Vehicle Assembly Building

This image shows the cradle which supports the orbiter as it is raised from horizontal to a vertical position and inserted next to the SRBs and external fuel tank (which have already been assembled in the VAB). There are two lugs either side of the orbiter fuselage, near the nose-end into which the cradle fits. The ultimate convenience would be a space plane which takes off on a runway and returns to one. The shuttle got halfway there.

The Vehicle Assembly Building was once the largest free-standing structure in the world and, in the humid Florida climate, small clouds sometimes condense near the ceiling inside. Large modern buildings, such as shopping malls, make the scale seem less impressive today but it IS a large building, with over 50 floors (I noticed one elevator had buttons up to 51). Apparently there are numerous "portakabins" on the upper floors, some of which have not be opened since the Apollo programme, for which this building was assembled. Had NASA proceeded with its manned space programme, the VAB would once again be used to capacity with the assembly of the taller Aries rockets.

This image was taken on an April 2001 educational trip for school pupils from Wales and Cornwall. Access beyond the tourist route was relatively straightforward before the 9/11 incident. Unfortunately, the sodium vapour lamp illumination inside the building, while energy-efficient, made the colour-balance of the images hard to correct.
