    dome camera
  • A common indoor security camera, dome cameras are mounted on the ceiling.  Their two main advantages are a more appealing visual appearance and being easily movable.  Their drawback is a lack of usefulness during low light situations (therefore not effective when the lights are off).

  • A type of camera with a dome-like shape. Most often used indoors. Some feature infrared lightning and some are designed to be tamper-proof, such as the Armor Dome Camera.

    underwater
  • submerged: beneath the surface of the water; "submerged rocks"

  • Underwater is a term describing the realm below the surface of water where the water exists in a natural feature (called a body of water) such as an ocean, sea, lake, pond, or river. Three quarters of the planet Earth is covered by water.

  • Situated, occurring, or done beneath the surface of the water

  • subaqueous: growing or remaining under water; "viewing subaqueous fauna from a glass-bottomed boat"; "submerged leaves"

The Dolphin Dome at the Indianapolis Zoo is just plain awesome. Zoo visitors walk into a glass dome in the middle of the dolphin habitat (the big pool where the dolphin shows are held, actually) and watch the dolphins swim all around. Everyone has seen a dolphin show above the water -- but how often do you get to see what happens beneath the surface?

You can even hear them. The sound carries so well, so you can hear their clicks and chirps as they use their sonar and talk to each other. Maybe the most amazing part is when you realize that the dolphins are watching us -- turning the Dolphin Dome into the one place in the Zoo where the humans are on exhibit for the animal viewers! ^_^

The Dolphin Dome is blue and tranquil, and it's the single most frustrating place at the Zoo for me to try to take a decent photo. Dolphins are sleek, fast, and powerful -- which translates to uber-blurry when I aim a camera at them. This trip was no exception. I have blurry tails, elongated silver streaks that are vaguely dolphin-shaped, reflections of awestruck humans with some amorphous blob in the water behind the glare... And I have this shot. It's not a good photo, I know that. But I think it's a cool photo. I like the light, it's almost in focus in spots, and there's a whole dolphin in frame (except maybe the very tip of a nose). It's blue and trippy -- and it sort of captures my sense of wonder being so close to playful, magical, curious dolphins!

It's my favorite bad photo ever (and I have taken so many bad pictures!), but it's also a close runner-up for my Project 52 because I just love it. View it on black -- maybe you'll see what I see!
