Nirvana je bio svjetski poznat i popularan američki glazbeni band, začetnik grunge smjera u glazbi.
Sa svojim singlom 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' sa albuma 'Nevermind' (1991.), 'Nirvana' je postala svjetski poznat band, a osnovana je 1987. godine u Seattleu.
Druge grunge grupe iz Seattlea kao što su Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam i Soundgarden su isto tako stekle veliku slušanost, tako da je u vrijeme 1990-tih godina rock ponovno postao jedan od dominantnih smjerova po popularnosti u modernoj glazbi.
Frontman grupe 'Nirvana', Kurt Cobain je bio karizmatična ličnost te svojevrstan 'glasnogovornik generacije'. Cobain je bio osnovna pokretačka snaga, ali i uzrok raspada 'Nirvane'. Nedugo nakon posljednjeg koncerta održanog u Rimu 1994. godine, Cobain je izvršio samoubojstvo ustrijelivši se puškom u glavu.
'Nirvana' je svojevrsni fenomen u glazbi, specifičan po tome što je postao izuzetno popularan u godinama koje dolaze po orginalnim, ali i po novoizdanim radovima do osam i više godina nakon smrti samog Cobaina i raspada banda. Naime, 'Nirvana' i Kurt Cobain su u relativno kratkom periodu glazbene aktivnosti bili izuzetno produktivni i snimili velik broj radova od koji neki nisu ušli u završne verzije albuma iz tih godina, već su se našli na kasnijim izdanjima i reizdanjima.
