The Journey is back in a big way in FIFA 19
The FIFA 19 presentation focused on the acquisition of Champions League rights, the securing of Ronaldo‘s face for the cover, Ultimate Team, and the continued expansion of rights to women’s teams. There was barely a mention of gameplay at all — but we sat down with a FIFA 19 producer and had a few matches, so here’s the skinny.
The company demonstrated a host of changes to the gameplay, all of which add an extra dimension to both attacking and defending, and in this article, we shall outline the major changes found in FIFA 19 that concern the overall gameplay experience. The ever-popular FIFA Ultimate Team gets an incremental update, which includes a brand-new Division Rivals mode along with the influx of FUT Icons.
The Icons concept replaced the earlier 'Legends' that had featured in previous instalments and the players became available in Ultimate Team, meaning squads could now blend the past and present. My main issue with FIFA 19 is something I referred to earlier. You’ll notice an interface which has barely been changed bar a minor lick of paint, and you’ll notice a game which, on the surface, appears to be a slight upgrade.
The Journey is back in a big way in FIFA 19. Not only does it let you play as Danny and Kim in addition to Alex, it is also the conclusion to the story first started in FIFA 17. There's still major choices and key decisions to make, as well as hidden objectives to complete and awesome rewards to earn.
The mode that most consistently drew me back to hone a technique or learn a new one was, again, Ultimate Team. It’s the best introduction to the franchise’s staggering depth of teams, leagues and players from all over the world, which would otherwise go unknown in a career spent with the elite teams of more recognizable leagues. Still, the mode is largely unchanged in what it offers, with the newest addition being the “Division Rivals” section that offers weeklong campaigns against users of similar skill.
