My Work on the Isiolo Small Irrigation Schemes
I managed the small irrigation schemes in Isiolo between the year 1984 and 1985. These schemes were the Malkadaka Irrigation Scheme (40 Ha), Garfassa Irrigation Scheme(200 Ha), the Merti Irrigation Scheme(10 Ha) and the Kina Irrigation Scheme (2 ha).
In total these schemes served 1,000 farmers. We ran one water diesel pump at Malkadaka and build the main irrigation canal at Garfassa during this period,See the works-in-progress in the picture above.
I also supervised the Kina and Merti Irrigaion Schemes.
We had the best harvest the Malkadaka farmers had never seen in 5 years.
One thing I will always remember during this period was the swelling of the Uaso Nyiro river that washed away two of our irrigation pumps when the maize was beginning to tassel.
With the help of the ministry of agriculture headquarters in Nairobi I obtained a tank full of diesel and operated the remaining one pump 24/7 to ensure the crop did not dry in the field.
