I started making my own dishwasher detergent and using it without telling my DH to see if he had anything to say about it. In the 6 months I've been using it, he's not complained once. I ran out and had to use store bought in a pinch. He instantly complained about all the water spots and grime left on the dishes. So I made up a new batch before I would be forced to use the store bought stuff again.
Homemade dishwasher detergent
3/4 c Borax
3/4 c washing soda
3 tbsp citric acid
So far, I'm not too crazy about it. There's a slight greasy film on everything, even with a rinse agent. More research is needed!
