ELASTOMERIC CHECK VALVE : ELASTOMERIC CHECK

ELASTOMERIC CHECK VALVE : ELECTRIC ACTUATED BALL VALVE

Elastomeric Check Valve

elastomeric check valve

    check valve
  • A valve that closes to prevent backward flow of liquid

  • Limits the flow of gas to one direction only. Use a check valve between the bubbler and generator to prevent unwanted pressure build up in the generator, and a safety against a low level bubbler. A check valve, such as used on torches, is recommended.

  • A valve which will allow water to pass in one direction but will close and prevent flow (backflow) in the opposite direction.

  • A check valve, clack valve, non-return valve or one-way valve is a mechanical device, a valve, which normally allows fluid (liquid or gas) to flow through it in only one direction.

    elastomeric
  • An elastomer is a polymer with the property of viscoelasticity (colloquially "elasticity"), generally having notably low Young's modulus and high yield strain compared with other materials.

  • (elastomerically) In an elastomeric way

  • (elastomer) any of various elastic materials that resemble rubber (resumes its original shape when a deforming force is removed)

Stanley Steamer

Stanley Steamer

Early Stanley cars had light wooden bodies mounted on tubular steel frames by means of full-elliptic springs. Steam was generated in a vertical fire-tube boiler, mounted beneath the seat, with a vaporizing gasoline (later, kerosene) burner underneath. The boiler was reinforced by several layers of piano wire wound around it, which gave it a strong, yet relatively light-weight, shell. In early models, the vertical fire-tubes were made of copper, and were expanded into holes in the upper and lower crown sheets. In later models, the installation of a condenser caused oil-fouling of the expansion joints, and welded steel fire-tubes were used instead. The boilers were safer than one might expect – they were fitted with safety valves, and even if these failed, a dangerous overpressure would rupture one of the many joints long before the boiler shell was in danger of bursting, and the resulting leak would relieve the boiler pressure and douse the burner with little risk to the occupants of the car. There has never been a documented case of a Stanley boiler exploding in use.[

Essolene visible gas pump - Forest, VA

Essolene visible gas pump - Forest, VA

Visible gas pumps first appeared around 1915, and went out of use in the 1930's. This particular pump is located at Rick's Antiques in Forest, Virginia.

"Essolene" was a special motor fuel introduced by Esso in 1933, advertised as containing an additive that guaranteed smoother engine performance. The ads claimed that this gasoline contained a proprietary "special solvent oil that cleans valve stems, piston rings, and piston-ring grooves". Esso's 1933 ads proclaimed: "Make one simple, convincing test -- try Essolene once in your car, under any conditions you choose. Essolene will speak for itself." I would appreciate hearing from anyone having further background on what this special solvent additive was, and how effective it was. Essolene seems to have been marketed only during the decade of the 1930s.

This vintage pump was moved to this site from another location, to serve as part of the outdoor display at Rick's Antiques (a "vintage Esso service station" motif). It is possible that the body of the pump and the Essolene globe on top might have come from different locations.

With visible pumps, gasoline was pumped from underground tanks into the visible glass cylinder at the top of the pump. The operator watched the level of gas in the cylinder and stopped the flow when the gas reached the desired gallons. There were three different mechanisms for drawing the gas from the underground tank into the overhead glass cylinder: manual hand operated, electric motor-driven, or air-operated. Once in the glass cylinder, the gas seems to have flowed by gravity into the car's gas tank, controlled by the nozzle seen on the right of this pump.

Many states banned visible pumps because of fire hazards and inaccurate measurements. Clock meter pumps replaced visible pumps in the 1930s.

My first car was a 59 Prefect, so this is a favourite shot, in spite of being a poor photo.
Though nostalgia didn't prevent me from remembering what a terrible car it was to drive. 3 speed gear box with no syncromesh between 1st and 2nd. 36 bhp 1172cc side valve engine gave a 0 to 60mph time of about 35 seconds. Not that you ever did it; anything over 50 was scary!
And the windscreen wipers - no electric motor, they were operated by a vacuum pump which worked best when the car was stationary. as it accelerated, so they slowed down...

H.M.S. Thunderer in 1904

H.M.S. Thunderer in 1904

HMS Thunderer was a British Royal Navy Devastation-class battleship and an ironclad turret ship designed by Edward James Reed with revolving turrets, launched in 1877. The new innovations introduced on these ships led to them being regarded with some suspicion, and this was partly justified when two unfortunate incidents clouded the initial success of the design.

On 14 July 1876 shortly after completion she suffered a disastrous boiler explosion which killed 45 people when one of her eight 30 pound per square inch (210 kPa) box boilers burst as she proceeded from Portsmouth Harbour to Stokes Bay to carry out a full power trial.

The explosion killed 15 people instantly, including her captain who was in the boiler room at the time and injured around 70 others, of whom 30 later died. The reason for the explosion was that the pressure gauge was broken and the safety valves had seized through corrosion. The boiler explosion signalled the end of box boilers in favour of the Scotch cylindrical type, and it led directly to the writing of the first official Steam Manual in 1879.

Thunderer suffered another serious accident in January 1879 when the left 12-inch (305 mm) gun in the forward turret exploded during practice firing in the Sea of Marmora killing 11 and injuring a further 35. The reason for this accident was that the muzzle-loading gun had been double loaded following a misfire, and was a major reason for the Royal Navy changing to breech loading guns. It led to improved loading and handling procedures, and Thunderer herself was re-equipped with long-calibre 10" breech-loaders, and settled down in her old age to become a favourite of the Fleet: King George V served in her for a while as Lieutenant Prince George of Wales. With her broad beam she was a fine gun-platform, and the phrase "As steady as the old Thunderer" was high praise for any newcomer to the Navy.

She was refitted in 1881 and equipped with triple expansion engines, which roughly halved her coal consumption at 80% power (and thus doubled her range), paving the way for the widespread introduction of these engines in the Royal Navy.

Further extensive modifications were carried out in 1890-1892. and she was decomissioned and sold for scrap in 1909.

NYC - Central Park: Sheep Meadow

NYC - Central Park: Sheep Meadow

Today the Sheep Meadow is a 15-acre, lush, green meadow for relaxing and admiring one of New York City's greatest skyline views. But it began less placidly — at least in concept. One of the conditions for entries in the 1858 Central Park design competition was the inclusion of a parade ground for military drills. Olmsted and Vaux included the parade ground in their design only reluctantly. The Park Commissioners were soon won over to their point of view, however, agreeing that military use conflicted with the vision of a quiet and serene atmosphere.

The sheep and a shepherd were housed in a fanciful Victorian building — part of what is now the Tavern on the Green restaurant — on the western perimeter of the Park. The flock of pedigree Southdown (and later Dorset) sheep inhabited the meadow from 1864 until 1934, when the sheep were transferred to Prospect Park in Brooklyn and the sheepfold became a restaurant.

In the 1960s and the 1970s thousands of people were attracted to Sheep Meadow for large-scale concerts. The first landing on the moon was televised to a large crowd in the meadow on July 20, 1969. These events, and the lack of maintenance, severely eroded the lawn. Sheep Meadow was the first area in Central Park to be restored. It reopened in 1981 as a swath of green dedicated to sunbathers, picnickers, and kite flyers. In November 2000, the Conservancy began the installation of a new irrigation system whose design incorporated the latest technology. Quick-coupler valves for hand watering are located at strategic points; 3,000 feet of irrigation main and 15,000 feet of lateral pipe were also put in to support 300 sprinkler heads. The project was completed in 5 months, and Sheep Meadow reopened in April 2001.

On the northern edge of Sheep Meadow, just outside its fence, is Lilac Walk. Along the walk are 23 varieties of lilacs from around the world. The Center Drive, slightly further on, offers volleyball and the "skate circle" — the setting for serious roller-skating and disco skating.

Central Park was designated a scenic landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1974.

SHOWER DIVERTER VALVE : SHOWER DIVERTER

Shower Diverter Valve : Solenoid Valve Diagram : Legend Ball Valves.

Shower Diverter Valve

shower diverter valve

    shower diverter
  • Shower control that will ‘divert’ the water flow to additional handsets, body jets or (like you see in many hotels) to a bath filler.

    valve
  • a structure in a hollow organ (like the heart) with a flap to insure one-way flow of fluid through it

  • A device for controlling the passage of fluid through a pipe or duct, esp. an automatic device allowing movement in one direction only

  • A cylindrical mechanism in a brass instrument that, when depressed or turned, admits air into different sections of tubing and so extends the range of available notes

  • A membranous fold in a hollow organ or tubular structure, such as a blood vessel or the digestive tract, that maintains the flow of the contents in one direction by closing in response to any pressure from reverse flow

  • device in a brass wind instrument for varying the length of the air column to alter the pitch of a tone

  • control consisting of a mechanical device for controlling the flow of a fluid

The diverter valve of my shower started making a funny noise when I opened & closed it. When I opened it up I found this old brass screw. I've had to replace the valves on the shower many times, hopefully with this screw out of there, they won't get mucked up so quickly.

Completely rebuilt my E-61 machine. The heating element blew out and I decided to replace all the gaskets, water level sensor and overhauled all the brew head components (springs, etc.). I also added a brew pressure gauge and replaced the solenoid valve. The front steel plate was sanded and polished because of scratches, but now lost its mirror finish. I actually prefer the matte finish now.

Never never NEVER buy Toro brand for sprinkler stuff. It's crap stuff. I had a busted solenoid a few months back, could NOT find a new one, even at the company's website, because these valves are discontinued. Now the other ones are leaky, after a mere two years installed. What utter shite.

VACUUM SAFETY VALVE : SAFETY VALVE

VACUUM SAFETY VALVE : HIGH PRESSURE HIGH TEMPERATURE VALVES

Vacuum Safety Valve

vacuum safety valve

    safety valve
  • A valve opening automatically to relieve excessive pressure, esp. in a boiler

  • A means of giving harmless vent to feelings of tension or stress

  • The safety valve is a provision in the Sentencing Reform Act and the United States Federal Sentencing Guidelines that authorizes a sentence below the statutory minimum for certain nonviolent, non-managerial drug offenders with little or no criminal history.

  • A safety valve is a valve mechanism for the automatic release of a substance from a boiler, pressure vessel, or other system when the pressure or temperature exceeds preset limits. It is part of a bigger set named pressure safety valves (PSV) or pressure relief valves (PRV).

  • a valve in a container in which pressure can build up (as a steam boiler); it opens automatically when the pressure reaches a dangerous level

    vacuum
  • clean with a vacuum cleaner; "vacuum the carpets"

  • void: an empty area or space; "the huge desert voids"; "the emptiness of outer space"; "without their support he'll be ruling in a vacuum"

  • A space entirely devoid of matter

  • A space or container from which the air has been completely or partly removed

  • the absence of matter

  • A gap left by the loss, death, or departure of someone or something formerly playing a significant part in a situation or activity

Barry Island 45690 Leander July 1968

Although I'd rather be taking photos of this engine working at the Great Central here it is at Woodham's scrapyard in Barry South Wales 40 years ago. Note how complete engines were then - it still carries its vacuum ejector, safety valves and mechanical lubricator - even after 4 years in the scrap line.

The white wall tends to detract from the view of Jubilee Class 4-6-0 45690 Leander but I believe it was actually a remnant of the old Barry Railway loco works. This was the first time I had knowingly seen a Jubilee and its sleek lines impressed me as they still do.

Built by the LMS in 1936 45690 was withdrawn from Bristol Barrow Road shed in 1964 & spent 8 years at Barry before purchase & preservation. After spells at Dinting & the Severn Valley Railway it is now based at the East Lancs Railway at Bury. It will be one of the stars of the Great Central Railway's October Steam Gala at Loughborough this year.
