wet
Wet. It came last night in a watered down form. The discussion on the
phone was of the large storm that rumbled through the Twin Cities
yesterday afternoon. Here, we watched the sky and the internet trying
to know what was going to happen. We speculated and studied the wind
and the light and the clouds. We wrapped the materials and played the
percentages. It was going to rain but how much?
Last night we took Laura to a bird to eat some fish. It was Friday
night. All you can eat Walleye at the pleasant Pheasant Inn. We
wrestled the last adjustments into the trusses. Clamp on... a little
more to towards the house... perfect, kachunk! kachunk! Still good
kachunk! kachunk! Clamp off.
We finished stowed and showered and walked over to her house. She was
waiting watching 24. I stood under the kitchen ceiling fan marveling
on the draft and got sucked in. I had to know what was going to
happen next. Laura reached down to the floor next to her chair and
poked the remote. The screen want black and the silence quilted the
room. Internally I gasped... what happened... oh my... oh whew! man
that was weird.
We hunted for Laura's cain and made our way out to the garage and got
in the Ponitac 6000. For me this was interesting. I used to drive a
station wagon version of the same car. There was even the little
diagram of the car so you know what is happening with things. The
light line drawing is of a sedan though. Chip drove carefully, low on
the road. Laura in the back, we watched the sky. To our right the sky
was light and bright, clouded but bright. To the left the sky was
ominous. Rich deep dark colour making the green dark and lush. We
turned toward town on 35 and anticipated when the rain would start.
As we turned around the corner of the lake coming into town the rain
hit the windshield. But not like we expected. We parked on Main
Street just where the volley ball courts start. Chip helped Laura out
and we made our way in. I opened the door holding it for them. Inside
the sounds erupted out the door greeting us. A family was walking
towards the door and the parents stood aside to let Laura and Chip
in. A small boy moved around his parents and moved to the doorway.
His mother caught hold of him and said wait. She appologised and said
"you try and teach them manners" Laura and Chip went in and I
continued to hold the door for the family. They said thank you as
they walked by. I smiled and went in.
We sat. The waitress came and we ordered ice tea and the spotted cow
in a glass, two of them.
When she came back with menus we laughed and said we knew what we
wanted to order. The fish!
Chips had been thinking and talking about the fish since the last
friday we were there. Laura had been looking forward to it as well.
Me I was going to use a fork this time and not have to scrub my
fingers with steel wool.
So began the wait. All around us there was bustle and hustle. The
three tv's above the bathroom wall payed 3 different things. On the
farthest was 24! The middle was golf. It seems that Tiger's bad day
ranks pretty high. NBC rounded out the sets. In the lower left corner
and side of 24 and NBC the weather moved across the twin cities. Chip
chirped in once and while with "flood warning". Laura could not see
the tv's her back was to them. She did turn at one point when the
conversation turned to the knitted poster on the wall. It was the
listing of a bar association. It listed about 40 names of counties in
Wisconsin, in the center there was a coat of arms of sorts. It was
hung under some packer lite beer decorations.
At one point the basket ball game took over the sound in the room. We
decided it should have its own sound proof room.
We positioned our empty beer glasses on the edge of the table and the
waitress appeared. More beer and some water. And so went the wait.
TIgers ball bouncing through the crowd. Someone climbing though a cut
fence and the weather moving through MInnesota.
The windshields of the cars out the tinted window of the bar remained
dry. The tint in the window exaggerating the foreboding weather.
We chatted and speculated about how they must be catching the fish.
Maybe they ran out of fish line. We laughed and moved through this
and that.
We caught the waitress at a beer change. She said soon and apologized
then went away. Chip's head would go to the table each time she would
come out of the kitchen with out anything.
Then it lit up and he pushed his water glass and beer back from in
front of him.
Ah... it was here. The greatest Walleye. On platter plates with fries
JO-Jo or french, and some bread stick planted there to fill you up so
you would not eat so much fish, some tartar and some cold slaw.
She put them down on the table and said " not to make excuses but we
are short a cook and have no dishwasher" Oh man alright, all is
forgiven the fish is here. Forks come out of the miller lite 6 pack
holder. Ketchup and salt. I look up and half the fish is on the
plates are gone. Sm
242/365 - The greatest invention in the world
Monday I cleaned up the house, it wasn't a complete disaster but definitely needed some tidying up. So I gave the place the once over and decided that the dishwasher would be a cool pic. I know there have been some wondrous inventions throughout the history of mankind, but the dishwasher has got to rank way up there on the charts. There have been a few times that I've lived in houses/flats that didn't have a dishwasher and man, it makes life a lot tougher to say the least.
