Magazine article faces competition for readers

When writing for a general-interest magazine, the structure of the text must be completely different from that of a patient guide. Now you have to compete for readers with other articles in the journal. In this case, the textbook-like systematic structure and order of things does not work at all, because such a text is boring as a reading experience.

There are many ways to add interest to a text. One way that works is to present a patient case and anchor the rest of the content to it. Abstract things are boring for the reader, they are not interesting for long. Keeping the text in the context of concrete phenomena and close to people's experience will keep them interested.

A common mistake is to include too much detail in a general article, to try to make the text factually complete. In this case, the article becomes so heavy that no one can finish reading it. It is up to the writer to decide what he or she wants to tell people and to choose only what is necessary.

Many people who write in a general writing assignments. The idea is that the text should be as neutral as possible. This is unnecessary timidity. Rather, the presence of the author's family in a generalist journal article is desirable. It is allowed to use the 'I' form and to express opinions and reflections, as long as the reader is able to distinguish between research data and the author's opinion. It is good for readers to see that the author is flesh and blood and not a distant expert sitting in his own tower.

The most important part of a text is the beginning, which either hooks the reader into reading on or drives him away after a few sentences. "'Hypothyroidism is usually caused by chronic (long-term) inflammation of the thyroid gland' is not an interesting beginning. It is more tempting to start like this: "I always remember a middle-aged woman who came to my surgery who was overweight and easily frostbitten. She spoke in a slightly hoarse voice and was slurred."

The essay style is worth a try

Essay style can be used to make any subject an interesting read. The essay can have such a lofty echo in many people's minds that it is considered a tool only for experienced writers. This is not the case. The essay is simply a writing method that anyone who enjoys writing can try out. The essay is suitably commonplace, if one considers its original meaning of 'experiment' or 'attempt' or the previously used but now forgotten term 'experiment' (Riikonen 1990).

The most important feature of an essay is that, alongside research-based data and other factual text, it always includes the author's own observations, experiences and reflections. The Finnish name suggested by the information writer Eero Ojasen (2003) for an essay is 'pohtielma'.

Often, an essay starts with a detail and then moves on to a general topic that affects many (Klinge 2002). In a medical essay, for example, a natural detail is the author's experience of a patient. This is a way of moving on to a major public health issue.

The essay is not an exhaustive overview of the subject. A good essay leaves the reader thinking. In the words of Matti Klingen (2002): 'Rather than declaring that he has dealt with a subject completely and definitively, the essayist hopes that the reader will continue to reflect on the subject and relate it to his own experience and knowledge.'

The essay is usually quite short, readable in one sitting. More information https://essayassistant.net/buy-explanatory-essay/. It is therefore well suited to the style of a journal article. A column is a sub-genre of the essay (Ojanen 2003), usually appearing regularly in a particular column in a magazine or on a website. It is usually very short and of a predetermined length.

If you intend to write a general book in a medical field, you should consider using the essay style instead of the traditional non-fiction book. The book will have a more personal feel and interest will be better maintained throughout the work as one story ends and another begins. The information is embedded in the essays. When information is smuggled into people's minds in this way, it can be better understood and remembered for longer.
