(Hydraulic radius) The cross-sectional area of a stream divided by the wetted perimeter.
(Hydraulic radius) The Manning formula, known also as the Gauckler–Manning formula, or Gauckler–Manning–Strickler formula in Europe, is an empirical formula for open channel flow, or free-surface flow driven by gravity.
Piston pumps, as used in hydraulic systems, create a flow by pistons moving in and out of cylinder bores as the latter pass over inlet and outlet ports.
A type of hydraulic pump that uses cam lobe action against pistons to generate hydraulic fluid flow for the lifting of implements. Though superior in their characteristics and longer lasting, excessive numbers of parts (meaning expense) limited their use to only a couple of manufacturers.

Milton: The picture you’re seeing it’s the hydraulic temper marked the future of track maintenance when it was introduced in the 1940s. The machine is used to lift the track into line and pack the ballast around the ties. This is a process known as tamping. Tampers are an essential piece of track maintenance equipment. The Toronto Hamilton & Buffalo 2204-16 was built by Canron in 1970, and was retired in 1989 and donated by CPR to the Museum in 1990.

Once the new stays have all been fitted the boiler will be subjected to a hydraulic test. Prior to the test various parts of the boiler have to be "blanked off" to prevent the water escaping. The dome cover has been lifted and the regulator valve removed and blanked off. The dome cover, which normally houses the safety valves is replaced by a large blank.
