Nouns form an all-star group of words, and they always have an athlete ready to take on the challenge regardless of the task. Common nouns, proper nouns abstract nouns and concrete nouns are our go-to nouns, however there are many types of nouns that are ready to play. What is an English noun?


A noun is a term that refers to a person, location or object. Although the term "things" is a bit vague, it is actually referring to objects that are inanimate, abstract concepts, or activities. Phrases and other components of speech also act like nouns and be the subject in an expression, for example, Jogging is a pleasurable activity. The the subject of this sentence is the verb Jogging, which is a noun.

Common nouns


Common nouns are terms that refer to generic or unclear people, places or things.


Proper-nouns


Proper Nouns can be used to identify a person, place or object. These words should be capitalized. The names and titles of items are always correct nouns.



Singular-nouns


Single nouns are used to describe one individual, location, or thing. For example, a cat is one animal and a banana one fruit.


Plural nouns


Plural nouns can refer to multiple things. In order to make singular nouns plural, you just have to add an S at the end. Some nouns already have an S it is possible to add a -e to the end of their names to create plural form (e.g., classes and buses). Certain singular nouns can may also alter spelling when they are they are made plural (e.g. Babies and countries).


Concrete nouns


Concrete nouns are things that can be perceived using the five senses. If you are able to see, hear, touch or taste something, you can use the term concrete.


Abstract-nouns


Abstract nouns refers to intangible concepts that aren't visible through the five senses. They are social concepts, political theories and character traits. The abstract noun anger refers to an emotion, and the abstract noun courage is a characteristic which a person possesses.


Collective-nouns


A collective noun could be a noun that acts as a single noun but is a reference to a group of people, things or other objects. A collective noun is the group of people that function as a unit, or does the same thing simultaneously. For example, the group is in the gymnasium.


Nouns that are compound


A compound noun is a term that combines two or more words to form one. Compound nouns can be used as words in a single phrase, or multiple words used separately or words joined through hyphens.


There are many nouns


A countable noun, also referred to as a count, is one you can count. If you have ten pennies or three books, then you're talking about a countable word.


Uncountable nouns


Uncountable nouns (also known as mass nouns) are those that cannot be counted. Happiness, for example, isn't countable. It's not possible to say that you've got "a happiness" or "three happinesses." Uncountable nouns typically don't come in plural forms.


The majority of the English vocabulary is composed of nouns. More nouns appear every year as people come up with new concepts, media, and technology. However, the fundamental purpose of a noun does not change. It could refer to an individual, place, or object.
