HARMONIC 33

It comes as no surprise to learn that former Jedi Knight, Mark Pritchard, once harboured culinary ambitions. In his Harmonic 33 guise he is a musical masterchef, whipping up a mellifluous blend of ambient electronica, live instrumentals, sweetened with a dash of Detroit soul. This charming collection of 16 little soundtracks, produced in partnership with his buddy Dave Brinkworth, transports you to a well-stocked library of vintage-sounding muzik. Echoes of jazz icon Lalo Schifrin, soundtracker extraordinaire John Barry, and Aphex Twin whirl past your ears in a perfectly pleasant symphony of aural weirdness.
Funky downtempo instrumental hip hop this album is truly an ear and eye opener. A pot pouri of true soundtrack vibrations flow through this 40 min album… taking in swish french chic as per the nineties adventures of Dimitri From Paris (downtempo mode) and Kid Loco, gothic horror moodscapes and brushes with the genius of Raymond Scott's electronic works. The true surprise are the melodies that seductively and painfully ooze from these tracks without resorting to cliche despite the library music mentality. There are tracks on display here that would happily grace the movies of Kieslowski, Tarkovsky, Kurosawa and Herzog showing that Harmonic 33 could cosily inhabit the same worlds as Alberto Iglesias, Jon Brion and latterly Toru Takemitsu, Roy Budd, Bernard Herrmann and Ennio Morricone as masters of their art. Almost worth it alone for the closing track 'Pianet 54' that would slide so effectively into Tarkovsky classic 'Solaris' that it's hard to listen to without feeling the true pain of loss. Simply magnificent.
