Ginobili to play
Spurs guard Manu Ginobili is expected to play against the Suns, despite taking a nasty blow to the face from Kobe Bryant on Sunday.
Ginobili was struck by Byrant’s right arm after blocking Kobe’s shot attempt in the dying seconds of the fourth quarter. Ginobili was hit hard in the nose and lay on the court momentarily afterward. Bryant was suspended one game for the incident.
On Monday Ginobili’s face was still swollen and he had some bruising under his eye, but it likely won’t keep him off the court on Thursday.
“(Ginobili) tries to make a difference in the game, with the same abandon and courage that he always does,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told the San Antonio Express-News regarding Ginobili’s play against the Lakers.
Barry now a starter
Despite Ginobili’s efforts on Sunday, Popovich is not planning on moving the guard back into the starting lineup.
Ginobili was replaced by Brent Barry as a starter on Sunday, a move Popovich said was made in an attempt to strengthen the Spurs’ bench.
For much of this season Barry was the team’s best reserve, averaging 8.4 points a game in just over 20 minutes of playing time a night. Barry has also completed 46.5 percent of his 3-point attempts this year
“I`m trying to roll with the punches and trying to just go out and play like I`ve played,” Barry told the San Antonio Express-News regarding his new role.
The Spurs won their first game (straight up) with Barry starting in place of Ginobili, but failed to cover the spread as 3-point favorites against the Lakers. Barry went 0-for-4 from the floor and finished with just one point.
Duncan’s influence
Tim Duncan didn’t score the game-winning basket against the Lakers on Sunday, but he played a big role in Michael Finley’s 3-pointer that gave San Antonio a 96-94 win.
With San Antonio trailing 94-93 in the dying seconds of overtime they inbounded the ball to Duncan. The All-Star forward instantly attracted a double-team of Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom, which left Finley all alone and open for a pass from Duncan.
Finley then made a game-winning 3-pointer with just 1.3 seconds left on the clock.
“What are you going to do?” Odom told the Los Angeles Daily News about leaving Finley open. “It`s Tim Duncan with the basketball.”
Last time
The Spurs are one of the few teams that have actually beaten the Suns straight up this season, having topped Phoenix 111-106 at home on Nov. 8. However, the Suns did cover the spread in this matchup, taking the ATS win as 5 ˝-point underdogs.
Raja Bell and Steve Nash paced the Suns` offensive game that night, scoring 20 points each, while Tony Parker and Duncan led the Spurs offense with 29 and 26 points respectively.
Streak snapped
Phoenix’s 17-game winning streak finally came to an end Monday when they lost 121-112 as 5-point road favorites to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Suns led 95-94 heading into the fourth quarter, but scored only 17 points in the final 12 minutes to surrender the loss. Considering it was their fifth road game in seven days, it’s possible fatigue played a role in the streak ending.
“It was cool while it lasted,” Bell told reporters after the loss.
One thing the Suns insist they feel good about is the fact they played hard in the loss to Minnesota and didn’t simply give one away.
“In some ways, it`s better to lose that way than to lose on a night where we just beat ourselves and didn`t come to play,” Nash told reporters.
Player of the week
Nash was honored by the NBA on Monday when he was named the Western Conference Player of the Week.
It’s the second week in a row that Nash has won the award, marking the first time a Suns player has won the prize in consecutive weeks. The reigning league MVP averaged 22.5 points and 14.8 assists per game last week.
Can Suns rebound?
If bettors are wondering how the end of a winning streak will affect the Suns, they should look no further than the last time Phoenix had a hot streak come to a close.
Earlier this season the Suns won 15 in a row (straight up) before losing to the Washington Wizards on Dec. 22. Phoenix rebounded well after that loss, as they thumped Portland in their very next game, winning 110-87 as 13-point home favorites.
