Mješavina post Korn alternativne metal glazbe, neo-shock rock glazbe nalik na Marilyna Mansona i rap-metal glazbe pomogla im je da postanu jedan od najpopularnijih bendova takozvane nu metal eksplozije kraja 90-tih. Tome je pridonio teatralan izgled kojim su plijenili pažnju: uvijek su nastupali u industrijskim postrojenjima noseći ručno izrađene maske za noć vještica. Kada se tome pridoda misteriozna anonimnost, stihovi prepuni nihilizma i tamne strane života, uspjeh im je bio zagarantiran. Slipknot su osnovani krajem 1995. u gradiću Des Moinesu u Iowi. Nakon nekih manjih previranja u početnoj postavi bend se napokon zaustavio na devet članova: DJ Sid Wilson #0 , Bubnjar Joey Jordison #1 , Basist Paul Grey #2 , Perkusionist Chris Fehn #3 , Gitarist James Root #4 , Sempler/Promamer Craig Jones #5 , Perkusionist Shawn «Clown» Crahan #6 , Gitarist Mick Thompson #7 i Frontmen Corey Taylor #8.
Na noć vještica 1996. Slipknot su samostalno objavili album «Mate. Feed.Kill.Repeat». 1997. potpisali su ugovor s etiketom Roadrunner Records. U suradnji s producentom Rossom Robinsonom Slipknot su 1999. objavili svoj debi album pod nazivom «Slipknot». Postepeno su pridobivali publiku svirajući na turnejama, između ostalih i na Ozzfest ljetnoj turneji. Na live nastupima svirali su s takvom žestinom da je Crahan dva puta razbio glavu na vlastitim instrumentima. Pjesme «Wait and Bleed» i «Spit It Out» mogle su se često čuti na radio postajama. U proljeće 2000. Slipknot su dostigli platinastu nakladu sa svojim albumom. 2001. uslijedio je album «Iowa», nakon kojeg su krenuli na turneju Ozzfest. Poslije turneje Slipknot su uzeli manju stanku jer su članovi benda radili na nekim drugim projektima sa strane. Bend je pokrenuo i vlastitu etiketu Maggot Recordings. U međuvremenu se Wilson angažirao kao DJ pod imenom DJ Starscream, a Root i Thompson su radili na solo karijerama. Bubnjar Jordison svirao je bubnjeve u bendu Rejects, a Taylor je započeo suradnju s bendom Superego i surađivao na soundtracku blockbustera «Spider-Man» iz 2002.Nakon jednogodišnje stanke Slipknot objavljuje svoj ćetvrti album «Vol. 3 – The Subliminal Verses» na kojem su malo i promijenili vrstu metala koji so do tada svirali, to možemo vidjet po pjesmama kao što su Circle, Vermilion Pt.2.
ZANIMLJIVOSTI: Corey Taylor na svojoj masci ima prave dreadlockse. Pošto ih je svaki put prije nastupa morao provlačiti kroz rupe na masci jednom mu je jednostavno dojadilo pa ih je prerezao i zašio na masku! Prije izvođenja pjesme Surfacing cijeli stadion se morao derati «Fuck Fred!!!» zato sto je Fred Durst uvrijedio Slipknot i njegove fanove! Pjesma Purity koja je cenzurirana temelji se na dogadaju koji NIJE istinit već ga je izmislio crimescene.com! Dj Sid je na jednom koncertu slučajno pao na neku djevojku i kad je to shvatio, prema rjecima novinara, zagrlio ju je i poceo plakati dok joj se je ispricavao. Neki su fanovi osudili te suze dok je ozlijeđena djevojka izjavila da je to i ocekivala od njezinih "ljubimaca"!
