A Slot Glossary for Players
You're probably not going to encounter many of the terms from this glossary when you play online slot machines, but it's always good to have an understanding of the history of any casino game.
Action
This term refers to the total amount of money bet in a session or period of time. For example, you might say that you have $200 of action ahead of you before you start to play.
Bonus Game
This is an opportunity to win additional money from a slot machine, usually in a game format that doesn't have anything to do with spinning reels.
Buy-A-Feature and Buy-A-Pay
Both of these terms refer to slot machines that include bonus features or pay tables that only kick in when you're making the maximum bet.
Carousel
In a casino, this term refers to a cluster of four or more slot machines. Superstitious gamblers often have preferences as to the placement of the cluster they're going to play at.
Credit
This is the term used most frequently instead of "coins" in both brick and mortar and online casinos. You're awarded a credit for each coin amount you place into a machine and you're also rewarded credits back when you win. For instance, if you're playing a quarter slot and insert $1, you have four credits with which to play.
Fill
This term only applies to "live" slot machines as it refers to the bag of coins that are used to fill up an empty slot machine's hopper.
Hit Frequency
This is the frequency of a slot machine's wins and jackpots versus the number of times that it is played. Neophytes often believe that casinos set machines with a greater hit frequency near pathways through the casino floor, but this has never been proven. A machine with a high hit frequency is also known as a "hot" or "loose" machine. The opposite would be a "tight" machine.
Jackpot
This is, of course, the most popular term related to slot machines – it’s the highest payout on a machine. Some people misuse the term to mean any payout.
Max Bet
This is the maximum number of credits you can play in a spin. This depends greatly on the machine that you're playing and the number of paylines available. A traditional 3-reel mechanical slot machine will only let you bet one credit at a time. A 30-payline machine will let you play up to 30 credits.
Payline
This is the line by which a winning combination is determined. This varies from machine to machine with some offering up to 50 different ways for players to win on a spin. On some video slot machines, there is a "scatter pay" payline, in which certain symbols don't have to be connected in any fashion in order to count as a win, as long as they appear.
Reels
Reels are the rotating narrow barrels on which the slot machine's symbols appear. These are more and more simulated than real now thanks to the prevalence of video slots.
Take/Pay Cycle
This is a term applied by people playing a certain sort of strategy based on the payout percentage of a given machine. For instance, if it pays out 10% of the time, then it'd have a 9/1 take/pay cycle.
Volatility
This refers to the ratio of the size of payouts versus the frequency of jackpots in a slot machine. This, along with the "take/pay cycle" and "hit frequency" is the cornerstone of many slot machin
