Clean Brass Tarnish
- Lose or cause to lose luster, esp. as a result of exposure to air or moisture

- Tarnish is a thin layer that forms over copper, brass, silver, aluminum, and other semi-reactive metals as their outermost layer undergoes a chemical reaction. Tarnish is mainly caused by chemicals in the air, such as sulfur dioxide.

Duties of a Monk
On visiting the Dzong at Thimpu; I was greeted by the sight of a group of Monks busily cleaning the hundreds of Buddha statues from the temple.
Using rags and Brasso they sat in the sun joking whilst lines of tarnished artefacts at one end of the line became gleaming brass ornaments at the other.
The production line was well thought out, with many of the younger monks having the tougher job of buffing the dried Brasso off the statues. Must be one of the perks as you move through time in the monastery that you get lighter duties, such as applying - rather than removing the Brasso.
The Buddhas still to be cleaned, or those having Brasso applied - had their faces covered. On asking was this for some religious reason, the Monk laughed and pointed out that the faces were painted gold and the Brasso would take this off. No English was used but the message was put across using his hands and his own face.

Tarnished bell
A few weeks ago we bought this brass bell at a garage sale. (I have it disassembled here to work on cleaning it up.) It was marked for $10 but we bought it with a pile of other things including some records which we got for $10 less than they were asking si it was kind of free.
Why would we want a bell like this? Well, in many bars there is a bell hung up. In Alaska, if you ring the bell you are buying a round for everyone in the place. My point? We bought a bar at a garage sale earlier. I'll cover that later!
I started to clean up the bell using a brass polish recipe I found online. Salt, powdered laundry detergent, lemon juice, warm water... It did a good job smothing the bell but it didn't remove the tarnishing. Today I started using sand paper to bring the bell back to life. It works better but my hands are cramping.
Writing blog posts from my cell phone isn't really helping my hands relax though.
