Another experiment. Sorta. I've never bothered much with RAW files. My camera came with software for processing them, but for a humble dabbler who merely views his photos on screen and posts some of them to Flickr as greatly downsized jpegs, there didn't seem much point. But yesterday I finally worked out how to download and install the plug-in that adds the Olympus E-520 to the repertoire of cameras whose RAW files can be processed in Photoshop Elements 6. So we popped out for a drive and I shot off about 25 RAW files, of which this was one, here converted to jpeg of course. It was taken with the smallest ring of a set of extension tubes attached to a Sigma 28-70mm lens zoomed all the way down to 28mm.
I think this must be Tortula muralis, a common moss of walls. The brown spore capsules are dead, from last season. The younger ones are still sheathed in the yellowish-green calyptra. The cushion of moss seems to create a little exclusion zone around itself. Outside the sterile ring of bare brick (actually it's the churchyard wall of St Petronilla ...a rare dedication, notes Pevsner... at Whepstead, Suffolk), is a greyish dusting of lichen. Another species forms a yellow stain in the background.
I remember watching the blurry television pictures beamed back to Earth from the first lunar landing in ...what was it ...July 1969? When Armstrong and Aldrin returned, the Sunday colour supplements were full of photographs taken on the Moon during the expedition. The astronauts gambolled around, doing their "moonwalk" and made a few knockabout quips. They had stepped out of their steel capsule onto a terrain of dust and naked rock and into a harsh, austere light unmodified by any atmosphere. They brought back samples of soil and rock wherein no residuals of life have ever been discovered. They would have been dead in a second had they not been wearing sealed suits of the Earth's atmosphere. The most striking photograph showed something never before seen by human eyes ...an Earthrise. Glittering with colour, the home of the human species rose above the lunar horizon, its every square inch teeming with living things.

My lens arrived home today after being repaired, so I decided to take some photographs of the two Cameras side by side.
Set up: Two Photon Studio Lights, Large Softbox with black sheet inside, Olympus Point and Shoot on tripod. (My room got very very hot...)
I am also trying out different editing software at the moment. I downloaded the trials of Lightroom 3 and Aperture 3 today. At this moment in time I'm enjoying Lightroom more than Aperture....
