Gothic metal je podžanr metala koji je nastao početkom 90-ih u Europi kao spoj Doom metala i Death metala. Karakteristično za Gothic metal je vrišteći, dubok, oštri vokali (gotovo uvijek ženski_ nikad samo muški_ ponekad muški i ženski zajedno). Neki od gothic metal bandova su: Evanescence, Nightwish, Tristania...
Black metal je kontroverzni pravac koji uz Death metal ulazi u krajnosti izrazavanja bijesa i agresije. Inspiracija Black metal grupa prvenstveno dolazi kroz "mračnu" stranu (sotonizam, spiritizam, magija, fantazija, priroda).
Progresivni metal je žešća verzija progresivnog rocka, koja se karakterizira korištenjem kompleksnih kompozicionih struktura, neobičnih ritmova i virtuoznog instrumentalnog sviranja. Mnogi skandinavski bendovi kao Nightwish se smatraju nekom vrstom progresivnog metala, kombinirajući heavy metal ritmove sa operskim pjevanjem (popularni američki bend Evanescence je kasnije stvoren pod skandinavskim uticajima). Neki od progressive metal grupa su: Pain of Salvation, KoRn, Dream Theater...
