Impressions from Balkan Case Challange in Vienna
So, finally today I have come home to Croatia. It’s been really exciting and as well really educating week. I really enjoyed my time in Vienna. :)
Start from the beginning, I would like to apologize for not writing every day, but my schedule was really busy. I’ll try to retell whole week.
Sunday, 20th May
Sunday was our traveling day to Vienna. As we had to meet in Zageb as the whole Croatian delegation at 6.45AM sharp, Max (Martin Štokić) and I had to leave Varaždin early in the morning. First transportation that would reach our destination was train, so we went with train early in the morning at 3.57AM to reach Zagreb at 6.12AM.
We met at Zagreb train station (whole Croatian delegation with coordinator Dario Blažeković) and we went to Vienna. It was interesting trip with a lot of funny stories and from the beginning it was obviously that we were really strongly connected and that we would become good friends and enjoys our time in Vienna.
Around 2PM we came to Vienna. We were welcomed at train station and had arranged transportation to Airo Tower Hotel. After we were situated in rooms (me with my roommates Jelena Štimac from Rijeka and Lorena Barić from Zagreb), first presentation started which were about the Balkan Case Challenge project and as well about the WUS organization (World University Service).
At that point I had met my “case mates” for the first time in real – team J – Božidar Marunić from Serbia and Christian-Marian Chifor from Romania. Great guys!
Monday, 21st May
In the morning we had breakfast and after we went for a city tour. From what I have seen, Vienna is beautiful. We saw every important buildings and parks in city center and we had lunch in some restaurant near University of Vienna.
When we came back from city tour we had our ICT Q&A session.
At 7PM was the opening ceremony. Opening ceremony was held in the building of the University of Vienna which is so lovely and nice (there is a big park inside the building where students were studying). To our opening ceremony also came Ursula Plassnik, Ministry for European and International affairs of Austria.
After the ceremony we had buffet and around 10PM we came to hotel to start working on our case as the semi-finals were day after.
We worked really hard that night till almost 2.30AM.
Tuesday, 22nd May
We had free morning to work on our case and after lunch we had our semi-finals. We (my team and me) were really nervous because there were more things to work on but we just didn’t have enough time to deal with everything.
Semi-finals – we were the 3rd team in the first round and we did it very well. I was so proud of my team members because we have done great job.
In the evening we were planning to go out and just at the same moment we were going to city center, we have found out that we were in finals. Wow:) What a great feeling. We really had to celebrate so we went to some bar on Danube River.
Bar was great. Firstly we thought it was a gay bar as 2 boys were dancing on the bar, but they were very flexible as most of people were male and not interested in that guy dancing, so the girl started to dance. Music was great, Latino music and we really had great time – dancing and enjoying the Vienna night life.
Around 2.30AM we decided it would be the best to come home to hotel and our guide, Markiz, took us to taxi station. Taxi is almost not so expensive. For 25 minutes driving it was around 17 Euro, split to 6 persons.
We came to hotel around 4AM.
Wednesday, 23rd May
We had our breakfast and after that we started to work on our feedback we have received from the jury previous day so we can have everything set up in finals.
Finals were at 2PM and we were first team to begin their presentation. It was ok, there were more Q&A after the presentation than in the semi-finals but we survived.
As of the lack of sleep, I decided to go to sleep after the presentation, but the Vienna call was much louder so I decided to go to city center with my roommate Jelena. We were walking around the center and than we met Macedonian guys and we stayed in city tour with them.
In the evening we went to sleep. We were tired of walking and tired because of the lack of sleep. There was no information about the results of the competition.
Thursday, 24th May
In the morning there was Job Fair for BCC students. Mostly there were Austrian companies. I was talking with few managers from the firms. Who knows, next year maybe I’m going to work in Vienna.
At 4PM sharp started the closing/award ceremony. First they announced the winners of Business case study and Croatian delegate Vanco Balen and his team took the first place :)
After the Business came Low moot court and the winners were team where was also our good friend from Macedonia, Bosko Stankovski.
After the Law moot court was the announcement of ICT competition. Our delegate, Slaven Žilić and his team took the 3rd place. Slaven also won the prize of the best consultant. 2nd place were some other team and I was really nervous about hearing the news for the first place, because, there were 4 teams in the finals and only 3 prizes. Our ICT coordinator announced the great news that we were the winners. So, Božidar, Christian and I won the 1st prize. :) What a feeling. As the Robert (ICT coordinator) said for our case-solution: Too good to be true.
Also, Croatia had the winner at Model United Nations. It was Duje Prkut.
In the evening we had our closing party. It was in Cafex bar and party was great.
Friday, 25th May
Departure day. Everyone’s feeling sad because BCC is over and everyone’s preparing for leaving. Jelena, Lorena and I went for the last time in city center to buy some stuff and to visit Hundertwasser place.
At 3PM we were leaving the Airo Hotel and at 4PM our train was leaving Vienna.
Photos will be available soon!!!

Obavijest o školarini :)
Pozdrav svima!
Upravo sam primila obavijest da mi je dodijeljena školarina u iznosu od US$10 000. Pošto je fee za UpWithPeople program US$11 800, trebam još skupiti US$1800.
Ne mogu vam opisati koliko sam sretna!! A i još sam uvijek u šoku.
Sada su definitivno jako velike mogućnosti da u 7. mjesecu pakiram kofere i idem na put. Hvala Vam UpWithPeople!
