1950's Dining Room Furniture

The Justman Home 1960
61 Greenbrook Road.
From Norma (Justman) Greenfield: This was our house. My mother is standing in front. I think the little girl on the steps is her grand niece, Adele Filson, Molly Fitelson's grand daughter. I have other pictures of the little girl, which were taken at the swimming pool, and Mitzi (Molly Fitelsons's daughter-in-law) was visiting Free Acres at the same time the picture was taken so it is most probably of her.
The house was the last house on the left on Greenbrook Road heading to the pool. I didn't remember the house number. When my parents bought it in 1948 or 49 it was a one room shack with white siding. My parents slept in the living room /dining room/kitchen and my sister and I slept behind a curtain in the living room. They first winterized it (i.e. put in a furnace) and replaced the curtain with a wall. They added on to it in the late 1950's by building an additional 2 rooms. The rooms had new birch Weldwood paneling and had a woodsy smell. I loved my bedroom. I felt I was surrounded by the woods, and I loved hearing the songs of the Wood Thrushes in the evening. When they made the addition, my parent finished the outside of the house with the redwood siding. They also put in a brick fireplace. They loved the Maslow's house (he may have been the architect for the changes but I am not sure). They certainly were in love with 1950's modernism and I still have some of the Danish Modern furniture they bought in the 60's. Minnie Berger bought the house in the summer of 1961. (My parents sold it when I was in Mexico at the University of Guadalajara for the summer and couldn't object).
The last time I was in Free Acres was to stay with my aunt Molly Fitelson who was visiting with friends who had a house several houses down Appletree row from the Fitelson's house near the top of the hill. Our old house had always blended so well into the surroundings and there was a huge 200 year old oak tree in the back of it. My father, and Jack Fitelson's brother Nat, had build stone retaining walls which were covered with ferns, and Nat had landscaped the place with a Dogwood tree and wild azaleas from the woods in back of the house on the property. I loved everything about the house. When I got to the place where the house had been, it was totally altered. The only thing the new owners left of my parent's design was the fireplace.
Manago Restaurant
The best part of the Manago hotel was the food! If you want traditional Hawaiian food, this is the place. Just like rest of the hotel, everything was bare-bones basic and no nonsense. The dining room was about the same that I expect it looked back in 1917 with the exception of the furniture, which seemed to be from the 1950's. There was simply a menu on the wall that you looked at to order.
Each dinner came family style with a main dish and several side dishes. The perennial favorite was potato salad, which was made out of potatoes, canned tuna fish, celery, and peas. The manager told us that they liked to switch up the sides, but that potato salad had to be at least one of them because when they didn't have them one night, people got mad. So they have for both lunch and dinner everyday. The manager said they make 300 pounds a week.
Our dinner the first night was Mahi Mahi tuna, Opalo fish ( the whole thing with the heads), rice, potato salad, and rice noodles.Breakfast was your choice of eggs, Hawaiian sweetbread French Toast, and a choice of 3-4 meats: Spam, Bacon, Portuguese sausage, or ham. I tried the Spam and realized why I didn't like it as a kid either.
The food was cheap but probably the best that we had during the trip.

NY State Assembly Chamber. the fisheye effect is unintended. My lack of a wide angle digital lens (20mm=30mm) made this a 2 shot panorama with a fish eye effect. It would actually work perfectly if I shot one on the floor and one from the balcony keeping the camera level. Both were shot from the balcony creating the converging/diverging lines.

Fort York
This is a tighter view of the previous image. The green park at centre is Fort York, a battle site from the War of 1812. Briefly captured by invading US forces in April of 1813, the fort was the site of the death of Zebulon Pike (of Pike's Peak fame). The fort survived its biggest threat, however, when its friends compelled the builders of the Gardiner Expressway (the highway immediately south -- left, in this view -- of the fort) to divert the expressway and spare the historical landmark in the 1950s.
Until the late 19th Century, the south side of Fort York was actually at the shore of Lake Ontario, where the now-vanished Garrison Creek met the lake. Everything you see left of the fort in this shot is reclaimed land.

City Palace Udaipur is a palace situated in Udaipur in Rajasthan, India. Built by Maharana Udai Singh, it is one of the main tourist attractions of the city.
Standing on the east bank of Lake Pichola is a massive series of palaces built at different times from 1559. The balconies of the palace provide panoramic views of "Jag Niwas" (the world wide famous Lake Palace), Jag Mandir on one side and on the other the city of Udaipur. Its main entrance is through the triple-arched gate - the Tripolia, built in 1725. The way now leads to a series of courtyards, overlapping parations, terraces, corridors and gardens - a harmonic profusion hard to describe. There is a Suraj Gokhda, where the maharanas of Mewar presented themselves in the times of trouble to the people to restore confidence. The Mor-chowk (Peacock courtyard), gets its name from the vivid mosaics in glass decorating its walls. The chini chitrashala is noteworthy while a series of wall paintings of Krishna are on display in Bhim Vilas. There are numerous other palaces such as Dilkhush mahal, Sheesh mahal, Moti mahal and Krishna vilas - in memory of a princess of striking beauty who poisoned herself to avert a bloody battle for her hand by rival princes. Now the palace contains many antique articles, paintings, decorative furniture and utensils and attracts thousands of visitors every day. The former guesthouse of the city palace, Shiv Niwas Palace, and the Fateh Prakash Palace have been converted into heritage hotels.
The palace was also a location to film the Disney Channel Original Movie, The Cheetah Girls: One World, which is the third movie of The Cheetah Girls.

Smallest City Hall in America, Maskell, Nebraska
I was driving along Nebraska Highway 12, paralleling the Missouri River and just across the border from South Dakota, when I saw the billboard: "Welcome to Maskell, Home of the Smallest City Hall in the U.S." An arrow pointed three blocks off the highway, and it so happens that the town of Maskel is exactly three blocks long and two blocks wide. There is a Lutheran Church, a cluster of houses, and a population of 54 people.
I circled the town completely and found myself back out at the highway, but saw no City Hall. I went back and looked more carefully the second time around and found it. The small white shed-like building, 10x12 feet, was painted white. In front was a large barrel of petunias, a water fountain, and a sign which said "Wet Paint." I peered into the open front door and could clearly see that the grey floor paint inside had recently been applied. An electric fan stood in the doorway, no doubt to speed the drying of the paint. There was not a stick of furniture in the tiny building - but then it was being painted.
I walked all around City Hall, peered in both windows, and looked up and down the street. Not a single soul was in sight. I'll have to come back another time when the paint is dry. Why is it that I just love discovering places like this?

The desk was an overrun from a custom order, so I got it at a discount. The chair is new and it's the same fabric as the pillows on the loveseat.
Yeah, I know the degrees aren't quite even but that was about the fifth attempt and I had so many nail holes that I was worried about tearing the drywall. Since this is reasonably close, I let it go.

North Hampton in the Snow
While passengers have not boarded a train at the North Hampton Depot since 1965, the building itself has been treated well over the years. It is home to a local business, and while I have never been inside, I hope the interior is in as good of shape. Unfortunately not all stations on the B&M have been this fortunate.

O'ahu - Honolulu - Capitol District: 'Iolani Palace
'Iolani Palace, located at 364 South King Street, was built between 1879 and 1882 as the official residence for King Kalakaua and Queen Kapi'olani, and then late for Queen Lili'uokalani. The only royal palace used in such capacity by a reigning monarch in the United States, following the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893, it was used in succession as the capitol building for the Provisional Government, Republic, Territory, and State of Hawai'i until 1969 at which point it was restored and opened to the public as a museum in 1978.
The current structure replaced a one-story wooden building called Hanailoia built for Princess Victoria Kamamalu and purchased by King Kamehameha III when he moved his capital from Lahaina to Honolulu in 1845. During Kamehameha V's reign, the name was changed to 'Iolani Palace, literally meaning "royal hawk." The 'Iolani Barracks, designed by Theodore Heuck, were added in 1871, to house the royal guards. When David Kalakaua assumed the throne, he ordered the original palace razed and commissioned a new one to be fashioned after the modern palaces he visited throughout Europe.
The brick and concrete-faced building was designed by Thomas J. Baker, Charles J. Wall and Isaac Moore in a unique style known as American Florentine at a lavish cost of over $340,000. It measures 140-feet by 100-feet and rises two stories over a raised basement to a height of 54-feet with four corner towers and two center towers rising to a height of 76-feet. The first floor is dominated by a grand hall, facing a staircase made of koa wood, that adjoins to a throne room, a blue meeting room and a dining room. Upstairs are a private library and bedrooms. The palace was wired with both electricity and telephones, before even the White House.
Upon the overthrow of the monarchy by the Committee of Safety in 1893, troops of the newly the newly formed Provisional Government of Hawai?i took control of ?'Iolani Palace, which a few months later was renamed the "Executive Building" for the Republic of Hawai'i. Government officials auctioned off any furniture or furnishing unsuitable for government operations. Queen Lili?uokalani was imprisoned for nine months in a small room on the upper floor, where she crafted a quilt that is still on display, after the second of the Wilcox rebellions in 1895. Her trial was held in the former throne room.
The Palace area was originally enclosed by an eight-foot high coral block wall with wooden gates. Following the Wilcox Rebellion in 1889, it was lowered to 3'6". In 1891, it was topped with the present painted iron fence. The four principle gates each display the Coat of Arms of the Hawaiian Kingdom, and have a distinctive name and purpose--Kauikeaouli, which was named in honor of King Kamehameha III and used for ceremonial occasions; Kina'u, which was named after the mother of Kings Kamehameha IV and used by tradesmen; Hakaleleponi, which was named for Queen Kalama, consort of Kamehameha III and used by servants and retainers of the royal household; and Likelike, which was given the name of Princess Likelike, sister to King Kalakaua and Queen Lili`uokalani and reserved for private use by the royal family.
