Dota Auto Chess has been gaining popularity since it appeared at the beginning of the year - the Dota 2 arcade mode now boasts more than five million subscribers, and Valve is reportedly in talks with the developers about potentially spinning it off into its own game. It’s the misleadingly-named game of drafting, placing, and upgrading pieces on a chessboard. You do this along with seven other players, each of you hoping to outlast the others.
There’s very little chess involved in the game - in fact, you don’t have to know anything about chess to play. Hell, you don’t even have to know anything about Dota. It’s a game about handling probability, managing your economy, and keeping an eye on your opponents, because you’re all pulling pieces from the same pool. There’s a lot going on in this mode, and it can be a bit disorienting when you first fire it up. But since its launch on January 4th, it’s quickly become one of the most popular modes in Dota 2’s Arcade. Unfortunately, there’s not much in the way of documentation out there for it yet, and we felt we could help fill the gap. So here’s everything you need to know to start playing Dota Auto Chess.
Choosing synergies is tricky, dependent on others’ team compositions, and can be a trap if you’re not wholly committed or if you overspecialize. Three or more warriors are always good, because warriors increase every warrior’s armor by a stacking amount when you’ve got three and six of them, and there are a lot of warriors from every species. Elves are a limited species specialization, on the other hand, and give each other evasion—but only the elves will benefit, so you have to tailor strategy for that. Two undead, meanwhile, is almost always worth it because they debuff every enemy’s armor. Two nagas is invaluable, boosting every hero on your team with extra magic resistance.
You will need to keep an eye out on their other top tier opponents to make sure their composition doesn’t hard counter yours. But there’s another reason you’ll need to be on the lookout: fixed hero counts. There are a limited number of copies of each hero available in a game. If your opponents are all leaning heavily on mech synergies, for instance, those heroes will be much less likely to appear in your shop. The best Auto Chess players are able to recognize what other players are building and pivot to the strongest pieces that are currently being ignored. By doing so, you’ll find you’re able to get the upgrades you need much more consistently than the majority of players.
Once combat initiates at the start of a round, your active characters will fight the AI or human opponents automatically. As you kill enemies, you'll notice little gift packages appear on the ground. Right click on these packages to pick them up, and look at the bottom right of your screen to view them sitting in your inventory. You can give these items to your heroes to buff them, and they can even be combined with other items to boost their power. Finally, to enjoy all the features in the game, players can Buy Dota Auto Chess Candy from Mmocs at a reasonable price.
