From Norma (Justman) Greenfield: This was our house. My mother is standing in front. I think the little girl on the steps is her grand niece, Adele Filson, Molly Fitelson's grand daughter. I have other pictures of the little girl, which were taken at the swimming pool, and Mitzi (Molly Fitelsons's daughter-in-law) was visiting Free Acres at the same time the picture was taken so it is most probably of her.

The house was the last house on the left on Greenbrook Road heading to the pool. I didn't remember the house number. When my parents bought it in 1948 or 49 it was a one room shack with white siding. My parents slept in the living room /dining room/kitchen and my sister and I slept behind a curtain in the living room. They first winterized it (i.e. put in a furnace) and replaced the curtain with a wall. They added on to it in the late 1950's by building an additional 2 rooms. The rooms had new birch Weldwood paneling and had a woodsy smell. I loved my bedroom. I felt I was surrounded by the woods, and I loved hearing the songs of the Wood Thrushes in the evening. When they made the addition, my parent finished the outside of the house with the redwood siding. They also put in a brick fireplace. They loved the Maslow's house (he may have been the architect for the changes but I am not sure). They certainly were in love with 1950's modernism and I still have some of the Danish Modern furniture they bought in the 60's. Minnie Berger bought the house in the summer of 1961. (My parents sold it when I was in Mexico at the University of Guadalajara for the summer and couldn't object).

The last time I was in Free Acres was to stay with my aunt Molly Fitelson who was visiting with friends who had a house several houses down Appletree row from the Fitelson's house near the top of the hill. Our old house had always blended so well into the surroundings and there was a huge 200 year old oak tree in the back of it. My father, and Jack Fitelson's brother Nat, had build stone retaining walls which were covered with ferns, and Nat had landscaped the place with a Dogwood tree and wild azaleas from the woods in back of the house on the property. I loved everything about the house. When I got to the place where the house had been, it was totally altered. The only thing the new owners left of my parent's design was the fireplace.

The best part of the Manago hotel was the food! If you want traditional Hawaiian food, this is the place. Just like rest of the hotel, everything was bare-bones basic and no nonsense. The dining room was about the same that I expect it looked back in 1917 with the exception of the furniture, which seemed to be from the 1950's. There was simply a menu on the wall that you looked at to order.
Each dinner came family style with a main dish and several side dishes. The perennial favorite was potato salad, which was made out of potatoes, canned tuna fish, celery, and peas. The manager told us that they liked to switch up the sides, but that potato salad had to be at least one of them because when they didn't have them one night, people got mad. So they have for both lunch and dinner everyday. The manager said they make 300 pounds a week.
Our dinner the first night was Mahi Mahi tuna, Opalo fish ( the whole thing with the heads), rice, potato salad, and rice noodles.Breakfast was your choice of eggs, Hawaiian sweetbread French Toast, and a choice of 3-4 meats: Spam, Bacon, Portuguese sausage, or ham. I tried the Spam and realized why I didn't like it as a kid either.
The food was cheap but probably the best that we had during the trip.
