Hijack me NOW!
Charlie Miller and Collin Mulliner, two cybersecurity researchers, have discovered how to completely hijack any iPhone through an SMS. They plan on releasing more details and potential how they do it later today at the Black Hat cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas.
They claim that they have the power to, using lots of burst of SMSs send to an iPhone, to completely take over the iPhone. They can then use the hijacked iPhone to send more SMSs and take control of more iPhones.
Apple have not yet fixed this rather serious security issue even though Charlie and Collin actually informed them of it over a month ago.
They have said that after Thursday afternoon (today) if you receive an SMS with only 1 single square character, it will crash your iPhone.
We suspect that Apple will fix this exploit in the 3.1 firmware update with is rumored to be released on the 1st or 2nd of September.

Ultratips for Ultrasn0w!
The Dev Team have released a post giving users of their Ultrasn0w iPhone 3G/3Gs unlock tips on what to do if they are having troubles with it. These troubles could be unusual battery depletion and avoiding the red badge that hovers above Cydia even though there are no updates to do.
-Remember, ultrasn0w works with hacktivated phones too, but don’t outsmart redsn0w into thinking you don’t need hacktivation! If you don’t plan on using an official sim, don’t activate via iTunes with such a sim. Just keep your unofficial sim at all times and let redsn0w and ultrasn0w handle hacktivation
-T-Mobile in the USA doesn’t use the 3G frequencies that the iPhones support, so turn off 3G in Settings->General->Network. (Some T-Mobile territories gracefully hand down to Edge mode, but most do not).
-Certain unofficial plans have limitations on whether you can make calls and use data at the same time. That’s not unlock-related.
-Some people have installed previous versions of ultrasn0w using non-standard techniques. While the ultrasn0w 0.9 update should have removed all previous versions of ultrasn0w, these users may have outsmarted our removal. So make sure you don’t still see /usr/bin/ultrasn0w present if you’re at ultrasn0w 0.9 (which doesn’t have such a binary anymore).
-If you don’t need or plan to update to ultrasn0w 0.9 from a previous version, you can avoid having that red badge over Cydia by removing repo666 as a Cydia source. Don’t worry, you can always add it back later If you follow us on twitter you’ll be advised of any new updates!

Fixed crashing Cydia!
Method 1: I you haven’t added any extra sources or messed around with the sources on your iPhone/iPod Touch:
1.You need to download Terminal from Cydia
2.Open it and type in su root (hit enter)
3.Then type alpine (hit enter)
4.Type apt-get remove Cydia (hit enter). A warning will come up. Click enter.
5.Type apt-get install Cydia (hit enter)
6.Type killall SpringBoard (hit enter)
7.Cydia should now open.
Method 2: If you have added sources or messed around with sources of Cydia. Or if you get this error when you do the above method:
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/rep.sources.co.il_._Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
Reading package lists…
1.Open up iFile or Total Commander on your computer
2.Go to etc/apt/sources.list.d/ where you will find all your sources for Cydia.
3.Select all of them EXCEPT SAURIK.list and move them over to your computer. Delete the versions that are on your iPhone/iPod Touch.
4.Cydia should now open up.
5.To get all your old sources back reinstall Community Sources.Hope it helps!

Windows users: Download: ClearCydiaListCache (.NET required) and unzip the files to a handy location. Run the enclosed executable and connect your device to your PC. Click the button to start the fix. A confirmation screen will appear shortly when it has finished.
Mac or Windows users: This document (PDF) describes how to fix Cydia using DiskAid for Mac or Windows.
How to JB 2ndGEN iPodTouch?
This tutorial is meant to help those having trouble breaking their 2nd generation iPod Touches. This guide is made for Windows, but the directions are similar on a Mac.
First, you must upgrade your device to software 3.0 though iTunes. Pay the $10 free to upgrade ( or find another way to get the firmware 
) and continue. If you update through iTunes then the process is expained in iTunes. If you obtain the Firmware from another source, save it in a location that you won’t forget. Go to your iPod in iTunes, hold “shift” and click “restore”. It will open a file browser window and you can upload your saved firmware. Let the iPod update. Note that your files on your iPod will be replaced. Your iTunes files will resync when the update is complete.
Next, download the latest version of Redsn0w from HERE and install it to your computer. Run Redsn0w. You will be prompted for the firmware file. If you bought it through iTunes, it will be saved where iTunes keeps its restore files. If you need to, you can open iTunes and do the “shift-click” method again. Use the path given. If you obtain it from another source, it will be where you saved it. Follow the directions in the Redsn0w program and it should be jailbroken. Have fun!
If you had the tethered 2.2.1 jailbreak, restore it to your original firmware in iTunes first. Then proceed with the steps.
Troubleshooting: If something goes wrong, RESTART YOUR COMPUTER, then retry. That is the main cause of errors. Ask me questions here after you have already tried restarting.

For T-Pot Plugin: T-Pot
1.Firstly you will need to install the Total Commander program.
2.Download the T-Pot plugin from above. You do not need to extract it.
3.Open the Total Commander program. Because this program is free, you will need to press a certain number to start the program.
4.Then all you need to do is locate the T-Pot plugin you downloaded and double click on it IN THE TOTAL COMMANDER PROGRAM.
5.It should then say something about that this directory contains a plugin and it asks if you want to install it or not. Click yes to install.
6.Once it has finished, on the third row down from the top on the left beside where it says [preload] it says [-c-]. Click on that and change it to [--].
7.On the top it should say T-PoT. Click on it and you are now in the filesystems of your iPhone/iPod Touch.

The Dev Team have released version 0.9 of their iPhone unlocker Ultrasn0w clearly to spite GeoHot for his Purplesn0w unlock that he released a few days. GeoHot claimed this unlock was much for cleaner and small than the Dev Team’s version and the Dev Team have announced that there new version is ‘nearly 7000 times smaller than it’s nearest competition (Purplesn0w)’ and they say that GeoHot should ‘ stop dicking around and look at the bootrom instead kthx. =P’. It seems like a real war has started betweeen the two!

The battle between the Dev Team and George Hotz (GeoHot) continues with GeoHot releasing his second program in the ‘purple‘ series, Purplesn0w. This is an iPhone 3GS unlock much like the updated version of Dev Team’s Yellowsn0w, Ultrasn0w.
This app only works with the iPhone 3GS and on legit-activate iPhone 3GS.
It’s not a daemon that takes any resources, and it doesn’t add a task to your baseband. It’s very close to a true unlock. All it does is patch three files, CommCenter, lockdownd, and your wildcard activation plist(which you need, activate w at&t sim first, no hacktivation support yet).
GeoHot says his payload for this unlock is radically different and much ‘cleaner’ than other sn0w products (Ultrasn0w) out there.
He also reminds as all that this is in BETA so backup first.
Here is how to do it. Remember you need an iPhone 3GS that is Legit-activated. Don’t forget to disable 3G if you are on T-Mobile
1.Add apt.geohot.com to Cydia
2.Install com.geohot.purplesn0w
3.Watch for success output in Cydia
4.Reboot, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone
You now have an unlocked iPhone 3GS.
Win95 iPhone Edition!
Someone has has actually managed to use a jailbroken iPhone with a cross-platform, out source x86 emulator and have managed to put Windows 95 on an iPhone. They used an iPhone 3G for their initial test but are soon going to try it out on an iPhone 3GS where is should run significantly better.
It was done with the help of the Bochs emulator and an original Windows 95 images.
It is running quite slow on the iPhone 3G and takes 5-10 minutes to boot up but it is working!
Push me... not!
According to Czech iPhone developer PoweryBase, Apple are starting to block push notifications on iPhone’s which have been unlocked with 3rd party unlockers such as Purplesn0w and Ultrasn0w and are using carrier that normally wouldn’t be allowed. PoweryBase are the developers of the NotifyMe application that uses push notifications to offer reminders and to-do alerts to users on the go.
PoweryBase claim that when you use Push notifications, the iPhone contacts Apple’s servers to obtain a Unique ID to make the connection for Push notifications and the server are not giving the unique ID to 3rd party unlock phones.
When the Push based application such as NotifyMe requests an ID from APNS, the server responds within a second and identifies the device with the unique token. From that point, the connection between APNS and user’s device is successfully established,” said Pavel Serbajlo, PoweryBase’s lead developer. “However, on a unofficially activated device, APNS keeps the application wait forever and does not provide any respond at all, keeping user wait infinitely or time out the connection, if the target application is capable of timing out.
PoweryBase have recommended people with unlocked iPhones to not download any push enabled appilcation until a fix is found.
Dev Team have announced on their Twitter that they are working on a fix but for now, do not download push enabled app if you have a 3rd party unlocked iPhone.

No WiFI? Apple got solution!
Apple have posted some support documents in the aim to help fix one of the wifi problems iPhone and iPod Touch users are experiencing.
Here are the symptons of the problem.
-The device shows no Wi-Fi address or Bluetooth address (Tap Settings > General > About and scroll down to Wi-Fi Address or Bluetooth).
-iPhone or iPod touch appears to be connected to a Wi-Fi network but cannot use Wi-Fi for checking email, surfing the Internet, or other data transactions.
-iPhone or iPod touch showing Wi-Fi or Bluetooth icon on device as grayed out.
-iPhone not able to pair with Bluetooth device or accessory.
-When you tap Settings > Wi-Fi and then tap ">" next to the network, no values or entries for IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, or DNS appear.
Here is a solution that APPLE said:
First, sync your iPhone or iPod touch to iTunes to backup your user information, Contacts, Calendar, and other data. Then try the following steps in order.
One
On the device, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Check to see if the device now displays the Wi-Fi address or Bluetooth address (tap Settings > General > About and scroll down to Wi-Fi Address or Bluetooth). If there is a Wi-Fi address and a Bluetooh address, then you’re done with these steps and you can resync your settings and your media using iTunes.
If there’s still no Wi-Fi address or Bluetooth address, then continue to step two.
Two
On the device, tap Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Check to see if the device now displays the Wi-Fi address and Bluetooth address (tap Settings > General > About and scroll down to Wi-Fi Address or Bluetooth). If there is a Wi-Fi address and Bluetooth address, then you’re done with these steps and can resync your settings and your media using iTunes.
If there’s still no Wi-Fi dddress or Bluetooth address, then continue to step three.
Three
1.Restore the iPhone or iPod touch software (this erases all data on the device) using iTunes (see article 305744 for additional assistance).
2.After the restore is complete, sync your previous settings (mail settings, text messages, notes, call history, contact favorites, and so on).
3.Now see if your device shows a Wi-Fi address and Bluetooth address (tap Settings > General > About and scroll down to Wi-Fi Address or Bluetooth).
If there is a Wi-Fi address and Bluetooth address, then you’re done with these steps. If there is no Wi-Fi address or Bluetooth address, then continue to step four.
Four
If there is no Wi-Fi address or Bluetooth address listed after doing the above steps, then your iPhone or iPod touch may need to be repaired. See the iPhone Service FAQ or iPod Service FAQ for additional service information.
Note: If the device shows an address in the Wi-Fi Address field and you are still having issues using Wi-Fi, refer to article 305715 for additional Wi-Fi troubleshooting tips. If the device shows an address in the Bluetooth field and you are still having issues using Bluetooth, refer to articles HT1843 and HT1664 for additional Bluetooth troubleshooting tips.
Nice percentage of Battery in 3.0!
Yet more problems for the iPhone/iPod Touch users on OS 3.0. People are now reporting that they are having problems with the percentage of their battery which is giving ridiculously high numbers (see above screenshot).
Some are claiming it happened after using a net syncing cable (unlikely) and some are saying it was after installing iElegance theme but nothing has been confirmed.
It is probably theme related though and those who are having this problem, should disable all their themes in Winterboard and enable them one to one to find the what theme cause this!

Fuzzyband for 3.0!
The Fuzzyband application has been updated to now support iPhone 3G on OS 3.0. This app upgrades/downgrade your baseband to 4.26.08 which is the one needed for Ultrasn0w to work.
UPGRADING:
Upgrading is for users that wish to remain on 2.2.1 but also unlock. Upgrading will put the 4.26.08 baseband from 3.0 on the modem so that ultrasn0w can be installed from Cydia
DOWNGRADING:
Downgrading works from any version greater than 4.26.08 (currently 5.08.01 is the newest version available, found in 3.1 beta 1). It will put your baseband back at version 4.26.08 which is the current unlockable version by ultrasn0w.
Downgrading only works on phones that have the 05.08 (5.8) Bootloader from the factory. This is a very limited number of phones that were released in the first few weeks of the 3G production cycle.
If you do not know your bootloader then you can run Fuzzyband and it will report the version number for you.
How to get it:
Open Cydia and type in Fuzzyband, it is hosted on the BigBoss repo so you will already have it.

redsn0w 3GS in July! ;)
Looks like the Dev Team could hold out no longer and have released a jailbreak for 3.0 a few days after GeoHot releases Purplera1n. This version of Redsn0w (v0.8) now support the iPhone 2g, 3g, 3gs, and iPod Touch 2nd Gen on 3.0.
Main features are:
1) Stable jailbreak tested by dev-team
2) Icy + Cydia problem solved (we think).
3) Ultrasn0w tested and working on 3gs
4) Proper kernel patches which will enable logome (after it’s updated for 3.0).
5) Mobile Substrate + Winterboard now working on 3gs.
The actual jailbreak is very easy and self explanitory. The program will tell you what to do. If in doubt, post a comment and we will help you.

The Dev-Team have released a beta of a Push Fix for hacktivated iPhones. This was not posted on the team’s website but on their Twitter. This is because it is a discrete beta and they want feedback from it.
Push Solution Test Steps

A. Get Legit Keychain Data:
*You Must Perform These Steps On A Properly Activated Device (iphone or ipod touch) with at least one working push app*
1.Unzip the downloaded zip file and copy the binary ‘nimble’ using SSH into /private/var/Keychains and set permission to 0755
2. Make sure the file “keychain-2.db” is in /private/var/Keychains and run nimble. You will see 4 files being created:
- youtube-cert.bin
- youtube-key.bin
- push-cert.bin
- push-key.bin
3. Copy these 4 files into the corresponding folder on your hactivated device.
B. Testing Push:
*You Must Perform These Steps On Your Hacktivated Device*
1.Unzip the downloaded zip file and copy the following files using SSH into /private/var/Keychains and set permission to 0755:
- inject
- nimble
2. Store in somewhere else the current “keychain-2.db” and run inject. A new keychain-2.db will be created
3. Uninstall the push app (i.e. beejive or similar) you intend to test on from your hacktivated device and reboot
4. Test youtube, reinstall the above push app and test.

2nd PURPLERA1N storm coming...
The purplera1n app has been updated. This fixes several issues such as Vista and Windows 7 not working. It also fixes teh kernel signing issues and Saurik’s vmcheck passes now paving the road for Winterboard soon!
If you already jailbroke with the old one, just run this from the pc over the top of your existing jailbreak. You will not get a freeze icon, the kernel and fixes will be updated wtihout it. If you didn’t jailbreak, now is the time as it works very well. Guide is updated for new version.
If you’re having problems such as it just hangs forever, make sure you have “purlera1n 3GS jailbreak by geohot RC23 in the application window titlebar. If you don’t you may still have an old version.

Backing Up before you 3.0?
I know it's a bit old, but if you aren't on 3.0 yet as i am not (until all my apps will be released as 3.x compatible), here's how you can make your phone "3.0 READY!" without losing some important stuff...
So Apple released 3.0. I suggest you wait a few days (or more due to SMS flaw i wrote before) before you update. Here are a few facts about this update:
1) Apt backup probably will not work reliably. Some packages are not going to install on 3.0 and I do not know if it is graceful about failures.
2) If you don’t trust iTunes backup, you should use SCP or iPhoneBrowser and copy /var/mobile/Library/AddressBook to your computer. This contains your contacts. While you’re at it you may want to copy all these:
/var/mobile/Library/AddressBook - Contacts
/var/mobile/Library/Calendar - Your calendar
/var/mobile/Library/Notes - your notes database
/var/mobile/Library/Safari - your bookmarks and cookies
/var/mobile/Library/SMS - your text messages.
3) The jailbreak is available for all models. The unlock also for all models. For older gen Jailbreak devices is called Redsn0w (2G/3G), and Ultrasn0w for unlocking 3G. For 3GS jailbreaker is called Purplera1n!
4) Some apps are still not ported to 3.0. Most apps will work. But some things that require some hacking to work will probably not work.
5) You will need to be at iTunes 8.2 to update, and iTunes 8.2 will not allow you to revert to an older version.
6) Apps that don’t work will likely cause mobile substrate safe mode to trigger.
7) SBSettings, categories, bossprefs, docs, and all BigBoss apps have been ported and tested on 3.0 b5 and should be ready to go on a proper jailbreak.
8) You should have a pwnage and quickpwn type tool updated for iPhone 3.0. The instructions and usage will be the same.
9) If you have hidden any apps using poof, sbsettings, bossprefs or such, you should unhide them all prior to updating to avoid issues. Go to settings, enable restrictions, enter a password, then disable restrictions. That should unhide all apps you care about making you update worthy in one easy step.
10) Make sure you do not “update” to 3.0 but you “restore” to 3.0. An “update” will mean you lose all your space where your jailbreak apps were installed. The files will still be present but no longer available so you just out on the disk space. Restore solves this problem.

GeoHot is probably the most popular man at the moment. Why? Because he just released a jailbreak for the new iPhone 3GS on OS 3.0 unlike the Dev Team who insisted on waiting until firmware 3.1 to release their version. It is called Purplera1n.
Here is what GeoHot says about how to use it:
Download it. Make sure you have windows(but not 7), the latest iTunes installed, and an iPhone 3GS with 3.0 firmware. Connect your iPhone normally. Click “make it ra1n”. Wait. On bootup, run Freeze, the purplera1n installer app. Hopefully you’ll figure out what to do from there.
GeoHot, or George Hotz, has even offer a phone hotline where you can call for support on the program. It is (650)265-1210. There is also an email: purplera1n.support@gmail.com
But there's always some warnings:
There are issues with this jailbreak. As exciting as it is, I recommend that you guys wait. I believe that the dev-team will release something in the next couple days that will be more solid and proper. (GeoHot is amazing, and I have nothing bad to say about him). In case you didn’t want to wait, I do have a purplera1n guide below. Here are the issues (probably not a complete list):
1) It is finicky. I had major problems running this jailbreak. First, the iPhone is put into recovery mode and if it doesn’t work (and it didnt many times), the iPhone is left in recovery mode. Most of you will have to restore to get it out of recovery mode after this. Not too fun. I will detail some steps to take you out of recovery if you cannot get things to work.
2) This is for Windows Only, but not only that, it is for 32 bit Windows XP SP2 only. I do not know anyone that has had success on Vista.
3) You must have iTunes 8.2.0.23 installed.
4) The jailbreak is incomplete. The kernel vm_mem patch is not present so Winterboard will not work as some other critical tweaks. (SBSettings does work!).
5) The jailbreak has some code signing issues. I haven’t determined what this will mean yet.
In short, the process is very easy. You don’t even have to hassle with DFU mode. Just run the tool, click a couple buttons, wait, when it’s done, you have an app on your iPhone 3gs called “Freeze”. Run that, download Cydia, reboot, and you’re done.

Troubleshooting:
I would not be surprised if you’re in this section. This process was a nightmare for me. It took me many tries and several different computers. Here are some problems and possible solutions.
Purplera1n crashes as soon as you tap “make it ra1n”. Your Apple mobile device service is not running. On Windows press windows + r and type “services.msc” into the run box and hit enter. Then locate the Apple Mobile Device service and right click, say “start”.
Purplera1n just hangs on waiting to reboot. I had this problem. Possible resolutions are: don’t use vista, use xp 32bit. Make sure iTunes 8.2.0.23 is installed. Make sure you did your reboot after install.
Can only get itunes cable not the purplera1n picture on iPhone: This usually goes hand-in-hande with the problem above. Use the same steps. Try another computer, latest iTunes etc.

Our ultrasn0w program uses the at+xlog crash as an injection vector of our unlocking payload — and it does so on the 3GS in exactly the same way as on the 3G! But this injection vector will be lost if you update to 3.1 using the official Apple IPSW, which updates the baseband. So stay away from official 3.1 IPSWs until we release the tools that let you update the firmware without updating the baseband.

Apple patching serious SMS vulnerability on iPhone
The flaw could allow an attacker to remotely install and run unsigned software code
IDG News Service - Apple Inc. is working to fix an iPhone vulnerability that could allow an attacker to remotely install and run unsigned software code with root access to the phone.
The attack in question exploits a weakness in the way iPhones handle text messages received via SMS (Short Message Service), said security researcher Charlie Miller, during a presentation at the SyScan conference in Singapore on Thursday. He didn't provide a detailed description of the SMS vulnerability, citing an agreement with Apple.
Miller is an authority on Mac OS X security, and is a co-author of The Mac Hacker's Handbook.
The SMS vulnerability allows an attacker to run software code on the phone that is sent by SMS over a mobile operator's network. The malicious code could include commands to monitor the location of the phone using GPS technology, turn on the phone's microphone to eavesdrop on conversations, or make the phone join a distributed denial-of-service attack or a botnet, Miller said
Apple expects to have a fix ready later this month, before Miller discusses the attack in greater detail during a planned presentation at the Black Hat USA conference in Las Vegas.
Despite the SMS vulnerability, the stripped-down version of Mac OS X used in the iPhone makes it more secure than computers running the full-blown version of the operating system, Miller said.
For starters, the stripped-down version presents fewer options for attackers because it doesn't have certain applications and features, such as support for Adobe Flash and Java, that hackers might otherwise be able to exploit. In addition, the iPhone includes hardware protection for data stored in memory and it is designed to only run software code that has been digitally signed by Apple.
The iPhone also requires applications to run in a sandbox, a security feature that isolates them from other applications and limits their access to the phone's capabilities. But SMS offers a way for attackers to get greater access to the iPhone's capabilities, Miller said.
"SMS is a great vector to attack the iPhone," he said.
Most often used to send brief text messages between cell phones, SMS can also send binary code to an iPhone, which then processes the code without any user interaction. Each SMS message is limited to 140 bytes, but longer sequences can be sent to the phone as multiple messages that are automatically reassembled.
This feature allows larger programs to be delivered to a phone, Miller said.
In addition, vulnerabilities found in the iPhone's SMS function give an attacker root access to the handset, Miller said. That's not the case for the iPhone's other applications, such as its browser, where vulnerabilities only give an attacker access to the application's sandbox.
"The iPhone is more secure than OS X, but SMS could be a critical vulnerability," Miller said.

3GS preparing for JB?
Remember i warned you to stay away from any updates to 3.1 if you want to be able to jailbreak or unlock your 3GS.
Well this is an additional message to all you 3GS owners that would like to jailbreak your device sometime soon, but this advice comes with a warning! A warning that if you accidentally upgrade to 3.1, you will not be able to use Ultransn0w, so please re-read and double check this warning at the bottom of this post before proceeding.
You may have read or heard about techniques to capture files during the iTunes restore process. These will be required to jailbreak your phone in the near future, most of the methods involve icky USB snoops. Well, there is an even better and more reliable method to get your hands on those lovely files.
During the restore process iTunes nicely keeps these oh-so-top-secret-files in a lovely accessible place for us to copy out and backup, that place? /tmp on Mac OS X or %TEMP% on Windows. Thanks Apple — handy!
The downside to this approach is that you actually need to go through the restore process to get these signed files, which has risks if you are anywhere near 3.1 or 3.1 beta
If you are ready to proceed and you know the risks we’ll get down to the nitty-gritty -
So during a usual recovery with iTunes, your signed iBEC is written to /tmp and during a DFU mode restore the signed iBSS is written there also. To be sure, restore in both modes one after another to be able to grab them both. You’ll need to keep an eye on the temp directory and copy it before it is deleted again by iTunes. I’m sure some nice folks will create a tutorial about this, we’ll link to the first person who makes a good one.
Should you choose to accept this mission, act fast, this needs to be done quickly! But again, always, always double check here to see if 3.1 has been released, if it has, then don’t do this.

IF YOU CARE ABOUT ULTRASN0W, BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS METHOD! Do not attempt this if you have downloaded the 3.1 beta. You do NOT WANT TO accidentally restore your device to 3.1 beta — you’ll lose ultrasn0w if you do! BE WARNED

3GS! It's NOW or (maybe) NEVER!
GeoHot Says: USBDumb your ECID Field – Do it now!
According to GeoHot, a former member of the Dev Team, has announced that Apple have apparently added a new layer of security to the iPhone 3GS called the ECID field. He recommends us all to ‘dump’ the contents of this so that we all have a copy before the next firmware comes out. Without this, you may not be able to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS in the future.

Apple has added a new layer of security to the iPhone 3GS. I mentioned it several posts earlier; it’s the ECID field. When iTunes starts the restore process, they contact Apple servers to generate signatures just for your device. It’s important you get these signatures for your phone before a new version of the software comes out. I had previously suggested doing this by dumping usb while the iPhone restores. But this is complicated.
Fortunately, the good folks at purplera1n are here for you, the end user who wants a jailbreak. Follow these instructions to generate a unique certificate for your phones iBSS. And don’t delay, Apple may change their minds. To clarify, this is instead of a usb dump. Do this, and you are good!
1. Put your phone into recovery mode and connect it to your computer.
2. Using USBView on Windows(enable Config Descriptors), System Profiler on Mac, or lsusb on Linux, read your phones ECID. It’s the 16 digit hex number after “ECID:”
3. Go to purplera1n, type it, and hit enter
4. Save the generated file for a purplera1nyday…
It is up to you to do it or not but I would recommend it because whether or not its true, inleast you will have it if it is true.
Also, Yozh from Geohot’s websites added, you do not need to actually restore to do this. You only need to go into restore mode.
To get out of the recovery mode just hold power+home it will shut off then press power it will go back to normal.

Well, let's say you want smilies on your iPhone.. do you? Of course you do :)
There is a hidden easter egg within an app on the AppStore called Spell Number (FREE) where if you write in a special number, it enables Emoji icons on your iPhone/iPod Touch.
Here is how to do it:
1.Download and install the Spell Number app (FREE).
2.Open the app and type in the numer 91929394.59
3.Quit the app and open Settings and go to General –> Keyboards and under Japanese and turn on Emoji.
You now have all the awesome little emoticons.
NOTE: You can delete the app and still keep the smilies.

So, Beta 3.1 is out, and what Dev-Team says about it?
You’ve seen us give this warning before, and there are only so many ways to say it or come up with a clever title :) But here it is: ultrasn0w users must stay away from any firmware updates past 3.0 (including today’s 3.1 beta) until we release the tools that let you update the firmware without updating the baseband. For most phones out there, baseband updates are irreversible and you’ll lose ultrasn0w.
The 3.0 jailbreak was one of those (rare) times where both the jailbreak and the unlock coincided (the only other time was 2.2). It’s important that people realize that *most* firmware releases aren’t like that, and you need to take steps (via the tools) to separate the firmware update from its included baseband update.
This warning does not apply to the iPhone 2G, which uses BootNeuter for the unlock, not ultrasn0w
