How to Start a Chiropractic Business in North Carolina


A Chiropractor, also known as a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC), is a medical practitioner that focuses on musculoskeletal and nervous system disorders, and how these disorders affect general health. This could include neck or back pain, such as from an injury, headaches, or even joint pain. If you are interested in starting a chiropractic business in North Carolina, be advised that the educational process and requirements are quite involved.

1)Obtain licensing and certification from the Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Requirements for licensing include a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university or college, 4,200 hours of accredited education in chiropractic care, and the ability to prove good moral character.

2)Write a business plan, usually required for business financing. This is a roadmap explaining how you plan to run and grow your business for the next 3 to 5 years.

3)Decide on a business name and structure. Determine if you will be a sole proprietor, operating under your own name, a corporation, or have a professional services limited liability corporation with a business partner. Once you decide this, you will need to register the business name with the state of North Carolina (making sure no one else already has the name), and file the appropriate paperwork for your business structure. 5)Research what tax forms you will need to prepare for the business structure you have chosen, and apply for a federal tax identification number. 6)Research an office location and secure office space. Once you know where you will be working and the space in which you have to work, order the necessary equipment for your business. This can include office equipment, chiropractic and massage tables, electronic stimulation units, and ice and heat packs.

8)Plan your grand opening. Set a date, and send press releases to local newspapers and news stations. Advertise in local daily and weekly newspapers, and in any online community sites available in your area.

You may wish to develop an employee handbook, and have employees sign a form showing employees have read and understand office requirements. This may protect you in a lawsuit from a disgruntled employee.

Make sure you understand when state, local and federal taxes need to be filed. Some taxes, such as sales tax, are required to be filed monthly. Some, such as school district taxes, are required to be filed quarterly. Penalties may apply if they are not filed on time.
