Tamil Nadu was the first state in the country to introduce cheap meal for the poor on February 24, 2013, named as Amma Unnavagam offering dishes at very low prices such as Rs 1 for an idli, Rs 5 for a plate of sambar rice and Rs 3 for a plate of curd rice.The “Aahar” scheme in Orissa ensured cheap meal comprising rice, dalma (a mix of dal and vegetables) and pickle to 1,000 people in urban areas in the state everyday at a price of Rs 5 a plate. State BJP government is toying with the idea of launching the scheme in four cities of Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior and Jabalpur in the first phase and expand it to other towns in the state in phases later. The scheme is mulled apparently keeping an eye on the 2018 Assembly elections when the Bharatiya Janata Party will bid for fourth successive term in power in the state.While Delhi government’s “Aam Admi Canteens” provide subsidized meals to poor at Rs 5 and Rs 10 a plate, “Indira Amma Bhojan” in Uttarakhand provides subsidized meal at LED license plate lights Factory Rs 20. Later, Delhi, Uttarakhand and Orissa followed suit.
