Fred Hersch, a jazz pianist and composer, and Scott Whitney Morgan, a technology consultant, are to celebrate their partnership today at the Kitchen Club, a restaurant in New York. Charles E. Hamlen, a friend of theirs, will lead the commitment ceremony.
Mr. Hersch (above, left) is 48. He performs regularly in New York. His most recent recording is "The Fred Hersch Trio + Two" (Palmetto), and he recorded four benefit compact discs, including "2 Hands, 10 Voices" in 2003, to raise money for Classical Action: Performing Arts Against AIDS, a program of Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS.
Last year Mr. Hersch was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship in music composition. He graduated with honors from the New England Conservatory of Music.
Mr. Morgan, 41, is a senior manager for consulting services at NPower New York, an organization that helps nonprofit groups use technology. He graduated from Florida State University. He is a director of the North American fund-raising chapter of the Field Band Foundation, an organization in Johannesburg, South Africa, that uses music to help children there learn about self-discipline, community building, H.I.V. prevention and equality of the sexes.

Robb Pearlman and David Paul Rosen celebrated their partnership yesterday at the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture. Erica Keating, a friend of theirs, led the commitment ceremony.
Mr. Pearlman (above, left) is 32. He is the associate director of licensing and brand management for Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing in New York, licensing television, film and other rights. He is also responsible for Raggedy Ann and Nancy Drew merchandise. He wrote a children's book, "Leaf Dance" (Little Simon, 2001). Mr. Pearlman graduated from the State University of New York at Albany and received a master's degree in publishing from Pace.
Mr. Rosen, 45, is a vice president of Bookspan in New York, which markets books through book clubs owned by Bertelsmann and Time Warner. He is also the editor in chief of InsightOutBooks, a book club of which he is a founder, predominantly for gay and lesbian readers. He graduated summa cum laude from Elmira College and received a master's degree in English literature from Temple.
Mr. Pearlman and Mr. Rosen met in July 2001 at a business lunch in New York, during which Mr. Pearlman was proposing Harvey Fierstein's children's book, "The Sissy Duckling," for inclusion in Mr. Rosen's book club.
"I was nervous because he is a very important editor, and it was the first time I'd met him," Mr. Pearlman recalled.
After the lunch, they exchanged e-mail messages daily for a month, negotiating the book contract. Their messages were friendly but professional, they recalled, and they did not meet again during that time.
When they had finished their business, Mr. Rosen invited Mr. Pearlman to dinner.
"At first I thought it was a business dinner," Mr. Pearlman said. "Then I realized that very few business dinners happen on a Friday night."
