university professor Dr. Benjamin Wise, fresh off a horrific break-up, on a journey to reawaken his libido. Set against the backdrop of Asian massage parlors, University hallways and West Village anarchy, Hard-Boiled Men provides an honest and hilarious account of single life in New York City. The book exposes men's secret thoughts on the nature of love, marriage, and sexuality.

Although Hard-Boiled Men is as likely to infuriate as entertain, Guy Jacobs' account of promiscuity and debauchery on the road to love speaks to our eternal quest for intimacy, home and finding out just who we are.

"Powerful, inspiring and heartfelt. Hard-Boiled Men is The Catcher in the Rye all grown up; there's a little bit of Ben Wise in every one of us." -Dr. Paul S. Lieber, Emerson College

Penina Levine Is a Hard-boiled Egg

“She still hasn’t gotten over that Easter Bunny letter,” said Zozo.
“So what?” said Penina. “If my parents want me to go to Peekskill, what can Ms. Anderson do? Kidnap me?”
“No,” said Zozo. “She can’t kidnap you, but she can flunk you.”

Penina Levine has a bossy best friend, a tattletale sister, crazy parents, and a big, fat zero on her school assignment to write a letter as the Easter Bunny. It was a stupid assignment, completely impossible, totally unfair. Penina’s never going to do it—not ever—and it’s no use telling her parents about it. They never listen to her anyway. But Penina’s grandmother does. Grandma doesn’t think Penina should do the assignment. It’s a matter of principle. It’s a matter of strength. It’s a matter of five thousand years of history and a couple dozen hard-boiled eggs.

Notes: I don't even want to think about how many calories are in this. It's two scoops of La Maison du Chocolat's signature Guayaquil ice cream with milk and who knows what else. Of course, there's whipped cream on top. That they give you a square of dark chocolate to boot is just ridiculous. You basically could run a marathon after downing this.

It's rich, thick, and very dark chocolate-y. But, it's sweet, too. It's basically a milkshake on crack.

how many calories in a pint of guinness - The Search

The Search for God and Guinness: A Biography of the Beer that Changed the World

The Search for God and Guinness: A Biography of the Beer that Changed the World

The history of Guinness, one of the world's most famous brands, reveals the noble heights and generosity of a great family and an innovative business.
It began in Ireland in the late 1700s. The water in Ireland, indeed throughout Europe, was famously undrinkable, and the gin and whiskey that took its place was devastating civil society. It was a disease ridden, starvation plagued, alcoholic age, and Christians like Arthur Guinness-as well as monks and even evangelical churches-brewed beer that provided a healthier alternative to the poisonous waters and liquors of the times. This is where the Guinness tale began. Now, 246 years and 150 countries later, Guinness is a global brand, one of the most consumed beverages in the world. The tale that unfolds during those two and a half centuries has power to thrill audiences today: the generational drama, business adventure, industrial and social reforms, deep-felt faith, and the beer itself.
"Frothy, delicious, intoxicating and nutritious! No, I'm not talking about Guinness Stout-I'm talking about Stephen Mansfield's fabulous new book...The amazing and true story of how the Guinness family used its wealth and influence to touch millions is an absolute inspiration." - Eric Metaxas, New York Times best-selling author
"It's a rare brew that takes faith, philanthropy and the frothy head of freshly-poured Guinness and combines them into such an inspiriting narrative. Cheers to brewmaster Stephen Mansfield! And cheers to you, the reader! You're in for a treat." - R. Emmett Tyrrell Jr., Founder and editor-in-chief of The American Spectator

Collins Gem Carb Counter: Ratings for Over 2000 Foods - Plus Portions, Calories, Protein, Fat & Fibre

This companion to the Gem Calorie Counter is a handy portable guide to carbohydates in everyday foods. Clearly laid-out tables give details of net carbohydrates per portion (slice, biscuit, apple) making it quick and simple to use. Reducing carbohydrates and following a high protein diet has become a popular and effective way of losing weight and keeping those extra pounds off. The key to following such a diet is to control your carbohydrate intake. In addition to the net carb contents of everyday foods this guide gives calories, protein, and fat. Information is given per portion rather than 100g, meaning that there is less working out involved. Boredom is often the downfall of the carb counter, so a section is included which gives sestions for different meals for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks.

low fat turkey meatloaf recipe - CANYON RANCH

CANYON RANCH CKNG

CANYON RANCH CKNG

The two Canyon Ranch spas are rated No.1 and No.2 (they alternate positions) over and over by readers of the Conde Nast Traveler. Part of the allure are their stunning locations -- in the hills of Tucson, Arisona, and in the Berkshire mountains in Massachusetts -- but one of the best parts of a visit to Canyon Ranch is the food.
Jeanne Jones developed and supervised the Canyon Ranch menu, and in Canyon Ranch Cooking, she offers everyone a chance to eat the spas' low-cal, low-fat delicious food. The recipes all have detailed nutritional breakdowns to help you plan a healthy meal with a lot of variety. Perhaps best of all are the tips and techniques to help enhance flavor without adding calories. Why does spa food taste so good when nearly all the fat has been removed?Jones reveals all the secrets -- such as adding citrus or vinegar to lift "flat" flavors; grilling over aromatic wood; marinating meat and vegetables; cooking at low temperatures for long periods to "marry" flavors; roasting rapidly for crispy crusts and tender interiors; using dried fruit for rich and creamy fat-free sauces; and much, much more. Try the Canyon Ranch Guacamole, Osso Bucco and Cheese Enchiladas; enjoy Chocolate Mint Cake and Cherry Streusel Pie. This is not a cuisine of deprivation -- the food is wonderful, and the recipes for making it easy and sensible.
This book can't give you a workout or a hike, but it does tell you how to plan your own spa weekend at home, with sestions for exercise, relaxation, even theme parties for special Saturday night dining. The wonderful recipes and the luscious photographs are here to delight and inspire. With Canyon Ranch Cooking, the spa comes to you.

This intimidatingly beautiful book on low-fat spa cooking takes the chi-chi out of spa food and actually makes it accessible to the average cook. Although the easy-to-prepare recipes in Canyon Ranch Cooking rely mostly on fresh produce and meats, Cook It Light expert Jeanne Jones offers alternatives to and substitutes for ingredients you might not find during certain times of the year (such as frozen berries and vegetables in place of their fresh counterparts). Also, many of the recipes incorporate carbohydrates and grains such as pastas, white and brown rice, couscous, and bulgur, which are easier to find year-round. The tone of the book is not restrictive or didactic--Jones really wishes to make the food accessible and friendly, as well as healthful--and the language used is positive and intended to empower the cook both in building a low-fat pantry and in trying new cooking methods. In addition, calorie and nutrient analyses of each dish are provided with portion sizes that are realistic and possible to visualize.
Jones sests using spices to add dimension to dishes and, from cooking a number of them, we would have to agree--main courses such as Turkey Meatloaf and Polenta Crusted Sea Bass were a little bland. However, the corn salsa that accompanied the sea bass jazzed it up a bit and made it taste both fresh and healthy. The Banana Bread and Fruit Muffins, both of which used whole-wheat flour and minimal oil, were low-fat hits with office tasters. Garbanzo Nuts, or oven-baked, spiced garbanzo beans, are the perfect mid-afternoon snack fix. The salad and dressing ideas are all zesty and quick to make, but finding the fresh ingredients could prove challenging for most of the year. With more than 200 wonderful recipe and menu ideas, the book could end up paying for itself in more healthful and flavorful meals than one could get dining out. The "Canyon Ranch Weekend at Home" ideas in the back of the book will inspire more than a weekend of pampering oneself and eating with one's health in mind. --Gilia Angell

TURKEY DELICIOUS

TURKEY DELICIOUS

My recipe for turkey, favorite! Here at home everyone loves!
Soaking the turkey in a saltwater brine produces tender, juicy meat. In this recipe our brine mixture also includes buttermilk, which adds flavor to the turkey and helps keep the meat moist.
Ingredients:

* 1 1/2 cups turkey brine
* 1 quart water
* 4 quarts buttermilk
* 1 fresh turkey, 16 to 18 lb., neck, heart and gizzard removed (reserved,
if desired)
* 4 Tbs. (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature

Directions:
In a small saucepan over high heat, combine the turkey brine and water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring often, until the brine dissolves, 5 to 10 minutes. Let the brine mixture cool to room temperature. In a large pot, stir together the brine mixture and buttermilk.

Rinse the turkey inside and out with cold water and place in a large brining bag. Carefully pour the buttermilk brine mixture into the bag. Seal the bag, pressing out the air, and place in a large stockpot or other container large enough to hold the turkey. Refrigerate for 24 to 36 hours, turning occasionally.

Remove the turkey from the brine; discard the brine. Rinse the turkey inside and out with cold water and pat dry with paper towels. Trim off and discard the excess fat. Place the turkey, breast side up, on a rack in a large roasting pan. Rub the skin evenly with the butter. Truss the turkey as desired using kitchen twine. Let the turkey stand at room temperature for 1 hour.

Position a rack in the lower third of an oven and preheat to 400°F.

Roast the turkey for 30 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 325?F and continue roasting, basting every 30 minutes with the pan juices. If the breast begins to cook too quickly, tent it loosely with aluminum foil. After about 2 hours of total roasting time, begin testing for doneness by inserting an instant-read thermometer into the thickest part of the breast and thigh, away from the bone. The breast should register 165°F and the thigh, 175°F. Total roasting time should be 3 to 4 hours.

Transfer the turkey to a carving board, cover loosely with foil and let rest for 20 to 30 minutes before carving. Serves 12 to 14.

Double Turkey Burger with Onion Rings

Double Turkey Burger with Onion Rings

I'm being a bit of a glutton here, but I'm having a double turkey burger with onion rings here.
All of this is cheaper than going to McD's for whatever I'd get there, and gets me more to eat.
Seriously:
10 ounces of ground turkey (precooked weight): About 99? (it's $1.57 a pound).
3 slices of bread: 18? (Loaf was $1.19, and I think there were 20 slices).
A whole bag of onion rings, 10-12 ounces: $1.49 (that's the whole bag, minus the six on the sandwich and the four I've eaten before the picture)
Soda, 2 liter bottle: 79?
Cheese, 1 slice: 11? (I think there was 16 slices in the pack, and I think I paid $1.79 for it)

Not factoring in Mayo, BBQ Sauce, salt, pepper, parsley, etc., because those were purchased for $1 to $2 each months ago, so their amounts are negligible. :3
Not calculating the cost of the electricity consumed, because I don't have a kill-a-watt to calc the Foreman, and couldn't calc the oven/stove if I wanted to.

Cost as listed: $3.56 :)

Tortellini and Greens with Gorgonzola Cream Sauce

Tortellini and Greens with Gorgonzola Cream Sauce
recipe courtesy Cuisine at Home Magaine

1 T. unsalted butter:
1/2 c. walnuts, chopped
salt to taste
1 c. heavy cream
1/2 c. dry white wine
1/2 c. chicken broth
4 oz. creamy Gorgonzola
pinch of ground nutmeg
1 lb. fresh arugula or spinach
1 lb. refrigerated cheese tortellini

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil for the greens and tortellini.

Toast walnuts in butter in a skillet over medium heat until golden, about 4 minutes, stirring constantly. Season with salt, then transfer to a plate to cool; set aside.

Simmer cream, wine and broth in a saucepan over medium heat until reduced by half, 8-10 minutes. Whisk in Gorgonzola and nutmeg until cheese melt and sauce is smooth; keep warm over low heat, stirring occasionally.

Cook greens in boiling pasta water just until wilted, about 30 seconds, then drain well. Bring water back to a boil; add the tortellini, and cook according to package directions; drain. Stir tortellini into the sauce and simmer 2 minutes to reheat.

To serve, divide greens and tortellini among 6 plates. Garnish with walnuts.

fettucine alfredo

fettucine alfredo

I've tweaked this recipe too to try and bring down some of the calories/fat in it. It ends up being (per 1 cup serving, without the chicken): 300 calories, 6 g fat (3 g sat), 46 g carb, 2 g fiber, 14 g protein.

The recipe didn't include chicken, I added it in because I'm a protein freak. :)

Ingredients:
8 oz uncooked fettucine
1 1/4 cup low-sodium chicken broth
4 tsp flour
1/3 cup light cream cheese
2 tbsp grated parmesan cheese
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1/8 tsp pepper

Top with:
1 tbsp parmesan cheese
2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley

Cook pasta according to directions on package.
Meanwhile, combine borth and flour in medium saucepan.
Stir in cream cheese spread, 2 tbsp parmesan cheese, the nutmeg and pepper.
Cook 2 mins, stirring constantly with wire whisk until mixture boils and thickens.
Drain pasta and toss with sauce.
Sprinkle 1 tbsp parmesan cheese and parsley.

The evidence of change

The evidence of change

All photography, writing, scrapbooking, painting, knitting, etc., can make one less than healthy. It's time to get moving!

My health partner and I are on a quest to build our health -- one day at a time -- together. I'm trying to do things in 10-15 minute increments - several times per day; not like a machine, pushing myself to my limits non-stop as I did in my youth.

Based on the "10 Keys To Healthy Aging", we are trying to change our futures through small successes . . . I've slipped -- these weights would have been EIGHT pounds, but I got off track and have to start small again.

If you are trying to get healthier too, why not join our "baby steps to health" challenge . . . what do you have to lose? Maybe a pound or an inch or two . . .

NOT AN INSPIRED PHOTO AT ALL . . . BUT I HOPE THE RESULTS MIGHT BE INSPIRED AND INSPIRING. LOL ("They say that I'm a dreamer, well I'm not the only one . . . " Lennon)

THIS PHOTO IS DEDICATED TO MY "ADOPTED" SISTER, LINDA - and me - together . . . also our commitment to discipline ourselves to improved health. We are taking the challenge . . . LET'S GO GIRL!!!

Secret #17 24/08

Secret #17 24/08

This is a hard one for me and linked to secret #9. I became obsessed with my weight and losing my baby fat, as a result I started exercising everyday (aquafit, boxing and aerobics) along with dieting.
I loved the results and started cutting down more and more on what I was eating. It ended up where all I was eating a day was a packet of these noodles, I was so pleased with the results I didn't even think anything of it. All that concerned me was the dial on the scales (even though my family had expressed their worries) The dial then started to go up even though I was getting smaller, it didn't even cross my mind that it would be muscle. I started to go swimming between classes and the result was I became ill. It started with tonsillitus(sp) which would clear up and return and it took this for me to realise how serious it had become.
I look back on pictures and can't believe how thin I was and luckily I became ill before it got to bad.
I do still diet and worry about my size (I am the biggest now I have ever been) but don't think I will let things get that bad again.

Natural Cures

Kevin Trudeau blows the lid off a nest of deception and double standards concerning general and individual health in this new book, "Natural Cures 'They' Don't Want You To Know About." Kevin has risked government prosecution to bring you the full story of an intricate conspiracy.
From the retail supermarket outlets of huge, publicly traded corporations comes processed, manipulated, engineered "food products" – produced by other wings of the same corporation. These artificial, toxic treats are then sold with the blessings of the Federal Trade Commission and Food and Drug Administration – government organizations charged with safeguarding the public good – laying the foundations for future disease and chronic ill-health for the consumer, and a guaranteed source of revenue for the medical and pharmaceutical sectors.
Kevin reveals the shocking truth of how drugs – which are being advertised directly to the consumer, pushing their use to an all-time high – are actually the cause of illness and disease climbing to near epidemic levels.
And, though it sounds dire, Kevin offers a light in the darkness and directs the reader to scores and scores of alternative therapies, medical practices, philosophies and – most importantly – potential cures that help your body regain its natural state of health and vibrancy.

“When it comes to weight loss and maintenance, diets do not work. Physician-supervised care is critical for long-term success. Much like high blood pressure, obesity is a disease caused by multiple factors, including environmental, genetic, behavioral and chemical influences. Physicians can address all of these factors, where diet simply changes caloric intake,” says Dr. Ziltzer. “By offering meal replacement foods, education on making lifestyle changes and offering strong social support, our new center helps us deliver complete care to more patients than ever.”
