- Miele (pronounced 'MEE-luh - rhymes with Sheila) is a manufacturer of high-end domestic appliances, commercial equipment and fitted kitchens, based in Gütersloh, Germany. Miele has always been a family-owned and run company, founded in 1899 by Carl Miele and Reinhard Zinkann.

La parola miele sembra derivare dall'ittita melit. Per millenni ha rappresentato l'unico alimento zuccherino concentrato disponibile. Le prime tracce di arnie costruite dall'uomo risalgono al sesto millennio AC circa.
Anche nell'antico Egitto il miele era apprezzato, e le prime notizie di apicoltori che si spostavano lungo il Nilo per seguire con le proprie arnie la fioritura delle piante risalgono a 4000 anni fa. Durante gli scavi delle tombe dei faraoni sono stati rinvenuti vasi di miele ermeticamente chiusi il cui contenuto si era perfettamente conservato. Lo usavano anche per curare i disturbi digestivi e per creare unguenti per piaghe e ferite.
I sumeri lo impiegavano in creme con argilla, acqua e olio di cedro, mentre i babilonesi lo impiegavano per cucinare: erano diffuse infatti le focaccine fatte con farina, sesamo, datteri e miele. Nel Codice di Hammurabi si ritrovano articoli con cui gli apicoltori erano tutelati dal furto di miele dalle arnie.
La medicina ayurvedica, già tremila anni fa, considerava il miele purificante, afrodisiaco, dissetante, vermifugo, antitossico, regolatore, refrigerante, stomachico e cicatrizzante. Per ogni specifico caso era indicato un differnete tipo di miele: di ortaggi, di frutti, di cereali o di fiori.
I Greci lo consideravano "cibo degli dei", e dunque rappresentava una componente importantissima nei riti che prevedevano offerte votive. Omero descrive la raccolta del miele selvatico; Pitagora lo raccomandava come alimento per una vita lunga.
I romani ne importavano grandi quantitativi da Creta, da Cipro, dalla Spagna e da Malta. Quest'ultima pare anche derivarne il nome originale Meilat, appunto terra del miele. Veniva utilizzato come dolcificante, per la produzione di idromele, di birra, come conservante alimentare e per preparare salse agrodolci.
