Southern Confederacy Memorial
This memorial was dedicated to the succession of the Southern Confederacy which happened on December 20, 1860. This was after Texas had previously been ruled by Mexico in the 1820s, followed by political unrest and war between America and Mexico that started in 1836 with the Texas Revolution which finally ended in 1846 with the defeat of Santa Anna in the Mexican-American War after the US annexed Texas in 1845. By 1850 Texas had its current boundaries established.
Ten years later the Civil War broke out where it seems that Texas supported South Carolina's succession from the union. Standing the tallest on the monument was the Confederate's President, Jefferson Davis. I don't know if the four people surrounding him are people of South Carolina or Texas.
Southern Dogface
Southern Dogface, Zerene cesonia . It's nectaring on Butterfly Weed, Asclepias tuberosa, a type of milkweed. I had the ID wrong on this, originally calling it an Orange Sulphur. Thanks to NVBOB2 for correctly identifying it for me. I've made the necessary corrections.
