Woodlands Shaw Cineplex
Situated within walking distance from the Woodlands Checkpoint, the Woodlands Cinema was opened in the 1970s by Shaw Organisation in the heart of the Old Woodlands Town Centre. At that time, Shaw was the largest distributor of motion picture films produced globally, sporting flicks from countries such as India, Taiwan, Vietnam and USA.
In the 1980s, as the number of movie-goers started to decline due to rampant piracy and recession, Shaw started to redefine its cinema experience. Besides the upgrade of equipment to offer a 'high-quality' experience, deals were also made with fast food chains to provide snacks for patrons.
The idea of a cineplex was also born - showing a blockbuster in the main hall, while a less popular flick is screened in a smaller hall. Woodlands Cinema was converted into a two-plex in 1989, with two cinema halls.
Today, the cineplex has closed down, and is left vacant.
