finally, i found the last piece of the puzzle, a 49mm - 55mm step-up ring, that will allow me to use my raynox macro diopter with my sigma macro ring flash on my canon G9.

Sigma produces 5 different adapters for its ring flash, from 55mm to 77mm, but the front of the diopter is 49mm. When looking for a step-up ring, I was told by various camera stores things like "no one uses those anymore," and "huh? what's a step-up ring?"

Fortunately, this set-up will work with my new dSLR (soon! soon!) ... won't need the first of the FOUR adapters, but i'll have a big honkin' lens and camera in its place.

I was bored today and decided to try and make a homemade macro ring flash for the pop up flash on my canon 550d. I made it using a toothpaste box, cigarette box, cardboard, sticky tape and tin foil. it looks absolutely ridiculous but it works. I lined the inside of the toothpaste box and cigarette box with tin foil to let the light bounce better. if anyone's interested in one, i'm selling them custom-made for a bargain price of €150. ha ha

Antique ring restoration: Customer inherited ring but had it changed to a pendant (jeweler did a poor job and put a hole and tube through the gallery but pendant never laid flat.) Another jeweler tried to reconfigure it back to a ring by soldering a plain piece of flat gold stock underneath. Customer was sick about it, and brought it to us. We rebuilt the whole gallery and shank but retained the whole top section as original, with some repair work to prongs.

The weather was hot, the creeks were spring fed and cold.
There was a BLUE MOON at this gathering! I wrote a long story about our trip, full of run-on-sentences. No names were changed to protect the innicent. All facts are just my opinions. I am not a journalist. Here is the story....

My daughter Skater (aka: Pixie, Shine, age 13) and I had a grand time at the Missouri Rainbow. We arrived Sunday June 23 and left July 3, and those were 11 magical days! Our drive in was 12 hours, and started with thunderstorms and a downburst in central Illinois that forced us off the road near Springfield. Big booming lightning! Old Mother Nature's power chords! Ba-BOOM!! Ka-Pow!!!!!

We got in about 1 am, drove right past FS road 3173 in the dark. Whoops! When we hit Thomasville we turned around and headed back north. Right exactly at 3 miles on the odometer from Thomasville there was FS #3173 off to the right. We drove on in quietly without seeing a single cop. There was the big green and yellow "Welcome Home" banner and a quiet group with a lone drummer singing and pounding out his heartsongs. We parked in the dark fog and decided to get some sleep in our old pickup until the sunrise. Just before dawn it rained hard for about 45 minutes, and that made the air smell clean and sweet! :)


We got up and meandered through the parking lot and met a lot of kind folks at the front gate. Out in the lot we met Katie and Brian and Althea (shy white Siberian husky puppy with pretty blue eyes) in the green bubbletop "Save the Buses" bus from Chicago. We also shared munchies and explored with Funky (Matt) and Shannon in the green VW camper bus, and met Victor and Kevin. At dawn we started packing for the hike in towards Kiddie Village where we would set up our camp.

It was nearly 3 miles to Kiddie Village. The first mile was dry and hot, then we started crossing the streams and it was like heaven to stop and play in that cold water. There was a steep incline down to the first stream, too steep for bikes to ride, but not too steep for horses. Spring creek was it's name, filled with tadpoles and there were lovely Spicebush and Pipevine Swallowtail butterflies hovering about the banks.

The second creek crossing had MARVELOUS sand!! SO nice on bare feet! The White Dove kitchen settled here and had the secret luxury of a hidden beautiful white portable shitter with a lid. "Pixie" was a frequent stopper at White Dove and we kept their secret close to the vest. Up the hill from the "good sand" crossing was the first clearing, a beautiful meadow with five tipis. The path here was named Hanuman Highway.

The main path crossed Spring Creek again and opened onto the big meadow with main fire circle and C.A.L.M. and good water piped from underground springs. We drank copious amounts of the spring water for 11 days with no problem. Our friend Question Mark happily spent his time filtering the water for anyone patient enough to get that extra protection. The pipe system evolved and grew with the gathering, so that eventually you were always close to a source of underground spring fed clean drinking water. We give an A+ to all who hauled pipe and ran samples for tests. GREAT water is such a luxury! :)

The next creek crossing had a pipe with roaring spring water you could shower in! Fill up the canteens! No waiting! Cold clean showers! The bridge there was called H20 bridge or Rainbow Bridge, and the crossing was called "Copperhead Crossing" after a snake was sighted in the water by some shady bushes. The original location of C.A.L.M. was to the right just after H20 Bridge. Continuing up, the main path was called Son Dance Trail and opened onto another fine meadow.

At the end of the meadow on the left side was Kiddie Village, which eventually grew to a City of Wonder! We parked our camp halfway twixt original C.A.L.M. and Kiddie Village, up into the shade of the tree line in the raspberry bushes by a big broken tree. Flattening out a place for our sleeping tent we ate juicy raspberries as we stomped. There was poison ivy everywhere so we sacrificed a shade tarp to cover the ground for safe lounging and relaxing. We set up a second small dome tent for all our gear and food and clothes and schtuff. We were on the map, had our own gnome home at home!

Pixie donated a pile of her old Golden Books to Kiddie Village. She talked with the smaller kids while I helped a crew installing support poles and guy ropes

THE LIFE OF SAINT CIARAN
The holy abbot Ciaran was born of the people of the Leinster, which are in the region of Meath, that is, in the middle of Ireland. His father, who was a cartwright, was called Beonnadus; now the same was a rich man; and he took him a wife by name Derercha, of whom he begat five sons and three daughters. Of these there were four priests and one deacon, who were born in this order, with these names—the first Lucennus, the second Domhnall, the third that holy abbot Ciaran, the fourth Odhran, the fifth Cronan, who was the deacon. Also the three daughters were named Lugbeg, and Raichbe, and Pata. Lugbeg and Raichbe were two holy virgins; Pata, however, was at first married, but afterwards she was a holy widow. Now inasmuch as the wright Beonedus himself was grievously burdened by the imposts of Ainmireach King of Tara, he, eluding the pressure of the impost, departed from his own region, that is from the coasts of Meath, into the territories of the Conactha. There he dwelt in the plain of Aei, with the king Crimthanus; and there he begat Saint Ciaran, whose Life this is.

Now his birth was prophesied by a wizard of the aforesaid king, who said, before all the folk, "The son who is in the womb of the wife of Beoedus the wright shall be had in honour before God and before men; as the sun shines in heaven so shall he himself by his holiness shine in Ireland." Afterwards Saint Ciaran was born in the province of the Connacht, namely in the plain of Aei, in the stronghold called Raith Crimthain; and he was baptized by a certain holy deacon who was called Diarmaid in the Irish tongue; but afterwards he was named Iustus, for it was fitting that a "just one" should be baptized by a "Iustus." And Saint Ciaran was reared with his parents in the aforesaid place, and by all things the grace of God was manifested within him.

One day the best horse of Aengussius, son of the aforesaid King Crimhthanus, died suddenly, and he was greatly distressed at the death of his best horse. Now when in sorrow he had fallen asleep, in his dreams a shining man appeared to him, saying to him, "Sorrow not concerning thy horse, for among you there is a little boy, Saint Ciaran son of Beoedus the wright, who by God's grace can quicken thy horse. Let him pour water into the mouth of the horse, with prayer, and upon its face, and forthwith it shall arise sound. And do thou bestow a gift on the boy for the quickening of thy horse." Now when Aengus son of the king was awakened out of sleep, he told these words to his friends; and he himself came to Saint Ciaran and led him up to the place where the horse was lying dead. When the dutiful boy Ciaran poured water into the mouth and on the face of the horse, it forthwith rose from death and stood whole before them all. The son of the king bestowed that field, which was great and the best, upon Saint Ciaran in perpetuity.

On another day the mother of Saint Ciaran upbraided him, saying, "The sensible other boys bring honey to their parents every day, from the fields and the places where honey is found. But this our son, weak and soft as he is, brings us no honey." The holy boy Ciaran, hearing this saying of his mother chiding him, made his way to a spring hard by, and thence filled a vessel with water. When he blessed it, honey of the best was made from the water, and he gave it to his mother. But his parents, astonished at the miracle, sent that honey to the deacon Iustus, who had baptized him that he might himself see the miracle wrought by God through the boy whom he baptized. When he had heard and seen it, he gave thanks to Christ, and prayed for the boy.

The holy boy Ciaran, as he kept the flocks of his parents, was wont to read the Psalms with Saint Diarmaid. But that teaching was imparted in a manner to us most wondrous. For Saint Ciaran was keeping the flocks in the southern part of the plain of Aei, and Saint Diarmaid was dwelling in the northern part of the same plain, and the plain was of great extent between them. And thus, from afar off, they would salute each the other at ease, with words, across the spaces of the plain; and the elder would teach the boy from his cell across the plain, and the boy would read, sitting upon a rock in the field. The which rock is reverenced unto this day, as the Cross of Christ, called by the name of Ciaran, is placed upon it. Now thus by divine favour were the holy ones wont to hear each the other, while others heard them not.

On a day when Saint Ciaran was keeping the herds, a cow gave birth to a calf in his presence. Now in that hour the dutiful boy saw a wretched wasted hungry wolf a-coming towards him, and God's servant said to him, "Go, poor wretch, and devour that calf." W. T. McElroy Died of Heart Failure Last Night

From Thursday’s Humboldt Daily Herald.

The community was shocked last evening to learn of the death of W. T. McElroy, editor of the Union and one of the oldest citizens of Humboldt.
Mr. McElroy has been in Wichita attending the Scottish Rite of Masons in their conclave. Dr. H. M. Webb has been with him but had left Wichita yesterday morning while Mr. McElroy waited for a later train on the Missouri Pacific and returned by way of Iola.
When he stepped from the plug he seemed in his usual health and spoke cheerfully to a number of acquaintances at the depot. He then started to walk up town and met Fred Speakman of Tyrone, Oklahoma, and Harvey Stewart. They spoke to him and Mr. Stewart suggested that he take a cab. Mr. McElroy said he believed he would and as the cab passed just then he stepped off the walk to take it. As he stepped to the ground he fell. Marshal Palstring came up just then and lifted him into the cab and took him home. Dr. Cope was called but the stricken man was in a semi-conscious condition and died within ten minutes.
Mr. McElroy had been in his usual health and had not complained of feeling ill while at Wichita. Death was caused by heart failure which attacked him after he reached Humboldt.
Word was sent to Mr. and Mrs. J. B. House of Wichita and they came over this afternoon with his grand daughter Adele House. Mrs. McElroy’s mother Mrs. McVeigh, is expected here from Larned this evening.
In the passing away of Mr. McElroy Kansas loses its pioneer journalist. Born at Washington, Pennsylvania Dec. 24, 1845 of North-of-Ireland ancestors, he remained there until 1856, when he moved to Mahoning County, Ohio, where he remained on a farm four years with relatives. When fifteen years old he went into the printing office of his Uncle Wm. Ritezel, editor of the Trumbull County Democrat, at Warren, Ohio. Here he remained through the changes of the paper and the early part of the war. Too young to enter the army he tried successive times until in 1864 he was enabled to join Co. D of the 196th Volunteer Infantry. He was in service until the July after the close of the war. He then returned to his old position in Warren, where he remained until the next spring when he decided to cast his lot with Kansas.
Arriving in Humboldt stage worn and weary he obtained employment with the Humboldt Union, then just started by Col. Orlin Thurston. The following year, Mr. McElroy with H. A. Needham, bought out Mr. Thurston. In 1868 Mr. McElroy became the sole owner and ever since he has had charge of the paper, being the oldest editor in point of service on the same paper, of any man in Kansas. Editor Rosser of the Girard Press and Editor Gilmore of the Fredonia Citizen being next in point of service.
It is hard for the younger generation to realize just what forty-five years of service in newspaper work means. When the editor of the Union began to chronicle the events of his community, Kansas was young. The state was just emerging from the hard grueling years of a war which took the best of its young men and wrung the heart blood from the women of the state! It had been born in blood and raised in poverty. The first days of the Union saw prosperity to be followed by cruel want again, as the young state passed through years of drouth and grasshoppers when the people had not been here long enough to accumulate the funds to withstand them.
For forty-five years Mr. McElroy has told of the joys and sorrows of his friends and neighbors. The writer of this can go back in the files of the Union and find the notice of wedding of his parents. He can find the few lines telling of his own birth, the notice of his own marriage, the birth of his baby boy and the sad chronicle of the death of his parents. And there are scores of men and women in Humboldt who can do the same. And each and every article has been under the supervision, if not actually written by the man who only last night passed away without for one moment laying aside the cares and trials of his duty. Such a record is one to be envied and to be emulated.
In the long course of his life, W. T. McElroy had some of the honors come to him. He had served his turn on the council, the school board, and in the Mayor’s chair. He has helped Humboldt to win the victories which have come to it, and bear the disappointments which are the share of every Kansas town. Under the Hayes administration he was appointed postmaster. Again, when in 1896, Wm. McKinley was elected president, Mr. McElroy was appointed to the office which he has held continually under Roosevelt and Taft. Had he lived out the full term to which he was appointed a year ago last May, he would have been in office twenty years. As it is, he probably held a record which has been reached by few Kansas

Well, here it is going on twenty years later & whuddaya know? Nobody took any legal action & Chris (Zardoz) didn't let this keep him from being a true Thelemite & kept his practises & initiating up until his Greater Feast April 2009e.v.

Just thought I'd post a photo of the kit I use for taking Macros, so that if anyone is interested they can see what I use.

I can't afford a dedicated Macro Lens so I've had to go down the cheap accessory route instead and to be honest, under most conditions I think these do as good a job as a dedicated lens.

All of this kit cost me well below ?100 and I would say is definite value for money.

The extension tubes are Jessops own, I got those second hand for ?15. I can use these will all my EF lenses, and used with my 50mm lens can produce slightly over 1x magnification.

The reverse coupling rings that I use to attach my 50mm f/1.8 to my longer lenses, I got off ebay for ?12 including postage. These allow me to get high magnification ratios of well over 1x.

The Macro Focusing Rail, which has been my last investment, cost me ?35 off ebay including postage. I decided to get this because it can be very difficult to focus when using the extension tubes or the reverse coupling rings. It's easier to move the camera forward/back or sideways with this kit, and it makes it a lot easier to get the focus in the right place. This also makes it easier to take shots that I can use in focus stacking software.

I've only just started playing with this software, but it has the advantage of being able to create photos with much greater DoF as it combines a set of shots taken while moving the focus backwards or forwards.
The software I have found recently is called CombineZP and is freeware.

So, it's not a pretty picture, but illustrates a short story...

My living situation is in limbo right now. I just bought a fixer upper that has no heat yet, so I've been living in the basement of some friends. Not much room, except for the boxes.

Fast forward to a promise to make a ring for a dear woman who had wanted one for over a year. Well, I looked for all my tools and could not find some pertinent ones. I tried to make due with what I had, but kept ruining the metal in some way. I contacted her and she is SO sweet about it all, I'm going to give her further discount. Yesterday, I make one last ditch effort to look through all the boxes. In the basement and those scattered in my new house. Under the bed, in closets and drawers. I am sure I lost a box somewhere. But what about those boxes that have been marked the same for many years? Okay. I look in the camping box and in the holiday box and in the Photos Maps Journals box. Wha????

Look what I found! The bench pin, for accurate sawing. The spendy anvil that will allow accurate rivets of a ring. My jewelers saw. (now I have 2) And the rest of my drill bits and tiny metal files.

Sigh. I might just have to give her the ring. :)

Now, where did I move those journals? Uh oh!

This ring's been through a lot. My parents gave it to me on my 16th birthday and I'm seldom without it. In fact, my finger itches if I take it off.

This particular creation was inspired by a gold and sapphire ring which belonged to William Wytlesey, Archibishop of Canterbury between 1362 and 1374. Jewelry was worn by all ages and genders in the middle ages, and often had functional purposes as well as decorative ones. Pieces were often ornate and elaborate, with courtly love appearing as a central theme in many creations.

Most medieval jewelry was crafted with gold and silver, decorated with colourful enamels, niello (a black alloy of silver, sulphur and lead) and gemstones. Rubies, sapphires and pearls were favourite choices, and markedly different from the faceted cuts set into jewelry today. Medieval gems were generally polished instead, creating pebble-like shapes with soft pools of colour. This cabochon cut is what gives jewelry from this period such a distinctively rustic look and feel.

While the colour of stones added to the beauty of a piece, they were often chosen for their healing or spiritual powers. This was a widely embraced part of the culture during middle ages, and something we personally embrace as we set out to craft new collections of "intentionally created" jewelled art at Alchemy Immortalis.

•) Magical Properties and Healing Powers (•

Much was written about these powers, including eleventh century references to stones such as sapphires, which were considered to possess the power to protect one against physical injury, fear, fraud and envy, and also to protect one's chastity. While sapphires were revered for their significance as a sign of peace and reconciliation, they were also thought to have the ability to promote the healing of ulcers, eye conditions and headaches. Some gemstones contained fossilized fish teeth (known as toadstones), and were also embedded into jewelry because they were thought to have similar healing powers.

You will sometimes find that stones have been drilled. This was done in the belief that it would increase the effectiveness of the stone's power.

Because of this belief in the magical and healing properties of many stones, they were often set into jewelry in a way that provided direct contact with the skin. Open-backed settings were a common feature of rings and pendants, thought to increase the effectiveness of a stone's magical or healing powers.

In addition to precious stones, other substances were sometimes used to infuse jewelry with special powers. •) Pendants (•

Pendants were prolific during the Renaissance, and again worn by both genders and all ages. Men and children tended to wear them hung on a chain around their neck, while women often fixed them to their girdles, bodices, sleeves or ruffles with ribbons or pins. Intended to hang freely, the backs were often as ornately decorated as the fronts.

Artisans of the time tended to craft pendants out of gold and enamels, generously nestled in beds of precious stones, such as diamonds or ambergris, and the naturally shaped baroque pearls which became wildly popular at the end of the 16th century.

The beginning of the sixteenth century was marked by the excitement of exploration by sea, and the wild and perilous journeys embarked on to trade with distant continents. This was celebrated in the crafting of elaborately jewelled pieces that included galleons, sea monsters and mermaids at the time.

People living in the renaissance often chose pieces of jewelry for the same reasons that many of us do today: as an expression of some unique aspect of their personality or the things they care most about. As we do now, people would sometimes choose jewelled pieces bearing an animal or symbol as a nod to some personal context or joke.

Pictures of a very old kit, never published before. The idea behind this Valkyrie-derivate was to build a non-transformable jet fighter from the base kit, e. g. a prototype. The basis for this kit was a VF-1D trainer, and it underwent subtle changes that separate this simple jet airplane from its more glamorous sisters. hence it also received a new name, 'Fylgja', a supernatural being or creature from Norse mythology like the Valkyrie which accompanies a person in connection to their fate or fortune.

Main changes include the omittance of the Battroid head under the cockpit, the respective space was closed and flushly integrated into the bodywork. Additionally, the former legs are now integrated part of the hull, the seams of the original joints were covered with putty, too. Consequently, the arms under the hull are gone, and instead the airplane's body was elongated into an aerodynamic-friendly rear end cone (inspired by the similar Su-27 tail).

The main engines were also changed - the vector thrust "feet" of a Valkyrie are gone. Instead traditional engine exhausts (from a 1:144 scale F-15) were implanted. With this lack of manoeuverabilty, two extra rudders were placed at the legs' sides (they come from a crashed transfoambel 1:100 scale Valkyrie kit), almost on the same level as the VG wings which were retained in full function.

For painting I went for a low-viz livery, which was all the rage when I built this conversion (late 80ies, I think). Most of the markings come from an Italieri OA-4M Skyhawk and a OV-10D Bronco from Airfix, Macross insignia were left away.
The edgy camouflage scheme (officially "rectilinear disruptive camouflage") was inspired by a hazy picture of one of the six F-14's which were (together with F-15s in a similar scheme) designed by artist Keith Ferris (who invented the false canopy painting!) and evaluated by the USAF and US Navy in 1977. I suppose this scheme was mainly designed to break up the airplane's outlines both in the air and also on the ground (works great against the concrete runway!), and to simply confuse enemies in air combat.

The colors on the kit were guessed from the picrture. I think I used FS 36375 (Ghost Grey), FS 36320 (Compass Grey) and FS 35237 (Blue Grey). You hardly see differences, but they match up well with the grey markings. Today I know that the Ferris scheme had more contrast (correct FS tones are 36118, 36231 and 36440, F-16 colors, plus a false canopy underneath).

Anyway, this kit is still in the official collection, even though I never could figure out what it actually could be - my final idea was/is that it could be an advanced trainer with supersonic capabilities for Valkyrie cadets, hence its fictional designation "TF-1D" and the new Flygja name.

25 January is the feast of the Conversion of St Paul. This mosaic by Boris Anrep is in St Paul's chapel in Westminster Cathedral. In Acts 22:6-16, St Paul recounts his conversion story to the people of Jerusalem:
