The confluence of dynamic and dedicated women at Gandhi’s ashrams

The writer is a former director of the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti, New Delhi. He sees his conduct as wrong, which leads him to think of the general condition of women, and the subordinate position to which women are forced into in Indian society. I often hear from young people they do not like Gandhi because "he was very cruel to his wife". We have had numerous bickerings, but the end has always been peace between us. Through the pages of his autobiography, we see the blossoming of a teenage girl into a woman with a "mind of her own". Horace Alexander, among other things, wrote: "The biggest stumbling block of appreciation of the East comes from the belief that Eastern people have not learnt the same reverence for women as we have now begun to learn in the West. "Her determined submission to my will, on the one hand, and her quiet submission to suffering my stupidity, on the other, ultimately made me ashamed of myself and cured me of my stupidity in thinking that I was born to rule over her; and in the end she became my teacher in non-violence. How did they get to know about it? They have no answer.Gandhi has acknowledged the debt of his mother, wife, the black women in South Africa and the suffragette struggle of British women in 1906-1907 as influences on the evolution of his concept of satyagraha for which he is revered across the world. In his later life he was "ashamed for this attachment". Gandhi was overwhelmed at the grit and determination displayed by women in their fight for rights in South Africa. He describes this incident thus:  "The tears were running down her cheeks in torrents and she cried, have you no sense of shame? Must you so far forget yourself? Where am I to go? I have no parents or relatives here to harbour me.The confluence of dynamic and dedicated women at Gandhi’s ashrams, presided over by "Ba", made them develop into centres for rural regeneration and self-reliance. The incident provides him with a reformist impulse as strong as the one that accompanied his ejection from the first class compartment of a train in South Africa. Then she retaliates and a repentant Mahatma goes over the entire politics of BARRIER manufacturers the man-woman relationship. It is said behind every great man there is a woman, in the case of Mahatma Gandhi by his own admission it was his wife Kasturba. Above all, South Africa brought Kasturba to the forefront.    It is amazing how some deep-rooted misconceptions about the personal relationship between Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba have prevailed and survived from the very beginning of their public life. She was the silent but strong presence who helped him forge his unique, unconventional ammunition for the attainment of swaraj — both personal and political. Kasturba entered his life at a very tender and impressionable age.Gandhi made his inner sentiments public in an age when such confessions were frowned upon. "In spite of his having been such a little tyrant with his wife as a boy and as a young man, he had also come to have a great respect for women. A small cottage made of bamboo and mud was erected for him. Then there follows a violent conflict between the two.  The quarrel reaches its peak with Gandhi asking his wife to quit the marriage. And if Gandhi managed, in the initial years of marriage, to fit the stereotype of the "tyrannical husband", during the thirties and after, he looked up to Kasturba as a strong life-partner, without whose constant support, his "mission would have been left unaccomplished". The guru does not lead nor set the pace; he is submerged in the caring husband.

The act was tantamount to a criminal offence

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) and other student bodies have been protesting against the move, saying the administration is closing down "democratic spaces".Former JNUSU president N Sai Balaji said the circular aimed to "implement curfew timings, which the draft Inter-Hall Administration circular talks of through back hand". The act was tantamount to a criminal offence of "damaging public/university property and investigations are on to find out the culprits", the circular added. The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration on Sunday said they had not "permanently closed down the Parthasarathy Rock" area on the campus. Some miscreants had broken open the lock and uprooted the iron gate on the intervening night of October 19-20, the circular said. All members of the JNU community will be allowed into this area during the said hours on production of their identity cards, it said, adding that the current arrangements will remain in force until further notice."It is a grand design to loot, disrupt and control JNU and its students," Balaji said."The cost of the contract for 470 guards was Rs 17 crore, which is the same amount the VC is paying for the new company of 270 guards only," he added. "No such decision has been taken and a lock was temporarily put up on the gate at the time of some repair work," the officer said in a circular. This is 200 less than the earlier number. The VC hired a company with 270 security guards. This was done Gate operator intentionally to put JNUs security under comprise and use it as a pretext to curb freedom of movement, he alleged. On Sunday, the chief security officer of the university said it was a "rumour".."This is to bring to the notice of the JNU community that the Parthasarathy Rock area has been found to be misused sometimes and that includes alcohol abuse and physical scuffles, and more recently, unauthorised outsiders have entered the premises," the circular said.In order to maintain safety and security for the JNU community, the Parthasarathy Rock area will remain open from 5:30 am to 7:30 pm, it added

The government said it would allocate funds to maintain

As the sun began to set on the crumbling ruins, activists and residents flocked to the replica Ishtar gate at the sites entrance to celebrate what they called a historic moment. This was exacerbated during the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 when US and Polish troops stationed nearby and built their military base on top of the Babylonian ruins. It would allow for further exploration and research, said Makki Mohammad Farhoud, 53, a tour guide at the site for more than 25 years, noting that only 18% of it had been excavated. The government said it would allocate funds to maintain and boost conservation efforts. Iraq is replete with thousands of archaeological sites, many of which were heavily damaged or pillaged by Islamic State during its Door Openers barbaric three-year-rule which ended in 2017. "Babylon is the blood that runs through my veins, I love it more than I love my children," he said..Visitors can stroll through the remnants of the brick and clay structures which stretch across 10 square kilometres, and see the famed Lion of Babylon statue, as well as large portions of the original Ishtar Gate. The site is in dire need of conservation, Farhoud said. This is very important, because Babylon will now be a protected site," said Marina al-Khafaji, a local who was hopeful the designation would boost tourism and the local economy.DECADES OF NEGLECTExcavations of what was once the largest city in the world, began in the early 19th century by European archaeologists, who removed many artefacts.

The vote, at a UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting in Azerbaijans capital Baku, made the ancient Mesopotamian city on the Euphrates River the sixth world heritage site within the borders of a country known as a cradle of civilization.Iraq: The ancient city of Babylon, first referenced in a clay tablet from the 23rd century BC, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Friday, after a vote that followed decades of lobbying by Iraq. The other five World Heritage Sites are the southern marshlands, Hatra, Samarra, Ashur and the citadel in Erbil, the capital of Iraqs Kurdistan Region. In the 1970s, under President Saddam Husseins restoration project, the southern palaces walls and arches were shoddily rebuilt on top of the existing ruins, causing widespread damage. Its hanging gardens were one of the seven ancient wonders of the world, commissioned by King Nebuchadnezzar II.Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi also welcomed the news. Many inscriptions written by soldiers can still be seen on the ancient bricks. Babylon, about 85 kilometres (55 miles) south of Baghdad, was once the centre of a sprawling empire, renowned for its towers and mudbrick temples.Iraqi President Barham Salih said, the city, now an archaeological ruin, was returned to its "rightful place" in history after years of neglect by previous leaders.Unlike three other World Heritage sites in Iraq, UNESCO did not designate Babylon as one in "in danger" after objections from the Iraqi delegation. "Mesopotamia is truly the pillar of humanitys memory and the cradle of civilization in recorded history," he said

The boat was in good shape and I had enough rations

Since it was a back injury I had to be very careful not to worsen the injury since an aggravation could have led to paralysis.Photo: Abhilash TomyCorrespondent: What are your future plans?Abhilash Tomy: In the immediate future, I want to get fit.The storm raged on outside. He is the only Indian to complete solo, non-stop circumnavigation of the globe in 2012-13 onboard the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Mhadei and has covered 53,000 nautical miles under sail. At the same time, Gregor rigged a temporary mast and headed to me. Still recovering from the ordeal, the Navy officer, in conversation with this correspondent shares his journey of once-in-a-lifetime experience and his future plans. Finally, it was Osiris that picked me and took me to Amsterdam Island. Any specific reason for the replica?Abhilash Tomy: I was keen to build a boat in India and the only design that was approved for fresh construction was a Suhaili replica since that was the original race winner. But in addition to the damage that the boat sustained, I also suffered a back injury which confined me to the bunk. Have you recovered from them?Abhilash Tomy: The process of recovery is on.

This is a paradigm shift in the China Door Openers way around the world races are conducted these days where technology makes racing expensive and money becomes a deciding factor in the outcome. The boat was in good shape and I had enough rations.Mumbai: Commander Tomy, a 39-year-old Indian Navy pilot and a determined sailor, was the only Asian to have participated in the Golden Globe Race 2018, which entailed a solo circumnavigation of the globe in a non-motorised sailboat. Correspondent: You had suffered injuries during your sail. I was one of the few who headed west looking for winds, and I crossed the equator on August 2, 2018.Gregor, who was behind me was rolled and dismasted. I was 10th when I crossed the gate. So we relied on the stars and sun and moon to navigate. Tomy has also represented India in the 2011 Cape Town to Rio Race, the Spanish Copa del Rey Race in 2014 and the Korea Cup for two years in succession.Due to fact that I had headed West, I had managed to avoid the St Helena high which becalms seas. Thats what happened to me too. Loic ran out of the water and stopped at Cape Town and he was shifted to Chichester Class. I wasted no time and applied to the race. The Australians, who are responsible for rescue coordination in that area, quickly mobilised a French fisheries patrol vessel called Osiris to come to my rescue.I could not get up and feed myself, nor could I pour myself any water. I had moved up to 5th position.Suhaili was built on a 1923 design by William Atkins called Eric 32.Photo: Abhilash TomyCorrespondent: How does it feel to be the only Asian to compete in the race?Abhilash Tomy: There were two other Asians. Ertan was of Turkish origin but a British citizen. Cdr.It was really an honour to know that you are the only one from Asia to compete in the race. I had to relearn celestial navigation so that I could navigate without a GPS.I liked the fact that the race was going retro restricting technology to pre 1968. We were on boats that were between 32- 36 feet and of traditional design and construction. I had to call for rescue. Correspondent: When your yacht was hit by the storm, how did you survive those three days?Abhilash Tomy: The boat was dismasted and I suffered a severe back injury which left me immobilised until rescue came which happened three days later. I can walk and sit and stand on my own and even climb stairs. I dont remember being dead. The Suhaili was built in Mumbai.
